CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with

the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism,

also concerned with research, design, development, manufacture,

installation, operation, maintenance and management of equipment, plant

and systems.

I discovered this during my course of study at The Federal University of

Technology, Minna. Courses such as Engineering Mathematics, Power

System Analysis, Electrical Machines, Workshop practice, Electrical

Circuit theory, Engineering law, Engineering in Society and Management

among others exposed me to the basic theoretical aspect of engineering

practices.

The first practical experience that exposed me to the operations in

electrical engineering was during my industrial experience at Egbin

Thermal Station, Egbin during which I carried out repairs and installation

of field instruments, maintenance of alternator carbon brushes, UPS

systems routine maintenance, station and service transformer schedule

maintenance among others.

I have work in both utilities and Oil & Gas consulting company in various

capacities ranging from Electrical Engineer, Electrical Designer, and

Power Plant Operator and Maintenance Engineer.

I joined CresTech Engineering limited which is an engineering design and

consulting company, servicing the oil and gas industries with great

7

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING IN CRESTECH ENGINEERING

CresTech Engineering Limited which is an engineering design and consulting

company, designs the facilities, produces the list, specifications and data

sheets of all equipment and materials and issues all drawings required to erect

them at construction for oil and gas, Onshore and Offshore designs for

multinationals such as Chevron, Shell and Total among others. The company

metamorphosed from Crestville to CresTech Engineering Limited as a result

of successful merger with Technip Paris, a member of Technip group.

CresTech consists of various engineering discipline.

Electrical engineering is in charge of design of plant electrical power

generation and distribution. The activities of the Electrical discipline can be

categorized as follows: architecture (of the electrical power generation and

distribution system), specification of all equipment and materials and design

of installation drawings.

Electrical engineering activities start with the identification of all loads

(consumers). This is done from the equipment list generated and shall also

include electrical consumers inside packages, such as a lube oil heater,

Heating Ventilation and Air-conditioning of buildings - external lighting,

building lighting and small power, etc.

There are various stages of project involvement which include Proposal,

Conceptual design, Basic Design/ Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and

Detailed Engineering Design.

17
TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
3.1 Major Electrical Deliverables

Deliverables are the documents or drawings produced during engineering

design.

Below is the major electrical deliverables produced during the design of a

project which I had been involved:

Electrical Load List

Electrical Load List contains all electrical consumers. Equipment actual power

consumption is not available initially, as the equipment make and model is not

known at the beginning of the project. Electrical discipline estimates the

power consumption initially. The estimate is then replaced by the actual power

consumption once the equipment (make and model) has been selected.

When the consumers are identified, the total electrical power requirement of

the plant can be evaluated. This is now the sum of the power requirements of

all consumers. Certainly, they do not all operate simultaneously. A more

refined approach is required to work out the realistic overall power demand.

Consumers are classified according to their frequency of operation, as

continuous, intermittent or spare.

Continuous Loads of consumers which operate continuously when the plant

is in operation, except for breakdowns.

Intermittent machines or consumers with a start-stop cycle: pumps, external

lighting, etc.

Spare machines or consumers which act as a spare for other machines and

which do not therefore operate when the plant is in full operation.

Each type of load is assigned a diversity factor, which is applied to its

absorbed load to work out the total power requirement.

18
TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
Continuous consumers, which are the normal running loads, are rated 100%.

Intermittent consumers, such as offloading pumps working under start/ stop

cycle for instance, are rated 30%.

Spare consumers, such as pump B that operates only in case pump A does not,

are counted 10% only, etc.

The factored loads are summed up in the Electrical Load Summary, which

givens the total plant power demand and also the load on each electrical

equipment(switchboard, transformer) allowing its sizing.

Key (Overall) Single line Diagram

At the beginning of a new project the electrical engineer will draft the key

single-line diagram. The key single-line diagram shows the sources of power

e.g. generators, utility intake, the main switchboard and the interconnections

to the subsidiary switchboards. It also shows important equipment such as

power transformers, busbars, busbar section circuit breakers, incoming and

interconnecting circuit breakers, and connections to existing equipment if

these are relevant and the main earthing arrangements. The key single line

shows at least, the various voltage levels, vector group for each power

transformer and identification names and unique tag numbers of the main

equipment.

Electrical Datasheet

The datasheet for the project is a piece of document containing the parameters

needed by the equipment vendor or manufacturer to fabricate the equipment.

This is also used for the purpose of equipment installation.

19
TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
Electrical Calculations

These are performed once all consumers and electrical equipment

characteristics are known, all cables are sized, etc., the calculations will define

the right settings of electrical protections. This right setting ensures selectivity.

Selectivity means that, in case there is a short circuit on a motor, the

protection of that motor only will open, no higher level protection will open

leaving the other consumers unaffected.

Electrical Cable Schedule

This shows the list of cables, location, cable tag, and type, such as fire

resistant, section size, number of cores and length of each cable.

Electrical Typical Installation Drawings

These are drawings produced for installation and connection of electrical

equipment at Site for power, lighting, earthing, etc.

Electrical Equipment Location Drawings

These are the drawings showing location of all electrical consumers: motor

control stations, field sockets, lighting fixtures and junction boxes etc.

Electrical Bulk Material Take-off

This is prepared in order to purchase cables, cable ladders, motor local control

stations, junction boxes, cable glands and all other small installation materials.

20
TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
3.2 Coordination with other disciplines

At the beginning of the project, electrical engineer needs to identify areas of

engineering and design where interfaces are necessary.

For example:

Process engineers need to inform the electrical engineers on matters relating to

the production processes and supporting utilities.

Mechanical engineers need to advice and also give input to electrical engineer

on power consumption data for rotating machines e.g. pumps, compressors,

fans, and cranes. They will also advise on the input power options available

for different types and models of prime movers of generator e.g. gas turbines,

diesel engine, and gas engines

Instrument engineers generally develop the operation and control philosophies

for individual equipment and overall schemes. Electrical engineer interface to

get the information for interlocking and controls that affect motor control

centres and switchboards, generator control panels, local and remote station;

power supplies for control systems, AC and DC, UPS requirements, battery

systems.

TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 PROJECT ENGINEERING

Engineering of a facility is done in two different steps, conceptual phase,

which is the Basic Engineering, and an execution one, which is the Detailed

Engineering. These steps are always done in my company in which I am part

of electrical team for execution. The Basic Engineering is usually done under

an engineering services contract while detailed design is normally part of the

Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), also called turn-key

contract.

4.1 Basic Engineering

The scope of Basic Engineering also called Front End Engineering Design

(FEED) is to define the facility at a conceptual phase rather than a detailed

level. It entails defining the process scheme, the main equipment, the overall

plot plan, the architecture of systems, etc. Basic Engineering stops with the

issue of the main deliverables defining the plant, mainly the Piping and

Instrumentation Diagrams, the overall layout of the plant (Plot plant), the

specification of the main equipment, Electrical distribution diagrams and the

Process Control system architecture drawing.

4.2 Detailed Engineering

This takes place during the actual project execution phase. It consists of

producing all deliverables necessary to purchase and erect all plant equipment.

It therefore entails producing the specification and bill of quantities for all

22
TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
equipment and materials. It also entails producing all detailed installation

drawings.

Detailed Engineering integrates vendor information as purchasing of

equipment actually takes place in this phase.

4.3 Post Detailed Engineering/ Vendor Document Review (VDR)

The Post Detailed Engineering Design project stage is an interfacing stage

between the design engineer and the fabricator/ manufacturer.

This project stage involves an interaction with the manufacturer of each

component being designed. The manufacturers specification and drawing for

these equipment are reviewed by the design engineers to ensure that what is

design is exactly what is manufactured. At this stage all discrepancies between

what is designed and what can be fabricated are eliminated. A point of

compromise is reached between the designer and the manufacturer (Vendor)

while maintaining the acceptable engineering standard for all equipment.

CHAPTER FIVE

5.0 CONCLUSION

Within the last nine years of my graduation, I have been exposed to engineering
design in the field in the field of Electrical Engineering design area of oil and gas
industry.

The experience has been worthwhile as it has the basic knowledge needed to be an
engineer. It has also made me relevant to my generation by adding value to my
generation in one form or the other both to the economy and the common man.

Within the period, I have widely used engineering codes and standards that are
relevant to my field, and I have also undergone some training facilitated by both
Nigeria based and foreign engineers. Also, my exposure to the use of software helps
me to clearly appreciate the wide field of engineering which would have been in
abstract.

24
TECHNICAL REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (VOLUME I)BY BENWARI CHARLES
CHAPTER SIX

6.0 RECOMMENDATION

Gaining experience in an environment like ours in Nigeria where there is low growth

in our engineering activities and low exposure to engineering practice has been a

tasking one. The reform programme of the present government in Nigeria is a good

gesture that must be supported by all. The present Nigeria (local) content drive by the

NNPC in the oil and gas industry would really yield fruitful result for Nigerian

Engineers if genuinely implemented. It will be an avenue through which the current

harsh environmental condition been presently experienced by Nigeria engineers will

be eliminated. The project will create employment opportunities for our young and

determined engineers, it will help Nigeria to domicile its home based engineers. The

government should therefore give the good initiative the needed attention and

resources it needs to strive.

In addition, there is the need for government to increase the funding of engineering

and engineering works in Nigeria. This is needed to fund research works and launch

Nigeria made products to the outside world.
