I. Energy Levels
A. Depending on the amount of energy, electrons travel at different distances from the
nucleus.
B. These distances are referred to as energy levels.
C. The energy levels are named using numbers 1 through 7.
D. The ______________________________ on the periodic table refers to how many
energy levels an atom contains.
E. Write the maximum number of electrons that can fit into energy levels 1-3.

i. Level 1 = ___________________ electrons

ii. Level 2 = ___________________ electrons
iii. Level 3 = ___________________ electrons
F. A complete and stable outer energy level will contain 8 electrons.
G. Notice how the row ends with an outer energy level filled. This means that in GROUP
18, all the elements have the 2nd energy level filled completely.
i. Group 18 is the most stable elements on the Periodic table. They are called, Noble
Gases for this reason.

II. Bohr Models

A. Bohr Models show the possible locations of electrons in the electron cloud.
B. Draw a Bohr Model for the following elements: He, B, Na, Cl

I. Valence Electrons
A. Elements that are in the same group have the same number of electrons in their
OUTER energy levels.
i. The OUTER energy level electrons determine the chemical properties of the element.
ii. The electrons in the outer energy level are called the

___________________________.

iii. The number above each group/column on the Periodic Table (next to the letter A)
provides the valence electron number.

II. Electron Dot Diagrams

A. The valence electrons are so important in determining the chemical properties of an
element that a special way to represent them has been developed.
B. An electron dot diagram uses the symbol of the element and dots to represent the
valence electrons.
i. Write the Symbol. Then, clockwise and using the directional points, draw dots around
the symbol.
ii. In the space below, draw the electron dot diagrams for all the elements in GROUP 13
& GROUP 16.
