LESSON PLAN OUTLINE
Level 1

Name: Ashlee Spaits Grade Level: Third grade

Date: February 19, 17 Approximate length of time: 45 minutes
School: N/A Subject: Math-Graphing

Title: Graphing Contest

Common Core Standard:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.B.3
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set
with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and
"how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar
graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph
might represent 5 pets.
Objectives:
Students will define data on a bar graph.
Students will identify parts of a bar graph.
Students will interpret information from a bar graph.
Students will create bar graph using information gathered from
classmates.
Materials
The Great Graph Contest book.
Paper
Pencil
Crayons

Purpose
By the end of this lesson students will be able to identify the parts of a bar
graph. Students will be able to construct a bar graph with information given
to them. Students will be able to identify the parts of a bar graph.
Introduction
Teacher will read The Great Graph Contest
Throughout the story teacher will show students the bar graphs in the
pictures and tell students the parts of the graphs.

Rev 11-2-07 1
Post-story teacher will review the parts of a bar graph.
Guided Practice
Teacher will draw a graph on the white board.
Teacher will demonstrate a bar graph by using information from her
class.
Teacher will make a bar graph showing the numbers of boys and the
number of girls in the class.
Independent
Teacher will give each student his or her own piece of paper.
Students will think of a question that they can ask all students.
(Example: how many pets do you have? What color is your hair? What
color are your eyes?)
After students have thought of a question to ask their peers students
will make a bar graph, labeling the Y and X axis.
Teacher will then proceed to tell students to walk around the classroom
asking their peers their questions.
Teacher will instruct students that once they have all their information
students will go back to their desks and make their bar graphs.
Teacher will ask for any question.

Review
Teacher will use bar graph paper as data to support the instruction.
Post-tests will give more data.
