Doctrine Paper-Unit 8

As Christian we often come across questions about angels, demons, and Satan. Are we

always surrounded by angels or our so called guardian angels? If so, are we then always

surrounded by demons? Do they roam the earth among us? In today's society, we all grew up

learning that Angels were these beautiful people with wings and were there to help us and guide

us in life and demons were little red creatures with horns and a pitchfork. But with this, questions

also come up about witchcraft, spiritual beings and so on.

In the bible it talks about demons being able to possess a body and take control over it

(Matthew 8:28-34) which is why I believe demonic possession is possible. Today, many people

have been fascinated or obsessed with horror movies. Many of these movies are about

possessions and demonic activity and some are known to be based on a true story. Because of the

evidence and reports of such events, I believe that demon possession is still possible today, like it

was in biblical times. I believe that all people are targets for demonic possession but there is a

way around it and I believe it is divine intervention. In Revelation 9 it talks about people having

the seal of God, and I believe that is what keeps us safe. God claims us as his, and we cannot be

broken with Gods hand protecting us.

Like angels, demons have to have some sort of commander. Their commander, Satan,

is a fallen angel of God who rebelled against him. In the bible Satan is referred to as, the prince

of demons, (Matthew 12:24) the god of this age, (2 Corinthians 4:4) and the ruler of the

world. 1 Peter 5:8 claims that we need to keep our eyes open because Satan roams like a lion,

looking for someone to devour. Which to me proves that Satan does roam the earth looking for

people to tempt. It also says in Job that Satan was roaming the earth before coming before the

Lord. But because he is not omnipresent, he has demons doing work for him as well. Satan only

appears a few times in the Bible, tempting people like Jesus and Job. But he was unsuccessful in

doing so each time.

In the Navajo culture, we are often taught about skin walkers, which is a type of Navajo

witch. We also learn about medicine men who do good work to help and serve their people. Both

skin walkers and medicine men have some type of powers, as of where they get the power Im

not to sure. But I believe that skin walkers get their powers from the devil, or some other source

of evil. Medicine men on the other hand, I believe they get their powers from a better, stronger

force, maybe even God himself since they use their powers for good. I cannot fully answer this

because I am not traditional.

Angels are Gods servants, doing his work in spreading his word and guiding us along in

our everyday life. (Hebrews 1:14) Like demons, Angels aren't mentioned much in the Bible. But,

we do know the names of only a few of them, Gabriel and Michael. Gabriel was God's

messenger delivering good news to people. Michael seemed to be Gods warrior who kept watch

over people in battle. Although Angels are Gods servants, they are not omnipresent or

omniscient, they are just used to help God. However, guardian angels are important as well. The

Bible brushes over guardian angels talking about angels protecting, guiding, and providing for

us, but we are not assigned a guardian angel to look over us day and night. In the New

Testament, the angel Michael was sent to look over Israel, but there is nothing that states we are

assigned individual angels to watch over us.

I personally do not see a need for guardian angels anyways because we have an almighty,

omnipresent, and omniscient God who can take care of us himself. But they are his active

believers who stay faithful to him, and are willing to help when needed. They are also a sign of

Gods faith and never ending love; because we know that he is looking out for us and we do not

have to worry about a thing. Even with Satan and his demons roaming the earth, they cannot

touch us without Gods permission. God will not do anything to hurt us, because we are his

children and he loves us greatly.
