Exploring File Formats

There are a variety of file formats used in the industry today. Each has their varying
capacities, capabilities and uses. Some are quite popular others are lesser known.
Some are compressed others uncompressed. Some are Raster and others are
Vector.
Compressed Vs Uncompressed:
The Objective of Image compression is to reduce irrelevance and redundancy of
image data in order to be able to store or transmit data in an efficient form.
Raster Vs Vector:
Raster graphics is a dot matrix data structure and are generally a rectangular grid of
pixels or points of color.
Vector graphics use polygons to represent images in computer graphics
Lossy vs Lossless:
Lossy compression or irreversible compression is a class of data encoding methods
that uses inexact approximations and partial data discarding to represent the
content thus the loss of quality and the appearance of a courser image.
Lossless compressions or reversible compression is a class of data compression
algorithms that allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the
compressed data.
