CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
- 12 OCT Columbus day
- The native Americans are now living in reservations. In the 20 th century,
there was an idea of boosting the economics of these reservations, so they
brought the casinos.
- Some say that Columbus didnt actually `discover` America, because the
place had already been visited by many populations and that it was
already populated.
- To celebrate Columbus day, Im gonna barge into a white guys house
and tell him I discovered him.
- He wrote a diary, but it got lost and Bartolome de Las Casas rewrote it
from pieces, but the final document is unreliable, abstract. Columbus
wanted to make himself memorable and he makes up stories about weird
creatures that he discovers on the island: mermaids, people with dogs
heads, there were images circulating back then with freaks from the
New World.
- He travelled mostly throught the Atlantic Ocean, to Central America,
where his people killed most of the population there.
Junot Diaz The Brief Wondorous Life of Oscar Wao
- Junot Diaz writes about a curse of Columbus. He calls it the Curse and the
Doom of the New World and ha says it has been brought by Columbus/the
Admiral.
- There were exchanges of products between the Old World and the New
World. The Old World bought along horses, domestic animals, cotton and
the New World gave them spices, gold, tobacco and exotic fruits and
plants.
- The English tried to have a permanent colony at first, but they failed
miserably.
- Powhatan Confederacy Jamestown colony. In 1607, the English colony
lands in Virginia. Cpt. John Smith got himself in jail while on the ship. After
a while he became the leader of the colony. He writes a story he didnt get
very well, he says that Pocahontas father kidnapped him and tried to
fatten him up in order to eat him (LIE !!!). he says that they try to cut of
his head, but Pocahontas risks her own life to save him. In reality, they just
tried to welcome him into the tribe, like a baptize process. Pocahontas
married the biggest tobacco magnat during that time, but she died very
young of lung problems, because she was brought along in the Old World
and shown of as an exibit.
- stereotype about the Native Americans: the noble savages (people that
are pure hearted, but they are stupid, they cannot become intelligent
because of their nature).
- Private inverstors that made voyages in the New World: 1. COMPANY
(private inverstors), 2.ROYAL COLONY , 3.PROPRIETARY COLONY (one
single investor/owner).
- After Cpt. John Smith, came Sir Thomas Gates, who was guilty of genocide.
Smith had taught his men not to kill the savages, but Gates made
Smiths ideas collapse.
- Smith writes The General history of Virginia and A Description of New
England (1616). This last one was written in the form of a letter
addressed to the people with money (lords, knights and gentlemen) and
he says that only if you work on this land, you will become prosperous and
if you have religious motivation and if you labour, you will become rich.
He encourages parents to send thier children to America, because this is
the only way they will stop being idle and grow prosperous, or else they
will become the masters of the house and ask them for their money. He
sees America as abounding (cornul abundenei).
- Indentured servants = English people who can go to America as temporary
slaves. A sponsor would pay your passage and you had to work for that
person, you were not allowed to get married for 7 years. After that, you
would get a piece of land for yourself and some money. Convicts were also
sent to America, so were the poor.
