BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS: SPREADSHEETS, WORD TEMPLATE, NARRATED POWERPOINT

Name: Lexie Fuhrman

Grade Level: 6th
Content Area: Mathematics
Basic Productivity Tool Used: Microsoft Excel
Standards Addressed:
MGSE6.SP.1 Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to
the question and accounts for it in the answers. MGSE6.SP.2 Understand that a set of data collected
to answer a statistical question has a distribution which can be described by its center, spread, and
overall shape. MGSE6.SP.3 Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes
all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation describes how its values vary
with a single number.
Blooms Level of Critical Thinking:

Description of how to implement in the class: The teacher will begin the lesson by reviewing
mean, median, and mode. Together, the class will create a survey that asks the question what is
your favorite color out of the following choices? The students will list a few color choices. The
teacher will type the question in the first cell of the Excel spreadsheet. Then in columns B1 through
E1, the teacher will list the students color choices. Then the teacher will conduct the survey by
asking students to raise their hand for their favorite color choice. Each amount will be recorded in
B2 through E2 of the corresponding color choice.

Once the class has finished answering the survey, the teacher will type the word MEAN into cell G1,
MEDIAN into cell H1, and MODE into cell I1. The teacher will use Excel to place the correct
number under each of the mean, median, and mode columns. This will demonstrate how to use Excel
to find functions for mean, median, and mode. After the answers have been calculated, the teacher
will show students how to create a graph for their findings.

Once the teacher has finished modeling the activity, students will split into pairs and create their
own question and answer survey. The students will go around to various classrooms and survey the
students and teachers until they have surveyed 20 people. Once theyve reached 20 people, they will
plot their information in an Excel spreadsheet and create a visual graph to show their data. Each pair
will present their findings to the class and then post their completed graphs around the school for
others to see.

Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): The students are using technology at a LoTi 4. They
are creating their own questions and using their knowledge of Excel to show their results in a graph
as well as a list. They will share this information with the school.
Description of the sample spreadsheet and graph/chart provided: In the Excel spreadsheet you
will see a column with the question, answer choices, mean, median, and mode.
Under the columns for answer choices, the number of students who chose that color will be listed.
The functions for mean, median, and mode will be applied to these numbers under the appropriate
columns for mean, median, and mode.

Beneath all of this information, a 3D bar graph will be displayed with a Title, an X-axis title, and a Y-
axis title along with a key to the chart.
