Content Area: Grade Level:

Math CCM8 8
Subject Matter:
7.1: Finding Square Roots
Lesson Content Description:
Students will learn about square roots and perfect squares.

Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:

Lecture, vocab, whiteboards, video , calculators

Common Core Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.A.2
Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the form x2 =
p and x3 = p, where p is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect
squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that 2 is irrational.

ELD Standard:
Collaborative
Expanding
1. Exchanging information/ideas
Contribute to class, group, and partner discussions by following turn-taking rules, asking
relevant questions, affirming others, adding relevant information, and paraphrasing key
ideas.
Common Core Lesson Objective:
Students will evaluate roots of small perfect squares, and use a calculator to find the square
root of decimals.

Assessment:
Formative: guided practice problems, oral questioning, circulating, homework

Summative: n/a

Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs

- Extra notes printed, vocabulary emphasis, priority seating, peer tutor

LESSON PRESENTATION

INTO

Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation

Teacher asks students what they know about exponents.
Jot down ideas
Talk about the basics and how we will be working up to scientific notation and why
exponents are important.

THROUGH

Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective

Teacher has students write down the title an objective.
7.1: Finding square roots
Teacher goes over vocabulary:

Square root: The square root of a number is a value that, when multiplied by itself,
gives the number.

Radical sign: Refers to the square root sign, can be used for cube roots, etc.

Radicand: The number inside of the radical sign

(Teacher uses square root of 7 to display vocabulary and tie into lesson)

Step-by-Step Guided/Structured Practice of the Objective: Gradual Release of

Instruction
Teacher does Ex1: Find two square roots of 49. Explains that 7 x 7 = 49, but also -7 x
-7 = 49. Introduce vocab: perfect square.
Ex2. Negative square root of 9/16. Explain that that radical applies to both the top
and the bottom.
Ex 3: Square of 2.25. Show students how to use calculators to solve.

Technology used to create and enhance Guided Practice examples: Teacher uses Khan
video/ Big ideas video as an example problem

EL: Special Needs Adaptations:

Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment of Each Students

Performance/Closure of Instruction
Students complete guided practice problems on finding two squares roots (GP1),
finding the perfect square (GP2), and evaluating square roots with fractions and
decimals (GP3).
Students can work in partners.
Students participate by raising their hand to solve, and/or writing work on the
board.
Teacher has class say the answers together.

BEYOND

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students Performance

Final Closure of Lesson: Closure question to reinforce instruction learned

Students work on homework assignment. Pg.292 #4-27

Teacher has students pack up and asks one student to restate the objective.
Teacher asks if the students have achieved the objective, and has students explain
vocab and key concepts before they leave.

Technology used to create and enhance Independent Practice: Khan academy video if not
shown previously
