aspiring writers shouldn't try to become anyone but be his or her own self. Learn from the expert, take note
of their style, but in the end, they should write their own thoughts and stories -- it's their own voice that
should be heard in their work. As Ricky Lee always say, our life experiences and our sensibility will teach us
how to write.

((Sino si Tales? Kilala nyo ba siya?

In celebration of De La Salle Lipas 54th foundation anniversary, Red Lantern Productions awed
Lasallians with Ricky Lees Kabesang Tales: Isang Rap en Rol Musical at Sentrum, Feb. 14.

Written by Ricky Lee and directed by Alejandro Bong Ramos, the musical play mirrored the life
of Telesforo Juan De Dios, popularly known as Kabesang Tales, a character in Dr. Jose Rizals El
Filibusterismo.

Starred by Dio Marco, the play retold the happenings on how Kabesang Tales evolved from a
farmer and a father to a Matang Lawin, a bandit that kills and fights for the oppressed.

Lines were sung, rapped, and also delivered as if it were a fliptop battle, stirring applause from
the crowd.

Among the parts of the play which enticed the crowd was the scene where Basilio gave a gift to
his love interest, Juli, and sang her a song.

Meanwhile, Tano, portrayed by Kevin Posadas, was also crowd favorite.

The play began with an interpretative dance and ended with a musical encore of the characters
that swooned the audience.

Ricky Lee announced the possibility of conducting a free writing workshop for Lasallians at the
end of the show.

C. REVIEWER'S NOTES

1) * Maria Clara (in the Noli Me Tangere) became a nun after she was not allowed to marry Ibarra.
She gave a locket to a leper who later gave it to Basilio after he treated the leper. Basilio, in turn,
offered the locket to his sweetheart, Juli (Juliana).

2) Kabesang Tales because of his dedication he earned a position of being the Kabesa of their
barangay. Even though he knew that fighting against the friars, has a little chance of winning, he still
does not feel being afraid of them and instead he pushed himself to fought against them. I liked him
because he is a strong and brave person and does not want anybody to just stepped on him and do
nothing about it.

Basilio In the previous play, the one who acted as Basilio, besides having good looks and nice voice,
his character of being a sweet and loyal lover for Juli is what I liked the most.

3) Why did Cabesang Tales say that we are like the land and that we were unclothed when we
were born? He meant that we should not fear death because death comes to everyone. We should
also not fear poverty because we were born poor: without clothes, without anything.

"Iba tayo" Juli at Basilio

"Sa buhay na ito, dalawa lamang ang pagpipilian

lumaban o magpaapi" - KabesangTales

"Isipin mo na lang na kinain ang pera mo ng malaking buwaya" Tata Selo

1. Kapag natalo ako,ay hindi ko na kakailanganin ang mga anak"

-Kabesang Tales

4) government in favor of the friars this happened when Kabesang Tales after making the land
prosperous through his own hardwork, the friars put huge tax or increasing taxes in which Kabesang
Tales couldnt anymore afford to pay tax and in which it resulted to the land being surrendered in the
hands of the friars. And since the friars could not present any legal title for the land, Kabesang Tales
demanded in the court, but failed to do so because the court favoured the friars. In my perspective,
this is really unacceptable since, there is no justice here because the friars would not tax large
amount in the land, when it is not prosperous. The friars did not do anything to make the land
prosperous and in which it is them who takes more of the benefits in it rather than the one who really
suffer all the hardships.

When kabesang tales chose to spent the money to pay to the lawyers believing that the land would
fall again to his hands rather than using it to ransom for his son, Tano. Its kind of a negative
impression in it, the main purpose of Tales was because he feels like when he lose his land he has
nothing to give anything for his children in order to live. Although in the part of Tano, it may seem
difficult and painful, since he may feel like his father chose a material aspect rather than chose his
own son.

5) if I were to write the ending, I would not let Kabesang Tales die, and rather have a happy ending
wherein, he and his son, Tano will be together again, and in which both of them together with the
tulisans would fight against the civil guards and in which no one can ever fight against them since
both of them are somehow an experienced gun shooter.
Endaya, Rona Athena Veronica A.

P3B

Before the play has started, Kabesang Tales is somewhat familiar to me

because as I remember, this has been discussed to us when we were in high school
which was either in Noli Me Tangere or in El Filibusterismo. But he does not have the
main role in those subjects which makes me kind of curious, inter
