STORY

Happy birthday Ali! You are looking

smart in jacket and I see you have got

a cool new cap too. Ali in his usual

style tugged his cap in appreciation and

acknowledged Yogis compliments.

Thank you Yogi replied Ali, my uncle

gifted me this new cap. He knows I

love caps and every year he is the one

who always gifts me a new cap.

Woof, woof! jumped Choco wagging

his tail trying to get Yogis attention

Oh! hello Choco. Are you ready for

the party? Yogi patted Choco. Oh,

yes! confirmed Ali, He is been

excited since afternoon!

Choco was Alis pet and one would

always find Choco around Ali. Aha! I

also see you have got a new collar,

there was nothing that could miss

Yogis eye. His friends called him

Detective Yogi.

Yes Yogi, thats my birthday gift to

Choco quipped Ali, and its as much

his birthday party as mine. Here after

both of us will celebrate 18th June as

our birthday. Yogi loved Alis idea, so

did Choco as he started jumping in

circles.

Ali was celebrating his 8th birthday and

he had invited his friends to celebrate

the day with him. This was his first

birthday in his new neighborhood and

4
with his helpful, adventurous and

participative nature it didnt take him

much time to make new friends. Ali,

Meg and Choco were his best friends.

An accidental encounter, made them

meet for the first time and Alis school

project brought them together to

create a Community Library. The

project was Books The Best

Companion and Curious Club, as they

are famously referred to now,

delivered that project by creating a

Community Library. Their enthusiasm

brought in support and encouragement

from many corners right from

Mr. Kapoor arranging for a library

room to book drive donations cheered

and supported by many. Today the

library is a big success in the

neighborhood especially with kids and

the library now even has a separate

Childrens Books section.

Wish you many happy returns of the

day, greeted Meg as she handed a

hand-made greeting card to Ali.

6
Thank you Meg and the card is very

beautiful. Meg loves to draw and paint

and her friends call her Artist. She

drew the portrait of the now famous

Library inauguration photo with the

message of birthday greetings. Wow!

Meg it looks so real remarked Yogi,

it was indeed a special day for us and

our friendship. The Curious Club

cheered and hugged each other.

Hello kids! Good to see you all, hope

you all are comfortable Alis mom

greeted all the children, Ali why dont

you introduce Ayesha to your friends.

Kids meet Ayesha, Alis cousin.

The kids welcomed and greeted Ayesha

as Ali started introducing her to all his

friends. Meg approached Ayesha and

greeted Ayesha through some hand

gestures and even Ayesha responded

to Meg through a similar hand gesture.

both warmly hugged each
And they

other.

Yogi who was keenly observing this,

asked Meg Have you met Ayesha

before?. Yes Yogi, I have met

Ayesha before. She was visiting Ali

once and happened to stop by at our

library and thats when I met her for

the first time.

And whats with that hand signal,

Yogi was curious to know. Yogi its the

sign language used by people who cant

hear or talk to communicate with each

other replied Ali. Yogi was surprised

to hear that and before he would

ascertain what he just heard, Ali

confirmed with his gentle smile Yes

Yogi, Ayesha is deaf. I am sorry to

10
hear that Ayesha, hi, I am Yogi, Meg

helped Yogi by passing on the message

to Ayesha through her sign language.

But Meg how did you learn this Ali

asked Meg. I dont know much, I just

know few important ones like Hello,

thank you and I am sorry replied Meg,

Last time when Ayesha was here, Ali

taught me this

Wow, nice Ali, would you be kind

enough to teach me also few signs

Yogi requested Ali. Sure Yogi. And

guys do you know Ayesha is very good

with flute and she has created a

special song for my birthday. We are

waiting for her music teacher who will

be also joining her to play that special

song for me

Dont worry kids; I am not going to

delay the cake cutting celebration. I

love cakes too! came a voice from

behind. A young man not older than 30

with a black hat, red coat, blue denims

and with his perfect sun glasses was

standing at the door with a guitar bag

on his shoulders.

12
Hello everyone, I am Master William

and the privileged one who will be

always Master no matter how old I

grow all the elders giggled as Master

William introduced himself to the kids.

Ayesha came forward to greet her

Master and introduced him to Ali,

Birthday boy, wish you many happy

returns of the day! Now without

further ado lets present the special

birthday music composed by Ayesha,

especially for you.

13
14
As Master William was tuning his

guitar strings, Ayesha got her flute.

Meanwhile, Ali and his friends settled

down around them. Master William

signaled Ayesha that he is ready. As

soon as Ayesha blew air inside her

flute, the room went pin drop silent

and got filled with melody. It was the

melodious twist to Happy birthday

song, the sound of flute was soothing

as well as pleasant. After few minutes

Master William strummed his guitar

and synchronized with the music of

flute. The duet of guitar and flute

filled the room with energy. The

composition was nothing short of being

termed Magical. Master William

waved to all the kids to join in and lead

them to sing Happy Birthday Song to

the birthday boy as he gleefully cut

his birthday cake.

The party carried on and children got

busy with munching of snacks and

cakes. Yogi asked Ayesha, Does

playing the flute take lot of air?

Ayesha replied by nodding Yes and

Refer Word Power on page no. 42

16
Master Williams added to it Playing

the flute does take a lot of air, but

its important to learn how to control

the air than rather than just blow

hard. A flute player must learn to

breathe correctly to take in the

maximum amount of air and then use

their muscles to support the air stream

while releasing it in a very controlled

manner. Good flute players also know

how to correctly shape their

embouchures (the way their lips are

shaped) and adjust the space between

17
their lips to focus the air so there is

minimal waste. Using these techniques,

a flute player can play long phrases

without taking a breath.

Meg got her hand around Ayesha and

said You are awesome to which all

present in the room cheered Ayesha

and Master William with claps. Sir,

why are you still wearing your sun

glasses? asked Ali. Thats my style

replied Master William, Just kidding

Ali, I am blind and these glasses

18
19
protect my eyes as they are sensitive

to light.

For a moment, the room was filled with

silence. The kids were shocked and

couldnt believe what they heard.

Since the time Master William entered

he was moving around comfortably,

played a great composition with Ayesha

and not once gave a cue of his inability

to see.

But Sir, we just couldnt make out

said Ali, Ayesha gestured something

through her hands, Meg couldnt

20
comprehend this time. Ayeshas mom

who was present in the room helped

them with what she intended to say,

When God gives you one weakness, he

blesses you with two strengths said

Ayeshas mom. I completely agree

with Ayesha came a prompt reply

from Master William. And it's the

awareness of our strengths that helps

us discover our talents.

Sir, but at times you and Ayesha will

be facing some discomfort with your..

Meg hesitated. Handicap? Master

21
William helped her through her

question. Yes Meg initially it does but

as Ayesha mentioned our other senses

come alive to make us also live a

regular life and enjoy all the wonders

and beauty of life just like you. Let

me ask you a question, have you all

seen a sunrise?

Everybody answered yes

So, how does it look like? Master

William asked.

22
A bright red glow in the morning said

Yogi.

Shades of orange and red corrected

another child present in the party.

With the sweet melodious chirping of

the birds in the background added

Ayesha.

Ah ha! new characters are entering

the scene.

Sir how is the sunrise to you? Ayesha

asked.

23
24
Master William smiled and said Its

the warmth of the sun in your palms

after a cold night, the dew on your

feet as you step on the lawns, the

chirping of birds as they sing along to

greet you in the morning and its hope

of a bright day.

Beautiful is the word that Meg could

muster.

Yes kids I have not seen a sunrise but

I feel the warmth of the sun..

continued Master Williams, I have

connected my observations, readings,

25
hearing to experience the spectacular

sunrise. Its the individuals ability to

use each part of the body and every

sense to achieve much more. If you

have the will no obstacle can ever stop

you from reaching your goal. I am

happy that each one of you have

acknowledged and are appreciating

mine and Ayeshas skills and willpower.

Dont make us feel special. What

makes us happy is when we are with all

of you and having fun just like you.
