synopsis
The following is a simple document providing visual guidance on the process required to
install Ciscos Prime Data Center Network Manager (DCNM) software. It assumes access to
the installation binaries, and administrative access to the workstation youre installing the
software on.

document is 5.2.2; some of the information may change with later releases.

Right-click on the installation binary and select Run as administrator and provide suitable
credentials.

The most enjoyable part of using Cisco software is their choice of stock photos.

Read the Introduction, and click Next to continue.

The link to the installation guide is a good idea. I recommend that you read it if youre
unfamiliar with DCNM.

In this example well be selecting DCNM-SAN, as Im using the software to manage MDS FC
fabrics.

I dont have a DCNM license, so Ill be using DCNM in Standalone mode. Leave Express
unticked and click Next to continue.

As I dont have an existing PostgreSQL or Oracle environment available, Ill be installing a

copy of PostgreSQL on my workstation.

Select passwords that are both secure and memorable. Let me assure you it is no fun to
upgrade DCNM when youre uncertain of the required username / password combination.

Youll need to enable the Secondary Logon service to get PostgreSQL working.

Youll then need to setup a local admin account.

If you have RADIUS or TACACS+ you can use them. Note that this is for DCNM access only.
I use Local mode for DCNM but access my fabrics with TACACS+.

Select an appropriate location for the shortcut. It might be nice to select Create Icons for All
Users if you have other users accessing this installation.

Youll then see a pre-installation summary, which is worth double-checking.

And then we wait for some time for DCNM to install. In my case it was about 20 minutes, as
my anti-virus software was going berserk trying to defend my workstation from this software.

Like I said, it takes a little while.

Once the installation has completed, youll be told as much. Click on Done.

By default, you can find DCNM under Start Programs - Cisco DCNM Server - DCNM SAN
SA. Cisco Device Manager is also there, although you can launch this from within DCNM if
required.

Login using the username and password you setup during the installation.

The first time you login youll be prompted to perform a Discovery.

Enter the IP address of the Seed Switch in your fabric, and a valid username and password
for the fabric and click on Discover.
If your credentials are correct, youll see a message saying Discovering [blah] in the
dialogue box.

If it takes a while to discover larger fabrics, DCNM asks if you want to keep waiting.
Unfortunately this only a yes / no question, there is no button for hurry up.

When the discovery is complete, youll be advised that the fabric has been discovered.

Youll then see the fabric listed in the Control Panel under the Open tab.

To open the fabric, click on Select and click on Open.

To add more than one fabric, click on Fabrics and then click on Discover.

At this point youll be prompted for information in the same way as when you did the initial
discovery. This is useful if you are running multiple fabrics.
Note that if you are using DCNM unlicensed you can only open one Fabric at a time.
