Ukulele Teaching Plan

Objectives

Student will play the chords G, C, Em, and D on the ukulele.

Student will learn a strumming pattern on the ukulele.

Student will play and sing along to Ingrid Michealsons song, Just the Way I Am.

Standards

Anchor Standard #5 Develop and refine artistic work for presentation.

Materials

Ukulele

Visual Aids

On-screen lyrics with chords

On-screen tabs

Procedure

I will welcome the student to my video session.

I will explain that I will be teaching how to sing an play Just the Way I Am on the ukulele.

I will play the first verse of the song as an example.

I will teach the strumming pattern by playing a down-up strum.

I will encourage the student to take a few seconds to practice strumming.


I will explain that I will be teaching the song in the key of G.

I will explain that the chords needed to play the song are G, C, Em, and D.

I will teach the G chord by telling where the fingers are placed and by using an on-screen tab.

I will encourage the student to take a few seconds to get comfortable strumming the G chord.

I will teach the C chord by telling where the fingers are placed and by using an on-screen tab.

I will encourage the student to take a few seconds to get comfortable strumming the C chord.

I will teach the Em chord by telling where the fingers are placed and by using an on-screen tab.

I will encourage the student to take a few seconds to get comfortable strumming the Em chord.

I will teach the D chord by telling where the fingers are placed and by using an on-screen tab.

I will encourage the student to take a few seconds to get comfortable strumming the D chord.

I will explain that for the first two lines, the chords are played in the order of G, C, Em, and

then D for each line.

I will sing and play the first two lines.

I will explain that for the second two lines the chords are played in the order of C, D, G, and

the Em.

I will sing and play the second two lines.

I will sing and play the first verse.

I will invite the student to play along.

I will explain that the chords are the same for the following verses.

I will explain that for the last two lines, the chords are played in the order of C, D, Em, D, C,

D, C, and then G.

I will sing and play the last two lines.


I will explain that an optional A7 can be played instead of the D.

I will invite the student to sing and play the last verse and ending lines along with me.

I will explain that there is a link directing the student to the full song for more practice.

I will thank the student for watching my video lesson.

Assessment

Comments or questions left on my video may be the only way to determine if the students

understood the lesson.

Adaptations

Use more visual aids

Host a live video session where students could send in questions while I teach.
