INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Depression is a serious problem concerning university students. It is an illness where the

feelings of depression persist and intervene with the students functional ability (Rantilla, 2011).

It affects a lot of aspects of their lives especially in their academic performance. In fact,

depression is the number one reason students drop out of school or die by suicide(Kerr, 2012).

Currently the University does not have programs that answer to this since it is outside the scope

of the schools Guidance Center. This is because depression is clinical in nature and needs

diagnosis from an actual psychiatrist. However, the researchers believe that an intervention can

be made through simple activities designed to distract and ease the students from depression. The

researchers also believe that minimizing the depression of students will help improve their

academic performances thereby promoting one of goals of the university which is to create

globally competent graduates.

The proposed research focuses on easing or moderating the depression of accountancy students

in La Salle University by suggesting activities or remedies designed or would cater accountancy

students in particular. The core indicators of this research will be (1) Quiz Scores of Students,

(2) Exam Scores of Students, (3) Students Grades, and (4) Class Attendance. This will be the

tool to improve their academic performance. It could also help the students balance their well-

being and mold them into competent graduates in the future. Ultimately, it will further improve

the name of the university dubbing the school as a student friendly institution which promotes a

healthy state of mind.

Statement of the Problem

This study investigates the relationship between depression and its treatments and the academic

performance of undergraduate accountancy students particularly in 2 nd, 3rd and 4th year levels.

The following are the objectives of the study:

1. To identify measures against depression of accountancy students and its causes

particularly
a. Family Pressure;
b. Peer Pressure;
c. Bullying;
d. Academic Failures;
e. Financial Problems;
f. Relationship Dilemmas and ;
g. Ineffective Time Management.
2. To improve the poor academic performance which is caused by student depression. Such

fields in academic performance include:

a. Quiz scores;
b. Exam Scores;
c. Grades;
d. And class Attendance.
3. Significance of the study

This study focuses on the interventions that could be made to ease or moderate the depression of

accountancy students in La Salle University. This study could benefit the following:

1. Accountancy Students: It will help the students counter the depressions they are facing.

It will also help them develop a balanced state of mind, thereby making them more

productive especially in their academics.

2. College of Accountancy: It will give the college students which are mentally stable,

productive, and competent. It will increase the good reputation of the college.
3. The University: It might help the university gain competent graduates. It will increase the

good reputation of the institution. It will also promote the name of the school as an

institution which caters to the good well-being of its students.

Scope and Limitations

The study only determines the simple interventions that could be made to counter depression and

minimize its effects on the students of the college of accountancy. Such interventions do not

include taking anti-depressant drugs and checkups with psychiatrists. The study will focus on the

4 variables (1) quiz and assignment scores of the students, (2) exam scores of the students, (3)

students grades, and (4) students class attendance.

Organization of the Study

Chapter one of this paper conveys the objectives of the study as well as its significance to the

students and the university. It also shows the scope and limitation of the research. Chapter two
will showcase similar literatures and previous studies by other researchers that relate to this

paper. Chapter three focuses on research methodology. Chapter four will be the presentation,

analysis, and interpretation of data. Chapter five will include the summary, conclusions, and

recommendations of the study after applying the techniques from the previous chapter.
