Jane's Ammunition Handbook

M572 PD fuze
Record Info Development

Publication: The M572 Point-Detonating (PD) fuze may be regarded as a more robust version of the M557 PD fuze, designed specifically to withstand high
Jane's Ammunition Handbook acceleration loads. The M572 was originally developed for use only with the high charges used with the 175 mm M113 cannon mounted on the M107 self
Section: -propelled long-range gun. Its use has been extended to the longer-barrelled (39 and 45 calibre) pieces such as the 155 mm FH-70, the GH-45 series
FUZES - ARTILLERY FUZES and similar weapons. M572 PD fuzes have also been produced in former Eastern-bloc nations and are still offered by MKEK of Turkey.
Country:
United States (equipment manufacturer) The M572 PD does have limitations. It is not watertight and is not drop safe. Prematures have occurred when the weapon is fired at high muzzle

Last posted: velocities from longer-barrelled weapons. These factors led the South African company Naschem, a division of Rheinmetall Denel (Pty) Ltd, to develop
2012-07-31 the essentially similar, but upgraded M841 PD fuze with some additional components. These components can be retrofitted to existing M572 PD fuzes.
The M841 PD can be used with projectiles fitted with Base-Bleed (BB) units and weighs 770 g.

Another 'non-American' example of the M572 PD is the FMK 27 PD, produced by the Direccin General de Fabricaciones Militares (FM) of Argentina.

In 1995, the US transferred 6,000 M572 fuzes, with a value of USD48,000, from its stockpile to Bahrain as grant aid.

Contents Description
Development The main difference between the M572 PD and the M557 is that the ogive cavity of the M572 PD, left empty on the M557, is filled with approximately 71 g of epoxy
Description resin. This provides a general stiffening for the entire fuze structure, so that it can withstand increased acceleration forces.

Interchangeability
As with the M557, the M572 PD fuze is a selective Super-Quick (SQ) or 0.05 second delay impact fuze. The function is selected by turning a setting sleeve; there is
Specifications only one time-delay setting.
Contractor
The M572 PD fuze consists of the M48A3 fuze and the M125A1 booster; the essentially similar M572C1 uses the M125C1 booster, which has a setback pin for
Equivalent rounds added handling and transport safety.

The fuze-head assembly contains a firing pin, held in position by a firing-pin support, preventing the initiation of the M24 detonator until actual impact. The fuze
Contractor
body contains an M1 delay plunger assembly and an interrupter assembly, with a setting sleeve connected to the external setting sleeve for SQ or delay
India functioning. The delay element includes an M2 firing-pin and delay element, the latter including an M24 primer, a black-powder delay charge and an M7 relay. The
Contractor head assembly and the body are attached by a flash tube, which also positions the fuze windshield, or ogive. The ogive is a thin-walled steel stamping and is filled

South Africa internally with epoxy resin.

Contractor The M125A1 booster body is brass, with standard NATO external threads. An aluminium cup containing a 22 g tetryl booster pellet, with a lead element, is
Spain threaded to the body.

On firing, the resultant centrifugal forces retract detents, which hold an eccentric rotor in the M125A1 booster in the unarmed position. The rotor turns against a
Turkey gear-train mechanism, which controls the turning speed of the rotor until it reaches the armed position. Once in this position, the rotor is locked in place by a spring-
Contractor armed pin, so that the M17 detonator in the rotor is aligned with the fuze's detonation train. The same centrifugal forces also arm the M1 delay plunger. If, however,
the fuze is set to the delay position, the flash-tube interrupter will not retract, so that any flash from the SQ function element will not be able to reach the booster's
explosive train.

When the fuze is initiated on contact with a target, the firing pin is driven into the M24 detonator. This creates a flash through to the M17 detonator to activate the lead element of the booster pellet. If
the fuze is on the delay setting, the flash tube is blocked, so that the M17 detonator is activated via the delay element.

The booster delay mechanism provides an arming distance of approximately 61 m, but this distance will depend on the weapon involved.

It is possible for the M572 PD to function prematurely when fired in heavy-rainfall conditions.
