Personalized Poet Study

Step 1: Researching Your Poet & His/Her Contributions

Background:
You will be studying and analyzing the work of one poet on an

individual basis. During the course of this project, you will be
researching, reading, analyzing, and creating a product (more to come on this later). After
gathering your information, you will be presenting your findings to some of your peers. This
presentation will be followed up by a Q & A session with your peers (again, more to come on
this part later). For now, we simply need you to worry about learning more about your poet.

What resources do you have?

Books
Internet
o Academic/credible sources ONLY! (i.e. The Poetry Foundation)
MMW Media Center, including the online databases (Ms. Carcamo will be providing
information!)

**This project a minimum of (4) credible sources.

What options for poets do you have?

Technically, as long as you can show depth and complexity with the answers below, any poet
is eligible. However, here are some ideas for poets that have worked well in the past on this
type of project:
Robert Frost e.e. cummings
Emily Dickinson Maya Angelou
Langston Hughes Carl Sandburg
Walt Whitman Edgar Allan Poe
Naomi Shihab Nye Pablo Neruda

*Before your commit to one of these poets, you should spend some time checking the databases to confirm
that you can find enough information about the poet!

Guiding questions for your research:

1. How was this poets poetry shaped by the events and situations in his/her life
(childhood, education, career, family and any other relevant information)?
This would include important biographical information life span, family, career,
strange happenings, etc., but you will be asked to extend your thinking beyond
a simple list of this information.
2. What
common themes or topics do you see that emerge when you consider multiple
poems (at least 3) by this poet?
Annotated copies of these poems will need be to be included with your project.
3. What stylistic choices did this author employ to enhance his/her poetry?
This would include their figurative language and poetic devices of choice that
commonly appear in his/her writing.
Again, you will be asked to expand your thinking by explaining and analyzing
how these contributed meaning and significance to his/her work.
4. How can you create a poem that mimics the stylistic choices and/or related themes in
a unique piece of poetry? (Obviously you will not worry about this until AFTER you
have completed your research on the previous questions).
Technically, you will not be researching this, but this question is being provided
so that you can be thinking about it as youre reading and researching.
5. After your research, Choose another poet/songwriter. How can I extend this research
to a Global or Current Poet? What would I want to find out about a modern day poet?
Are there modern day poets who have similar stylistic choices and themes? How
would I go about finding and connecting with a modern day poet?
Technically, you will not be researching this, but this question is being provided
so that you can be thinking about it as youre reading and researching.
Framework Incorporation:
1. Framework Goal: Two aspects of the framework: Choose two that you would like to
strive to incorporate into your project
2. Set the goal by stating: I chose, and I will meet this goal through...
3. Reflection: Did you meet your goal? How? Did you not meet your goal? Why? or did
they end up doing a different goal? Explain process that led you to this change
