5E Plan: Newtons First Law of Motion

Day 1
Engage Students will watch a short video of the magic trick where a
tablecloth is pulled out from under objects on the table. Students will
be asked why they think it worked.
Explore Galileos experiment. The teacher will set up the inclined plane set-
up in front of the class and ask students to predict what they think will
happen when the ball is released. Students will observe the height of
the ball at several angles of incline, writing down their observations
and answering follow-up questions on a worksheet.
Explain Direct instruction (PowerPoint). Using a short PowerPoint
presentation, the teacher will go over the results from Galileos lab
and show how they relate to Newtons First Law. Students will take
notes in their notebook.

Day 2
Explore Water Activity. Students will do an outdoor activity where they fill
cups to the brim with water, and walk briskly around the courtyard.
The teacher will ask them to think about at what points the water
tends to slosh or spill.
Explain Direct instruction (Textbook). Students will do a guided reading of
the textbook chapter on Newtons First Law with the teacher. Students
will take notes in their notebooks of bolded words and concepts from
the text.

Day 3
Engage Bellwork. Students will answer an anticipatory question about what
happened in at least one instance when they come to a sudden stop
in a car or other vehicle. The teacher will guide a short discussion as
students share their experiences.
Elaborate Toy Car Experiment. In groups of 3-4 at their table, students will
do a multi-part experiment using toy cars and pennies on an inclined
plane. These experiments will explore the effects of inertia in a car
crash. For each section, students will make predictions, take
measurements, and write-up their results and conclusions. The
teacher will monitor, answer questions, and provide assistance.

Day 4
Elaborate Toy Car Experiment, continued. If students do not finish the lab in
one day, part of the class period will be devoted to finishing.
Elaborate - Instructional Booklet. The teacher will give students instructions
on how to create a booklet on Newtons First Law. Students will work
individually on their booklets. The teacher will monitor and answer
questions as they work.

Day 5
Elaborate Instructional Booklet, continued. Students will finish work on their
booklets and present their work to their peers in groups. The teacher
will observe the students as they make rounds around the classroom.

Day 6
Evaluate Formative Assessment. Students will take a quiz on Newtons First
Law. The teacher will proctor the assessment.
