SimulCam is an innovative technology that provides simultaneous viewing

of several competitors overlaid onto a single video sequence. Developed by
Dartfish SA, it is patented in the USA, in Europe, and in several Asian countries.
SimulCam has been used in some of the greatest sporting events in the world Autonomous mobile communication systems
the Olympic Games, the World Skiing Championship, and the World Athletics
Championship.
The EPFL Audiovisual Communications Laboratory initially developed the techno-
logy in 1996. The SimulCam system recomposes the video images in two steps.
It first accounts for the various positions of the camera as it records different
competitors, then extracts the movement of these competitors from the back-
ground and reconstructs a high quality image. The SimulCam team used their
new method for the first time to record the downhill race at the Lauberhorn
World Cup in 1998. At that time, the method required a time-consuming EPFL researchers began to examine the idea of

their mobility, their many functions (transmission
of voice, data, still or moving images, etc.), and the
absence of any infrastructure requires that they be
able to identify their environment autonomously,

neighbouring devices.

internship with a leading firm in your field? Or perhaps you will
complete your diploma work in a research lab or business that
works in partnership with one of our faculty? To offer you a wide
range of choice, we maintain a large internship database and even

field of communications. What seemed completely futuristic yesterday

and found a great diversity in the exchanges.
I also much appreciated spending a year at Eurecom.
As an engagement manager with McKinsey, I work with
business managers and give them technical advice. For
example, I helped a CIO to reorganize his IT unit as an
effective service provider. I also helped select a provider
for setting up SAP and helped decide what operational
and information functions should be outsourced. I lead
a team of two or three consultants for projects that last
three months on average.

A teaching system that is more flexible than the French system
and allowed me to choose some fields of specific interest led me
to choose EPFL. I am interested in the mathematics of communi-
cations systems. I was able to do my diploma work at the Sprint
Advanced Technology Lab in California.
My doctoral work is in the Laboratory for computer Communica-
tions and Applications (LCA). My research area is the development
of self-organized ad-hoc networks. The goal is to have different
entities communicate between themselves efficiently without any
central coordination. I am also an assistant for the course Stochastic
Processes and I take courses myself in the doctoral program.

Alexandre Aellig, student

(Communication Systems, EPFL)
As the ETHZ does not have a program in communication
systems, I naturally chose EPFL.The fact that the school
has a strong international reputation was just as important.
The professional perspectives seemed to me extremely
varied, and my studies confirmed this. And the students
themselves come from everywhere on the horizon.

> The global internet is a massive, dynamic, and highly distributed network.
It has become an essential tool in our daily lives to communicate and
to access information. The Internet operates without any central authority
and control, and network domains are only loosely coupled.
Therefore, understanding the behaviour and evolution of the global Internet
is almost like observing a living organism : for example, the image above
shows a snapshot of the Internets nodes and links at a particular moment
in time. Scientists use such images to visualize and study the structure
of the network and its growth over time.
