of Shri Shirdi Sai and connect the devotees of our Baba

"Man's Endeavour

Realizing how precious the human life is, and

knowing that Death is certain and may snatch us at
any time, we should be ever alert to achieve the
object of our life, we should not make the least delay
but make every possible haste to gain our object,
just as a widower is most anxious to get himself
married to a new bride, or just as a king leaves no
stone unturned to seek his lost son. So with all
earnestness and speed, we should strive to attain
our end, i.e., self-realization. Casting aside sloth and
laziness, warding off drowsiness, we should day and
night meditate on the Self. If we fail to do this, we
reduce ourselves to the level of beasts.

How to Proceed?
The most effective and speedy way to gain our
object is to approach a worthy Saint or Sage -
Sadguru, who has himself attained God-vision. What
cannot be achieved by hearing religious lectures and
study of religious works, is easily obtained in the
company of such worthy souls. Just as the sun
alone gives light, which all the stars put together
cannot do, so the Sad-Guru alone imparts spiritual
wisdom which all the sacred books and sermons

Life of Sai Baba

Babas Earlier Years at Shirdi

The contemptible pagal fakir, as they called him,
was turned overnight into the hero or the weird
magician or the holy Sadhu of the place. Before
this, Mahlsapathy and his two friends Tukaram
Darji and Appa Bhil had been perhaps the only
persons to worship him. Now other people also
began to flock to his feet and worship him as a
Divine Saint or God, much against his will, with
waving of lamps, throwing of flowers and coloured
rice over him and offers of fruit and sandal.
However strenuously Baba tried to prevent his
being worshipped as God or a Godman in the
Mosque, he could not stem the tide of popular
frenzy. They presently declared he was their God
or Godman sent to bless them. It was thus, the
pagal fakir became the God or Godman of Shirdi.

Such a change could not continue for long without

obstruction. Worship of anything except the
Impersonal God in a Mosque is forbidden by the
Koran, and the Muslims, though few and poor at
Shirdi, raised their protest against such worship.
He himself might have felt at first the
incongruity of his being worshipped at all and
next the worship being carried on in a Mosque by
the mass of Hindus to the accompaniment of all
that Hindu worship implies, that is, the din, the
bustle, the noise, the music, and the sacred
rituals all of which would be totally unwarranted
in a Mosque. Even his being
debaubed with sandal paste would strike any
Muslim as extremely unorthodox and
reprehensible, Abdul Rangari of Thana when
visiting Baba noted that sandal paste was being
applied by the Hindus to his forehead, and he told
Baba, 'What is this? The Hindus are applying
sandal paste to your forehead. This is not the
custom among the Muslims." Baba had to appease
him by pointing out that he had to bend to
circumstances. Baba's words were Jaisa Desh
Aiysa Vesh. This means, 'While in Rome do as the
Romans do'. Baba also told Rangari that he
himself was a devotee of Allah. But if the Hindus
wished to please themselves by worshipping him,
why not allow them to do so? To other similar
objectors Baba pointed out that if Hindus
worshipped a Muslim in a Mosque41 then there
was no loss to Islam but only loss to Hinduism.
That seemed a very plausible argument and
contented many. But some were still dissatisfied
with the puja that was being done to him, and
some of the more vigorous opponents of his puja
went to consult the Sangamnare Kazi for finding a
remedy. That Kazi found that the only chance of
obstructing this heterodox haram puja was by
threat of force. The Hindus were no doubt the
majority in the village, but the actual worshippers
were only a handful, and a few muscular Muslims,
standing at the entrance to the Mosque, and
threatening force could stop this haram.
Accordingly a very stout, muscular, powerful and
well-built Muslim by name Tambuli and four or
five others went up to the entrance to the
Mosque and stood there with
clubs one morning. The chief worshipper
Mahlsapathy was a very slim, meek, and
apparently cowardly sort of person, and they
hoped to stop his puja by their threats. Tambuli
went and explained to Mahlsapathy the exact
position, namely, that he ran the risk of being
clubbed by the Muslims if he entered the Mosque
and applied sandal paste to Baba. Mahlsapathy in
his great shock and grief prayed to Khandoba and
hit upon an alternative. He went upto the
compoundwall of the Mosque and without entering
into the Mosque, used all the puja articles that he
had brought on a plate, for worshipping a part of
the compound wall itself into which by Avahana he
invoked Baba. After such invocation or Avahana,
he went on applying water, flowers and scents to
the wall. Baba noted this and asked him what he
was doing, Mahlsapathy explained that the
Muslims there threatened to beat any one who
would enter into the Mosque and worship Baba
with sandal paste. Then Baba
judged the situation very correctly and said,
'Come in. Go on doing your puja. Apply your sandal
paste here, there and anywhere. Let me see who
will beat you'. So saying he dashed his satka, a
short club, which he had in his hand on the ground
with such a thunderous sound that the few
Muslims at the entrance trembled. They found
that they would have to reckon with Baba himself
if they wished to pursue their plan, and Baba,
individually and physically, would be more than a
match for them. Besides, Baba was a weird
personality who could turn water in oil, and they
had therefore still greater fear in trying to
oppose Baba. So they considered discretion the
better part of valour and retreated quietly.
Mahlsapathy entered and carried on the worship.
Mahlsapathy feared that they might attack him
on his way back home, and he told Baba of his
fears. Baba then gave him the assurance that not
merely these, but any others who would come to
attack him not merely at that
time but at any other time in any other place, and
not merely in this janma, but in future janmas
also, could do him no harm and Baba would see to
it. Thus assured Mahlsapathy who finished his
puja and was not molested. Thus all joined in
Baba's worship.

 About Shirdi

STONE ON WHICH BABA SAT

This stone is placed in the center of the eastern

wall of Dwarakamai in a small Mandap. Baba used
to sit on this stone facing west. Marble Padukas
were installed on this stone. The legend has it,
that this stone was in Lendibagh. Abdullah, like
the other villagers, used to wash clothes on it.
Then they saw ^aba sitting on it. So they brought
it to Dwarakamai and venerated it as Baba's Asan.

D.D. Neroy of Bombay was a great devotee of

Baba who made many photo prints of Baba with
one of the eleven sayings. Usually he would write,
"If you look to Me, I look to you ". He was a photo
merchant and made this beautiful photo. It took
him three years to get this photo painted and one
and half months to frame it. On the advice of
Kamu Baba, he presented it to the Sansthan to be
kept in the Sabha Mandap.

He has signed only one photo of Baba and this

photo is in the Mangal Karyalay.

Baba has given Sakshatkar (darshan) from this

photo with blessings and healings.

Sai Baba Sayings

101. Without Gods permission, nothing can be
done by me.
102. G.G.Narke. Do not blame me for not giving
you a Kupni. That Fakir (God) has not permitted
me.
103. Hallo. Do I demand dakshina of every one ? I
demand only from those whom The Fakir points
out to me.
I do nothing. I receive nothing. Datta calls for his
own. He had called for Rs.15 his due and given it
to Masudi Ayi. So, the money has been received
(by me).
104. If Gods, like Datta, are easily accessible on
the way and if one does not take darshan of them
how can I help him ?
104-A. Baba is but a Phaladata; you must do good.
Baba: If you do good and surrendered it to God,
good will come to you. God the Lord of them that
do good. Both wicked and virtuous want good
things from me? How (or whence) can I give? (i.e.
If they have not put forward the good karma
warranting the gift)

Disappearance of Moreshwar's Asthama

Moreshwar Pradhan was a close devotees of Sai
Baba. He was a judge in Bombay High court. He
was suffering from acute Asthama. He used to be
a partner of my grandfather whenever they used
to play the Bridge (a game of cards). For the cure
of his Asthama my grandfather advised him to
visit Shirdi and he obliged. On his very first visit
to Shridi when he met Sai Baba he was offered to
inhale the 'Chilim' (a clay pipe which Baba used to
smoke) which Baba gave him personally.
Moreshwar was rather worried but he inhaled the
'Chilim' and it was a miracle. From that moment
onwards he never got any attack of Asthama.
What a strange way of curing a person of his
ailment. Moreshwar thanked my grandfather and
from then on became an ardent devotee of Shri
Sai Baba. It was a Vijayadashmi day of the year
1918, and late afternoon suddenly Moreshwar got
an attack of Asthama. The attack was severe and
he had send his servant to Bandra and requested
my grandfather to come to Santacruz to his
residence. Moreshwar's servant told my
grandfather that his master has suddenly taken
ill and requested him to rush for his help. Then
my grandfather along with my father left their
house. Offcourse they carried along with them
the 'Udi', which Baba had given personally to
them on their last visit to Shirdi. They saw
Moreshwar in utter distress. My grandfather
consoled him. He put Baba's 'Udi' in a glass of
water and requested Moreshwar to drink the
same. Moreshwar obeyed my grandfather as he
was reckoning him to be his very close friend. No
sooner had he drank the water than the intensity
of the attack went on reducing and in a short
while he was feeling relieved. Moreshwar asked
my grandfather stating that Baba had said that
his Asthama has gone for ever in which case how
come the revival of the attack? My grandfather
advised him not to worry and in the event it
happens again he should consume Baba's Udi as
medicine. However Moreshwar was not required
to do so any more. The consumption of Udi had
certainly reduced the Asthama attack but there
was an altogether different kind of message
behind this incident, which they all realized later
on. On that very day at about 2 p.m. Sai Baba had
taken Samadhi in Shirdi and while doing so he had
sent in his typical way wireless messages to all his
ardent devotees. Of course my grandfather and
father had also received this wireless message
which I will narrate to you all in a later chapter.
