Set-up: What will you do to ensure everything is ready and
waiting for the lesson?
Have music (or fiddle, guitar, and base players), drums, song books ready for the drum
dance/square dance and PowerPoint showing instructions of the different movements and
songs.

Pre-Assessment: Where does this lesson fit into your unit plan -
introductory, middle, culminating? What do the students already know
about this topic?

This lesson fits in introductory, so students can learn the songs and dance moves.
Students understand the messages in the drum dances and examples of square
dances.

Objective (s): What knowledge, skills and/or attitudes will the


students accomplish by the end of the lesson? Take directly from the
Planning the Lesson organizer.

Lesson Procedures:
Motivation/Anticipatory Set: Think of a new and exciting way to capture your
students attention and hold it until the end of the lesson.

Bring in a group of drummers and dancers I know of, and demonstrate dances,
and songs.

Sequence of Lesson: This is a well thought out process of how you will
teach the objective, which includes student participation at all levels. What
key questions will you ask the students?

Use prepared PowerPoint instructions; Drum Dance or Square


Dance
Introduce the song (lesson) of the day, prior to schedule
As a class, practice singing the song
Drummer practice drumming
Dancers practice dancing
Ask questions: e.g. Who are Inuvialuit?

Closure/Summary: Give a brief summary or overview of the


concept taught.
Use questioning to ensure that all students understand the task
at hand, what types of things can be included and the
expectations for the presentation.

Name/sing/drum/play a traditional song, particularly a song they enjoyed.

Perform a song or traditional dance.

Journal reflections, as well as, observing their performance in dancing and


singing.
