Building a Granulator

The goal of this exercise is to build a simple granulator


model, run it, and review the results.
The completed model we show here is

New Simulation

Open Aspen Plus and click New


Choose Blank Simulation

Components
You will start out in the Properties Environment
Open the Components form on the Navigation Pane and enter Urea
Change the Component ID to UREA-S and the Type to Solid
Click the next button in the Run group on the Home tab

Base Method

Select an appropriate base method. The simple example


uses Ideal

Flow Sheet
Enter the Simulation Environment and build the flow sheet below
You can find all of the necessary unit operations on the Solids tab on the
model palette

Stream Class

In Setup>Solids set the stream class to MIXCIPSD

PSD Mesh

In Setup>Solids>PSD, define the PSD mesh as Equidistant, 200


intervals, 0-2 mm

MELT

Define the MELT stream on the Mixed tab (because it is a fluid stream)
Flash Type: Temperature, Pressure Total flow basis: Mass
Temperature: 130 C Total flow rate: 5 kg/sec
Pressure: 3 bar Composition: Mass-frac, Urea-S = 1

RECYCLE

Define RECYCLE on the CI


Solid tab (because it is a solid
stream)
Substream name: CIPSD
Temperature: 90 C
Pressure: 1 bar
Total flow basis: Mass
Total flow rate: 1.2 kg/sec
Composition: Mass-frac,
Urea-S = 1
Particle Size Distribution:
Populate using: A distribution
function
Type of distribution function:
RSSB
Dispersion parameter: 4
D63: 0.9 mm

While the results form is active, click on the PSD button in the Plot group
on the Home tab to generate a PSD plot
