Introduction
Time: 3-5 minutes

If you ever watch the local news in America, or abroad, most

likely you will hear about different crimes committed in the area. Ask
the students if they have ever had something stolen from them. Have
they ever witnessed a crime? Did you report the crime? Why or why
not? Talk about seeing theft in Bangkok. Tell the class you are going to
be talking about crimes.

Lead In
Time: 10 minutes

Split the class into small groups. Give each group the handout
and have them discuss the questions with their groups. Once finished, have
the students volunteer to say something that surprised them about one of
their classmates cities. Ask each group what they said about Is it ever ok to
break the law?, and if so under what circumstances?

Activity 1

Time: 5-10 minutes

Brainstorm
different crimes and write them on the right-hand side of the board. Then
dictate some of the crimes the class didnt come up with and try to elicit
definitions from them. Then, while in their groups, have the students flip over
the handout and have them look at the list of penalties for breaking crimes.
Have the students read out each punishment one at a time and answer any
questions about them.

Activity 2

Time: 15-20 minutes

Game: Each group will now be judges. Pass out different court
cases to each of the students, and, one at a time, have them come to the
front of the class and read out their crime and reason for committing that
crime. Each group will then discuss each case and decide from the list of
punishments in Activity 1 which punishment is best suited to that crime and
why. Then ask for a representative from each group to state the groups
decision and why they came to that conclusion. If a majority decision is not
reached, have the groups debate on a punishment until a majority have
decided on the punishment.

Activity 3

Time: 5-10 minutes

Have the students discuss as a class which crime they think is

the LEAST serious. What do they think are the three MOST serious? Why do
they think these things?

Wrap Up

Time: 5 minutes

Thank the class for coming and tell them lesson plans for Friday
if decided upon.
