MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Assessment of Progress
First Semester of Internship
Kaitlyn Diller
Completed 12/13/2014

Miss Diller is well prepared when she is teaching a lesson. The objective is stated at the very
beginning to the students and is evident throughout her lesson. She speaks clearly and with
confidence, and her students are attentive. She asks specific questions to access the students prior
knowledge, and then leads the students into a discussion presenting the new information. Miss Diller
implements several ways for a student to share what they are thinking; she will ask individuals, or ask
students to share with their partner and then with the whole class, or she may ask an individual to share
what their partner thought. This engages all students in discussion and free inquiry. When a student
shares, Miss Diller initiates purposeful interactions by asking the class as a whole, to agree or
respectfully disagree and explain why. The students have been taught how to participate, to be
respectful to each other, and demonstrate the high expectations Miss Diller has shared with them.

Miss Dillers lessons are often enriched by her creative activities. She uses different types of media,
particularly the computer and camera doc, and presents the subject matter in a fun, interactive, all
inclusive, way. Miss Diller knows it is important to help students connect with the information
presented, as it is to connect the subject matter to the world beyond school.

Miss Diller is aware of her students who need a challenge and those who need support. She quickly,
informally assesses each student after her lessons, in a variety of ways. She then differentiates the
individual work according to their ability. Partners are chosen taking academic and social aspects into
consideration. As students are working, Miss Diller moves around observing the students work,
helping those who need it, challenging those who are ready, and giving encouragement to all of them.

Rules and regulations have been shared, practiced, revisited when necessary and students have begun
internalizing them. Miss Diller rarely has to respond to inattention, but when necessary, does so
quickly and quietly in order to not take time from the lesson.

Reflection is an important piece of teaching for Miss Diller. She has shared her thoughts with me
several times in our debriefing. She focuses on how she can deliver the subject matter using the best
practices known, in an engaging, interactive way. She is open-minded, readily accepts constructive
feedback, and takes her responsibilities seriously. She has shared with me, I want to be the best
teacher I can possibly be!

High expectations have been met in the categories assessed in the first semester of internship for
Kaitlyn Diller.
