COMMITTEES

1/ UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHT COUNCIL (UNHRC)


TOPIC-The UN as Truth Commission
After 25 years of negotiations, the UN General Assembly in 2007 adopted
the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, without doubt the
most advanced human rights instrument created for sub-state peoples. The
standards laid out in the declaration are a remarkable achievement for the
international Indigenous movement.

2/ TRUTH AND RECONCILLIATION COMMITTEE (TRC)


TOPIC- The Cameroon Anglophone revolt- An Unfinished Nation
The TRC is mandated:
1. To document history of Human Rights abuses and effects
2. To publicize survivors stories, testimonies and memories
3. To issue a report with recommendations
4. Recommendation must reflect all parties victims, survivors,
government and church
5. Such recommendations must include improved social, economic and
political services
6. If necessary, TRC can recommend perpetrators for criminal prosecution

3/ INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL (ICT)


TOPIC- 100 days of slaughter: The Rwandan Genocide

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an international tribunal that sits


in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICC has the jurisdiction to prosecute
individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity,
and war crimes.

4/ INTERNATIONAL PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS (IPO)


TOPIC-Syrian refugees crisis
Chapter VI of the UN Charter emphasizes the pacific settlement of disputes with the
purpose of;
a) Restoring the States ability to provide security and maintain public order
b) Strengthening the rule of law12 and respect for human rights
c) Supporting the emergence of legitimate political institutions and participatory
processes
d) Promoting social and economic recovery and development, including the safe
return or resettlement of internally displaced persons and refugees uprooted by
conflict.
