Tutorial-1 (L3-L6)
1. The weekly discharge of a typical hydroelectric plant is given in table. The plant has an
effective head of 15 m and an overall efficiency of 85% . If the plant operates on 40%
load factor, estimate (i) Draw the Hydrograph and find the average daily discharge (ii)
Installed capacity of proposed plant.
2. A load which is situated near a river requires continuous power of 500 kW all through the
year. Head=25m. The water flow in a year is i) 6 m3/s for 4 months ii) 4 m3/s for 2
months and iii) 2 m3/s for 6 months. Assuming the overall plant efficiency as 80%, Find
i) the rating of standby unit required if there is no reservoir and ii) with reservoir, what
will be the excess power available?
3. The available discharge for a hydro power plant is 320 m3/s . The generator with 24 poles
is directly coupled to the turbine & the frequency is 50 Hz. Calculate the head required, if
the number of Kaplan turbines used is 6 & the specific speed of the turbine is 500.Take
of the turbine = 90% and load factor=0.65.
3. Calculate the inductance of each conductor in a 3-phase, 3-wire system when the
conductors are arranged in a horizontal plane with spacing such that D31 = 4m ; D12 = D23
= 2m. The conductors are transposed and have a diameter of 2.5 cm.
4. Compute the GMR of the i) 3 ii) 4 & iii) 7 stranded conductors with radius of each strand
as r. Comment on the results obtained.
5. A single phase transmission line has 2 conductors each of 1.8cm in diameter. The
capacitance of each conductor, neglecting the effect of earth, is 8.4 nF / km. Determine
the distance between the conductors. Also calculate the new value of capacitance, if the
conductors are mounted at a height of 6.5m above the ground, for the same distance
between the conductors. Comment on the results.
6. A 3 phase transposed line is composed of Bobolink conductors per phase with flat
horizontal spacing of 11 m between two adjacent phases. The conductor has a GMR of
1.5 cm. The line is to be replaced by a 3 equilateral spaced sub-conductor bundle of
Hawk conductors. Each sub-conductor has a GMR of 0.9 cm. The new line will also have
a flat horizontal configuration, but the Inter-phase spacing is increased to 15 m from
centre to centre. The spacing between the conductors in a bundle is 45cm. Determine the
%change in inductance and capacitance.
7. Estimate the capacitance to neutral of a 50 kV, 50 Hz, 1-phase line 32 km long which
consists of 0.5 cm diameter conductors with spacing 1.5 m apart. Also determine the
charging current with the line open circuited.
8. In a single phase line conductors a and a in parallel form one circuit while conductors b
and b in parallel form the return path. Calculate the total inductance and capacitance of
the line per km assuming that current is equally shared by the two parallel conductors.
