Reverend Richard Joyner shared with the Board information about the Conetoe Family Life
Center Bee Bus project. The Bee Bus project is a recycled school bus-turned-honey bee-
hive that will help ensure better crop cultivation. The children have managed the project from the
start learning the science behind building hives, painting the bus to attract the bees back, and
harvesting honey to sell at Farmers Markets around the region. The Conetoe Family Life Center,
was established in 2007 and the mission is to improve the health of the youth and community by
increasing access to healthy foods, increasing physical activities and providing access to health
services. The goal is to change the poverty cycle in families through improving the resources
available to families, specifically children. Through community supported agriculture (CSA),
the children learn how to grow and harvest vegetables and honey. Sales proceeds are invested in
the farm, youth health programs and after-school education. The children distributed jars of
honey from the Bee Bus to the Board. Rev. Joyner informed the Board that several of the
students are going to the White House next week to help First Lady Michelle Obama in her
garden located on the White House lawn. Rev. Joyner thanked the Board, Superintendent John
Farrelly, Principals, and Child Nutrition for their support allowing them to work on the school

ITEMS BROUGHT BY BOARD MEMBERS OR SUPERINTENDENT FOR

CONSIDERATION/DISCUSSION: Member Olga Dickens stated ECPS needs to expand the
CTE programs to add horticulture, farming, health care, fire and rescue, computer and
technology to attract more students to our school system. Ms. Dickens also stated ECPS
administrators need to investigate on how to expand with ECC and CSX to bring economic
development into this county and to use publicity to our advantage.

Superintendent John Farrelly responded by stating he has had discussions over the past several
months with Rev. Joyner on expanding the Farm to School program and the possibility of
giving more students access to getting involved in the program as an after school program.
Mr. Farrelly said the churches cannot do this program alone and he would like to get others
involved in helping support the program financially and/or volunteering their time.

Superintendent John Farrelly also stated he is already planning to reach out to CSX to discuss the
possibility of establishing a partnership with ECPS and ECC for our students to have an
opportunity to work towards a degree while they are in high school or community college that
will provide training for the students so there is employment that will match the skill-set they
will have when they graduate.

Superintendent John Farrelly stated he has met with Ms. Ann Clark, Superintendent of Charlotte-
Mecklenburg to discuss college opportunities for students to obtain a two (2) year degree and
graduate ready to step into jobs. The program offers qualified high school students the
opportunity to take transfer courses and/or career-occupational courses for credit through a joint
agreement between the community college and the high school. Plans are to possibly start this
next fall. We will need to find a way for the General Assembly to help fund the program. It
could potentially involve universities. Discussions have been made regarding gauging the
interest of students in grades 6-8 and ECPS having our own separate Early College and Teacher
Ed programs. Board Chair Evelyn S. Wilson commented that the earlier we can get the students
interested in this kind of program the better. Ms. Wilson said we could look at addressing
students interest even earlier, in grades 3-5.

Board Chair Evelyn S. Wilson informed the Board she would like to expand the Board
Committees and create a Board Finance Committee. Board Attorney Deborah Stagner replied
that she will read the board policy #2230 - Board Committees and provide the Board with
feedback before the next meeting.
