Announcing for Spring 2017:

MUSIC 575: SEMINAR IN THEORY

will be devoted on this occasion to

The Music of

GYRGY LIGETI
One of the true giants of late 20th/early 21st century Western
music, Ligeti has been the focus of an ever-growing body of
theoretical and analytical research during the past several
decades. This course will cover the various approaches taken to
this remarkable repertoire, beginning with his Hungarian
period and continuing with the music he produced after
emigrating to Germany in 1956: sound-mass composition,
micropolyphony, and (in the later works) the incorporation of
influences derived from the player-piano music of Conlon
Nancarrow and the rhythmic practices of Central Africa. Expect
lots of listening, a fair amount of reading and, of course,
analysis.
No specific background required, but some familiarity with the
methodology of post-tonal analysis (such as Music 471 or 472)
would be useful.
Tuesdays, 1:30-3:20 p.m., Room 212. For further details,
contact: Professor Jonathan Bernard <jbernard@uw.edu>
