Accelerator position sensor

Converts depression amount of the accelerator


pedal to an electric signal and sends it to the
ECU. A hall device provided inside the sensor
causes the output voltage to change according to
the opening degree of the accelerator pedal.

Engine (NE sensor) speed sensor

Two kinds of engine speed sensor are used:


engine speed sensor and auxiliary engine speed
sensor. The engine speed sensor is mounted on
the flywheel housing to detect engine speed and
crank position. The auxiliary engine speed
sensor is mounted on the supply pump to send
the cylinder distinction signal.

A thermistor whose resistance changes


according to the ambient temperature is used as
a sensor to detect the fuel temperature.

Coolant temperature sensor

A thermistor whose resistance changes


according to the ambient temperature is used as
a sensor. Changes in the resistance of the
sensor are detected and converted to the coolant
temperature.

Common rail pressure sensor

This sensor is mounted on the common rail and


detects fuel pressure. It is a semiconductor
pressure sensor whose resistance changes
when pressure is applied to the silicon.

Common rail

The common rail is attached to the intake


manifold and distributes fuel transformed into
high pressure by the supply pump to the injector
of each cylinder. The following parts are mounted
on the common rail.

Flow damper
High-pressure pipes for the injectors are
connected to the flow damper. It is used to
reduce fluctuation of pressure inside the common
rail and inside the high-pressure pipes. It is also
used to close a fuel passage if excessive fuel
passes the flow damper.

Pressure limiter
This limiter opens to release pressure if the
pressure inside the common rail becomes
extremely high.

Injector

The injector consists of a three-way solenoid


valve (TWV), orifice, hydraulic piston and nozzle.
The nozzle is always exposed to fuel pressure.
When the TWV is turned ON (i.e., TWV is
powered ON: the arrow shifts to the left), high-
pressure fuel in the control chamber begins to
flow out through the orifice. As a result, the
nozzle's needle valve moves up, causing
injection to start. When the TWV is turned OFF
(i.e., TWV is powered OFF), high -pressure fuel
flows into the control chamber through the orifice.
As a result, the needle valve is forced down by
the hydraulic piston, causing injection to stop.
The TWV is turned ON/OFF by signals from the
ECU.

Supply pump

The supply pump consists of a main body, feed


pump and Pump Control Valve (PCV), and is
driven by the engine via a coupling. The pump
main body sucks and feeds fuel as the plunger
operates in a reciprocating motion. The fuel
discharge is controlled as the PCV is powered on
by the ECU.

Feed pump

The rotor of the feed pump is driven by the cam


shaft. As the rotor rotates, the vane is forced
outward due to centrifugal force. Since the rotor
is off centered within the pressure chamber, fuel
present between vanes is compressed and
discharged from a discharge port.
