Welcome to WFDY Magazine - World Youth!
Editorial
WORLD YOUTH is back! This is the
good news that WFDY likes to send
for all its member and friendly
organizations as one more element
in the strengthening of WFDY, its
bodies and its organized action.
WORLD YOUTH issue for the year of
2010 focuses on the current issues
that are facing the youth of the
world today. It also has a special
coverage about the WFDY solidarity
brigades to the Democratic
Republic of Korea. Together with
the 2nd IPM, the solidarity events
will express more international
solidarity for the Korean youth
towards their just rights in
independent, unified and sovereign
country.
This year is the year of the festival,
and this is a very important
moment in the life of WFDY and the
life of the anti-imperialist youth.
The festival is already decided in
South Africa in December 13-21,
2010 and the process of
preparation is already in its middle
with this second IPM being held in
Korea. This issue of WORLD YOUTH
will give more info about the
preparations, what was done and

We present to you here reports and
analysis about the situation in
Palestine especially after the last
aggression against Gaza in the
beginning of 2009. We also have
coverage about Western Sahara
with the long struggles of its people
for the right of self-determination.
In Latin America the new US
military bases in Columbia are the
subject of interest and worry for us
for their role in destabilizing the
region there. WORLD YOUTH also
presents the Cyprus problem with
the current efforts played by the
new Cypriot president, government
and youth for the reunification of
the island. In Asia, the
developments in the Korean
peninsula are the most worrying for
us especially with continuous
provocations from the USA and the
right wing government in the south
of the country that play a negative
role and put obstacles against
solving the Korean problem to
continue their pressures and
blockade against DPRK. As the
thematic campaign against the

imperialist military bases is
concluded this year after many
successful events around the world,
we present to you the outcomes of
this campaign especially its big
summer event that was held in
Cuba in August of 2009. Within the
same context, it is very important
to refocus the attention of the
sources and supporters of terrorism
in the world, which are the
imperialist countries occupying
other nations and threatening,
blockading and sanctioning others.
This issue will also present more
information about WFDY meetings
and events for the past year and
also a special file about the military
bases around the world as they
present an immediate and
continuous threat for world peace
today and in the future.
We hope that the content will
reflect the amount of action that
was done in the past year, and that
WFDY will keep the continuity of
WORLD YOUTH for the following
years and that the youth of the
world will find new and interesting
information for them in our
magazine.

Never again fascism, never again war!
17th World Festival of the
Let’s defeat imperialism, Youth and Students
for a world of peace, solidarity and social transformation!
As part of the Festivals' Movement
tradition, took place in Caracas –
Venezuela (host of the 16th WFYS)
the 1st International Preparatory
Meeting (IPM) of the 17th World
Festival of Youth and Students as
well as the traditional Handover
Flag Ceremony of the Festivals to
the next host.
After a vivid debate and unanimous
decision, the IPM attended by 34
organizations from 27 different
countries of the 5 regions of the
World decided that the next WFYS
will take place in South Africa, in
December 13 -21 of 2010, under
the slogan “Let's defeat
imperialism, for a world of peace,
solidarity and social
transformation!”. This decision to
organize the Festival in South Africa
(the first ever to be organized in
sub-Saharan Africa!) reflects the
international solidarity towards the
progressive and anti-imperialist
youth of South Africa that, in the
past as today, is showing the world
to be building a country of justice,
solidarity and friendship, with the
economy oriented in favor of the
interests of the people and ever
deeper relations of friendship
among all those who live in the
country, disregard their skin color,
religion or ethnic origin.
The IPM decided also on an appeal
to be sent to all the youth of the
world (check the following pages)
and on the main guidelines of the
17th WFYS program. As part of the
patrimony of the WFYS movement,
the decision was very clear to build
a very deep anti-imperialist
program for the 17th WFYS
following the recent extremely
positive experience of the Festival
in Venezuela, being in this IPM
approved the main guidelines that
will take to a decision on the 2nd
IPM and 3rd IPM's.
Finally this IPM decided on an
ambitious preparatory process of
the Festival with international and
regional events (the 2nd IPM will be
in DPRK and the 3rd in Cyprus), as
part of the big wave of solidarity
and anti-imperialist awareness and
struggle that will have its highest
moment in South Africa, during the
days of the WFYS.
As for the Handover Flag Ceremony,
it was another expression of the
intense and vibrant echo that the
Festival's Movement still produces
in the Venezuelan youth. The
participation of Venezuelan
youngsters was massive and the
Municipal Theatre Hall of Caracas
was small for several thousands of
young people who rallied to attend
this event.
Throughout the afternoon,
different artists from Venezuela and
South Africa expressed through

music and theatre the anti-
imperialist commitment of the
youth of the world to the will to
build a world of lasting peace,
solidarity and social transformation.
The artist performances were
followed by the speeches of the
General Secretary of the
Communist Youth of Venezuela and
President of the National
Preparatory Committee of
Venezuela, Hector Rodriguez, of the
President of WFDY, Tiago Vieira, of
the President of the ANC Youth
League, Julius Malema, and of the
vice-president of Venezuela, Elías
Jaua - on behalf of comrade
President Hugo Chavez.
From all the intense speeches, we
highlight the words of comrade
Malema stating the honor that the
South African youth had to host the
biggest and most significant event
of the anti-imperialist youth of the
world in their country.
In the end of these days, all
participants returned to their
countries sure that this will be
another great Festival and that its
success depends only on the work
and struggle of all organizations, so
that it means another step towards
the final victory against
imperialism.

Appeal for the 17th WFYS
Come to South Africa from December 13 to 21, 2010!
Y outh has always been a vital
force in the development of
societies. With natural creativity,
will of change, transformation and
strength, the struggle of youth for
freedom, peace and social
transformation, for the right to
education, employment,
democratic rights and peace has
always had a significant role in the
general struggle for a fair and
peaceful world. This is
demonstrated by the past, but also
by the present where big
demonstrations of students, of
young workers and of youngsters in
general are a vanguard of
resistance against exploitation,
withdraw of rights, imperialist
plunder of resources, racism, sexual
discrimination, colonialism, fascism,
military interventions and war, and
for the survival of the Human
being. We call upon the youth to
continue these struggles.

Solidarity towards Western Sahara
For the freedom of the last colony in Africa!
Despite its listing since 1963 in a list
of non autonomous territories, the
study of its situation every year
both by the fourth commission of
the decolonisation of the general
assembly of the united nations and
the various texts and resolutions
adopted by the organization and
the engagement and the presence
in the terrain of the United Nations
Mission for the referendum in
Western Sahara known as
MINURSO, the last territory in
Africa is still under foreign
occupation, Western Sahara is a
country whose people are waiting
to decide freely about their fate.
After the agreements signed on
August 30 1988 by the Polisario
front and Morocco known as the
“conjoint proposals” under the
auspices of Organisation of African
Union and the United Nations; this
later took the initiative in order to
find a peaceful solution to this
conflict through referendum of self
determination which might enable
the Sahrawi people to choose freely
their fate. The two parties to the
conflict; the Polisario Front and
Morocco have accepted the
settlement plan , a document
which stipulated a cease fire
starting from September 6, 1991
and the organization of a
referendum. For that purpose the
UN Security Council decided to
create the United Nations mission
for the organization of the
referendum in Western Sahara

US military bases keep spreading
The new seven military bases in Colombia are a strong attack!
A Threat to Peace, militarism is
growing especially the United
States, with its expansionist policy.
The continuing U.S. military
expansionism in the world keeps
growing, despite the economic
crisis affecting the country. Because
military domination is also a way to
pressure, controlling, interfering,
blackmailing and threatening to
defend the policy of U.S. economic
interests' defense as much as
possible. According to the
Pentagon's inventory, it contains
the rule of U.S. military installations
in 40 countries, with a display of
over 190 thousand soldiers in 46
countries and territories. The most
important lies in that such
deployment is unnecessary for the
genuine defense of the U.S., in
addition to cause friction with
other countries and its overall
maintenance wasteful (250 billion
dollars per year), its sole purpose is
to provide U.S. hegemony, i.e. its
control or dominion over the
largest possible number of
countries on the planet.

History and facts important for our struggle
The end of cold war could not scale
down the military bases and
installations. The end of balance of
power has invited even the higher
level of global military expenditure,
new military technology and search
of new bases and installation along
with doctrine of preemptive war
and occupation. The US, along with
its continued imperialist policies
has been leading this process,
unchecked and unmated.
The US military expenditure is even
higher than the cold war time, even
not calculating the money spending
for war and occupation in Iraq and

promises. The US has still 41.5% of
global share of military expenditure
with 607 billion USD, China 5.8%,
France 4.5%, the U.K. 4.5% and
Russia 4%.
This military expenditure has scaled

hardware installations. In Latin
America, an infamous Guantanamo
military base with international

Long live the Cuban Revolution!
WFDY campaign of solidarity towards the Korean youth
As you see throughout the next
pages, 2010 is the year of several
round dates related to Korea. All
together, the existing situation of
the country being split into two, the
round dates that come together
this year and, particularly, the
growing imperialist pressure
against DPRK and the whole Korean
people, WFDY decided to take
forward a solidarity campaign for
the reunification of Korea.
For those who might not know,
here we provide some historical
posters of WFDY that, alongside
with countless statements,
declarations and other materials,
state by themselves that the
solidarity with the Korean people is
a part of the history of WFDY since
its foundation time.
The highest point of this solidarity
was in 1989, when the Democratic
Peoples' Republic of Korea hosted
the first (and until now only) World
Festival of the Youth and Students.
This was when thousands of people
from all over the world came to
state their support to the cause of
reunifying the peninsula. From all
delegates that attended the
Festival, the most important were
surely those coming from the South
of Korea, breaking the siege that
Korea is one!

As you can read in the next pages,
in texts written by our Korean
comrades, the history of Korea has
been a long history of war and
menace against its people. Unlike
what imperialism likes to teach
with its revised history taught in
schools and seen on TV, the people
of Korea as suffered from the
crimes of imperialism (first Japan,
then USA) and its struggle became
much more than an option, but in
truth an essential need for the
survival and freedom – which is still
to be totally achieved when the
Peninsula can finally be reunified.
Beyond the lies and mystifications
created by imperialism, the will of
the Korean people and the project
presented by DPRK to reunify the
whole Korea peninsula is
remarkable and leaves no room for
any sort of honest doubt.
Therefore, it is clear that only
through lies and provocations on
daily bases it is possible for
imperialism to prevent this
reunification to take place.

the Korean peninsula are a clear
sign of how it is imperialism the

clear this when we see that 10
years ago it was possible to sign a
common declaration towards
reunification, but soon after the

has not been implemented.
In this sense, we can say that the
struggle of peace and against
imperialism walks side by side with
the struggle of the Korean people
and youth – for the reunification of
their country and the freedom to
decide their future in peace and
free of interferences. Therefore,
WFDY has collectively decided in its
General Council Meeting to
dedicate a big share of its attention
and activity to the Korean
reunification, taking up again the
historical slogan “Korea is one” as
the most powerful sentence to
express the roots and prospects of
our solidarity. Together with other
elements, a visit to Korea will also
be made by dozens of delegates of
all the world to celebrate in
Pyongyang the 10th Anniversary of
the North-South Declaration for the
Reunification.

The fight against Japan and USA imperialism!
Imperialism cannot survive even a
moment without aggression and
plunder. They are the enemy of
entire humanity who can be
defeated only through death-
defying fight against them.The
proof is the history of Korea's
struggle against Japanese and US
imperialists.
On November 17, 1905 Japanese
imperialists who had stretched
their tentacle of aggression to
Korea for hundreds of years since
the invasion of Korea by Japanese
“pirates”, called in tens of
thousands of aggressive troops to
encircle the Korean Royal Palace
and, under threat and blackmail,
fabricated the “Ulsa 5-Point Treaty”
which was illegal and invalid as it
bore neither the royal signature nor
the royal seal. Then, in August
1910, Japanese imperialists
concocted the “Korea-Japan
Annexation Treaty”, under which
they turned the whole of Korea into
their colony.
Japanese imperialists, once they
had occupied Korea by force of
arms, netted its whole territory
with repressive system and
mercilessly cracked down upon the
anti-Japanese righteous fighters
and other Korean people who had
turned out in the struggle for
national independence. On the
other hand, they forcibly drafted
millions of young Koreans for their
aggressive war and slave labour,
and humiliated more than 200 000
Korean women as “comfort
women” for the Japanese imperial
army. In addition, they
indiscriminately shipped away from
Korea a huge amount of cultural
relics and natural resources.
At this critical juncture, the great
leader of the Korean people Kim Il
Sung declared war against Japanese
imperialists under the slogan “Arms
for Arms!”, encouraged all Korean
people to the sacred struggle
against the barbarous Japanese
imperialists and dealt a heavy blow

to them by leading one battle after
another to victory with unexcelled
strategies and tactics.With the
defeat of fascist Germany, and
driven to a tight corner by the
valiant struggle of the Korean
People's Revolutionary Army,
Japanese imperialists amassed a
huge aggressive armed forces in
Korea in a desperate attempt to
“retain Korea”.
On August 9, 1945, under the great
leader Kim Il Sung's order of final
all-out attack, the KPRA units
charged like surging waves to
annihilate the Japanese aggression
army. In response to it, the Korean
people in the homeland rose up in
the armed revolts and destroyed
the Japanese establishments in
Korea.Under the outstanding
leadership of the great leader Kim Il
Sung the 20-year-long anti-
Japanese war was crowned with
brilliant victory, and at last on
August 15, 1945 Korea was freed
from the fetters of 40-odd-year-
long Japanese colonial rule.
The history of Korea's struggle
against Japanese imperialists is
coincided with that against US
imperialists.

July 1866 when the US pirate ship
“General Sherman” sailed deep into
the territorial waters of Korea.
Having forced upon the Korean
feudal government the humiliating
“Korea-US Treaty”, the US
imperialists spread religion and
American way of life across Korea,
spied on its internal affairs, shipped
away many Koreans as slaves,
robbed Korea of its valuable
minerals and agricultural products,
and actively supported Japan's
invasion of Korea.
In a vicious long-harboured attempt
to turn Korean into a bridgehead
for their invasion of the Asian
continent and a logistic base, the
US imperialists landed on Korea
south of the 38th Parallel taking
advantage of Japan's defeat in the
World War II. There, they destroyed
over 130 democratic political
parties and social organizations by
force of arms and imposed their
colonial rule upon south Korea.
In utter defiance of the will of the
Korean people and the resolution
of the 3-party ministerial meeting
in Moscow on the establishment of
a unified democratic government in
Korea, the US imperialists set up
the separate puppet south Korean
government and shipped in their
huge aggressive forces in frantic
preparation for war against the

northern half of Korea.
The US imperialists appropriated a
colossal amount of fund to
reinforce the south Korean puppet
army and equip it with American
weapons, and then, made ceaseless
armed provocations against the
north along the 38th Parallel line to
build up its “real combat ability”.
On the other hand, they mapped
out a detailed war plan against the
north, which included even the
false reporting to hide their ulterior
intention of aggression. Then, on
June 25, 1950 they eventually
broke out a criminal war of
aggression.
Under the order issued by the great
leader Kim Il Sung to make an
immediate counter-attack to the
reckless aggression of the US
imperialists, the Korean People's
Army valiantly advanced southward
to liberate Seoul within 3 days of
the war, and over 90 % of the
territory and 92 % of the
population of southern half of
Korea within less than 2 months.
Confounded by the successive
defeat, US imperialists misused the
United Nations to involve the
troops of 15 vassal states in the
Korean War, and hurled in
additional hundreds-of-thousands-
strong forces and huge amount of
war hardware. Under the seasoned
leadership of the General Kim Il
Sung, however, the Korean People's
Army dealt a heavy blow to the US
imperialists, and at last on July 27,
1953 won a great victory in the
Fatherland Liberation War.
In the 3-year Korean War, US
imperialists threw in millions-strong
forces, but suffered a great loss:
over 1 567 000 troops were killed,
wounded or captured alive (400
000 were Americans); about 120
000 airplanes were shot down; and
564 warships were sunk or
destroyed. Consequently, the myth
of US being the “strongest” in the
world was shattered to
smithereens.
After the war, instead of learning
due lessons from it, US imperialists
made desperate attempts to
perpetuate the division of Korea
and were hell-bent in war moves
against the DPRK.
US imperialists formed the
tripartite military alliance with
south Korea and Japan, the sworn
enemy of the Korean people and
systematically shipped in
sophisticated war hardware and
mass destruction weapons. Having
installed scores of military bases
and deployed over 1 000 nuclear
weapons in south Korea, US
imperialists have staged war games
against the DPRK, for example, they
annually escalated the “Team
Spirit” joint military exercises from
1976. Even today, 60 years after the
Korean War, US imperialists are
frantically staging DPRK-targeted
“Ulji Focus Lens”, “Key Resolve” and
“Foal Eagle” joint military exercises,
along with intensive espionage.
Just as a mad dog must be clubbed
to death so the Korean People's
Army has responded to the US hard
line with much harder line: in
January 1967 south Korean puppet
navy patrol ship No.56 trespassed
into the territorial waters of the
DPRK only to be sunk into the sea;
in January 1968 the US spy ship
“Pueblo” was captured, in April
1969 the large reconnaissance
plane “EC-121” was shot down; and
in December 1994 the armed
helicopter “OH-58A/C” was shot
down.
Under the Songun leadership of the
great leader Kim Jong Il, the Korean
people and the People's Army are
now fighting valiantly for peace on
the Korean peninsula and in other
parts of the world at the outpost of
anti-Japanese, anti-US struggle.

Over the past 60 years, in order to convened a joint conference of

Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) put
forward reasonable proposals and
ways of reunification at each stage
of development of the situation
and has made all efforts to realize
them.
In the early period when Korea was
plunged into a crisis of territorial
partition and national division due
to the occupation of south Korea by
the US imperialists and their
aggressive policy, WPK advanced
the proposal to form a democratic
national united front and set up a
unified central government on its
basis and, in its effort to realize it,
representatives of the political
parties and social organizations of
the north and south of Korea.
The north-south joint conference,
which was aimed at preventing the
division of the country and paving
the way towards reunification,
drastically intensified the desire of
all the Korean people for a
reunified fatherland and frustrated
the plot of the US imperialists and
south Korean puppets to hold a
“separate election” and set up a
“separate government” in south
Korea.

In the 1970s the cornerstone of
national reunification was created
when President Kim Il Sung
advanced the Three Principles of
National Reunification, namely,
independence, peaceful
reunification and great national
unity and, in 1972, the July 4 Joint
Statement was published to
establish the three principles as the
common reunification program of
the nation, thus opening up a
bright prospect of national
reunification. The five-point policy
for national reunification, which
was set forth by President Kim Il
Sung on June 23, 1973, dealt a
heavy blow to the so-called “special
statement” issued by the south
Korean puppet clique in which they
openly declared their moves to
create “two Koreas” as their policy,
and served as programmatic
guideline to prevent permanent
division of the country and
expedite the national reunification.
Moreover, the proposal of founding
the Democratic Federal Republic of
Koryo (DFRK), which was advanced
by President Kim Il Sung on October
10,1980, indicated the most fair
and reasonable way towards
national reunification in view of the
specific reality of our country
where the nation has been divided
into north and south for a long time
with different ideologies and
systems and the national identity of
the Korean people who have been
living as a homogeneous nation
throughout long history.
In November, 1980, the joint
conference of the political parties
and social organizations of the
DPRK discussed the proposal to
form a preparatory committee for
founding the DFRK which would
include representatives from all
walks of life in the north, south and
abroad and sent letters conveying
the proposal to political and public
figures in south Korea and abroad;
in August of the following year, the
67th meeting of the Democratic
Front for National Reunification
proposed convening a conference
to promote national reunification
to be attended by representatives
of the political parties and
organizations in the north and
south as well as overseas
compatriots. All these were a
manifestation of the sincere efforts
made by WPK to realize the
proposal of founding the DFRK

energetic struggle and sincere
efforts of the WPK, the Pan-
national Conference for National
Reunification was held on a regular
basis from 1990 and the Pan-

the north and south, and the
Agreement on Reconciliation, Non-
aggression, Cooperation and
Exchange between the north and
south and the Joint Declaration on
Denuclearization of the Korean
Peninsula were adopted and came
into force.
In April, 1993, President Kim Il Sung
put forward the Ten-point Program
of the great unity of the whole

principles and ways of great
national unity with the final goal of
founding a unified state.
On August 4, 1997, in his work “Let
us implement thoroughly the
instruction of the great leader
Comrade Kim Il Sung on national
reunification,” the great leader
Comrade Kim Jong Il defined the
Three Charters for national
reunification, which consist of the
Three Principles of National
Reunification, the Ten-point
Program of the great unity of the
whole nation and the proposal of
founding the DFRK. The three
charters are the guiding line which
Korean nation should hold fast to
and embody in accomplishing the
cause of national reunification.
In 2000, after 55 years of national
division, at a historic juncture
between two centuries, inter-
Korean summit was held in
Pyongyang and the June 15 North-
South Joint Declaration was
adopted. It was an epoch-making
event which served as the occasion
for a radical turn in realizing the
cause of independent reunification
of all Korean compatriots.
The North-South Joint Declaration,
which excited the whole nation and
national independence that has
clarified the way to accomplish
national reunification by the
nation's own force; a declaration of
peace that has brought about warm
air of reunification in this land
where chilly wind of cold war and
confrontation was sweeping; and a
declaration of great national unity
that has enabled cooperation and
unity through national
collaboration.
All the Korean people are
continuing to advance bravely
towards independent reunification
under the uplifted banner of the
June 15 Joint Declaration and the
ideal of “By Korean nation itself.”

In solidarity with Palestine!
The latest developments of the struggle in Palestine
The Palestinian situation has
witnessed many developments
since the last Israeli aggression
against Gaza in the end of 2008-
beginning of 2009. That war which
was condemned by many
international investigation reports
led to the death of more than 1300
Palestinians most of which were
civilians. Israel used many
prohibited weapons like weapons
with white phosphorous that lead
to large scale burns in the bodies of
the victims.
After that war, Israel continued its
blockade which prevents all forms
of supplies from Gaza including
food and medicine, except in very
small amounts. At the same time,
the Egyptian regime continues its
role in the blockade against the
Gazan people, with Egypt being the
other bordering country of the
Gaza strip. Egypt first enforced a
blockade on the goods entering
Gaza, but the Palestinian were able
to overpass this move by bravely
building tens of underground
tunnels allowing them to have
access to the Egyptian villages on
the other side to get their needs of
food and medicine and all other
needed materials. Egypt then
decided to strengthen its blockade
and started, after the advice of the
CIA and the Israeli forces, to build
an underground wall that goes 30
meters below the surface to cut all
tunnels built by the Palestinians
there. This wall of shame is being
built now with funding from USA
and contracting by US companies.
Egypt and Israel think that this will
force the people of Gaza to
surrender to their conditions of
stopping the resistance and

complying to the Israeli policies of
occupation and exploitation.
However, the Palestinian people
will surpass this new measure and
the will of the resistance will always
create conditions that allow the
continuation of the armed struggle
until the liberation of the
Palestinian lands and establishing
an Independent viable Palestinian
state with Jerusalem as its capital.
In the West Bank, Israel also
continues its oppressive measures
with more than 700 checkpoints
preventing the Palestinian from
moving freely in their own land and
cutting the villages from each other.
The wall of shame, wall of
apartheid built by Israel cut the
West Bank into pieces and slices
under the pretexts of protecting
the settlements and the Israeli
villages. More settlements are
being built, and old settlements are
expanded, thus violating all

international laws and agreements
even those agreements that are
biased for Israel like the Oslo peace
agreement.
More than 11000 detainees remain
in Israeli prisons including tens of
Palestinian parliament members,
leaders of Palestinian organizations
and leaders of Intifada. The General
Secretary of PFLP, the Popular Front
for the Liberation of Palestine,
Ahmad Saadat remains under
detention despite all international
and local demands for his release.
Israel continues to ignore all
resolutions with full support from
USA that is always ready to block
any resolution condemning Israel in
the UN Security Council, and
supplies it with all its needs of
weapons that are used to kill the
Palestinian people as well as
Lebanese, Syrian and whoever they
think they need to eliminate!
In these circumstances, WFDY
launched several campaigns of
support with the Palestinian people
in the last period, including an
international visit of solidarity to
West Bank, a campaign of solidarity
with Ahmad Saadat the SG of PFLP
and statements of solidarity and
support at every important incident
concerning Palestine. WFDY will
continue its struggle, supporting the
Palestinian people and their fight for
liberation and independence and
the right of return, and the common
struggles together with all our
member organizations and anti-
imperialist youth and people around
the world will lead to the victory and
achievements of those rights.

For the reunification of Cyprus!
The newest developments on the Cyprus’ issue
President Christofias is handling the
Cyprus problem based on a coherent
strategy serving the goal of finding a
bizonal bicommunal federal solution
with political equality as set out by
the resolutions of the United
Nations; for a solution that will
liberate Cyprus from the occupation
and colonisation and restore the
human rights of our people; for a
solution with a united state with a
single sovereignty, a single
international personality and a single
citizenship; for a workable and viable
solution. The President of the
Republic is exhibiting at the
negotiations political will for a
solution of the Cyprus problem,
devotion to principles, and a
readiness for a mutually acceptable
compromise with the Turkish Cypriot
community. In the international
arena, he is utilising the international
and European factor, pursuing a
multifaceted foreign policy and
rejuvenating the relations the
Republic of Cyprus has with its
traditional friends and allies. The
credibility of President Christofias
among the international and
European field, is acknowledged
everywhere, as that leader who
genuinely desires and is working for a
solution of the Cyprus problem
within the framework also accepted
by the international community.
Our analysis is that, the election of
Mr. Eroglou as the leadership of the
Turkish Cypriot community
represents a negative development.
Mr. Eroglou expresses long held
positions that clash with the
resolutions of the United Nations,
counter the interests of the Cypriot
people as a whole and are outside
the framework of the agreed
framework for the talks. For the talks
to have the possibility of recording
further progress, they must continue
from the point they were interrupted
and based on the framework agreed
by the two communities. At the same
time we strongly believe that the
election of Mr. Eroglu imposes the
need to intensify the contacts and
coordination of actions with those
forces among our Turkish Cypriot
compatriots who genuinely desire a
solution of the Cyprus problem based
on bizonal bicommunal federation.
The United Nations, the permanent
members of the Security Council and
the European Union are duty bound
to exert their influence on the Turkish
side so that it can act within the
agreed framework. At the same time
it would be a disastrous mistake if as
a result of our own wrong actions -
such as withdrawing the proposals
we had submitted - we would give it
the opportunity to escape from this
framework and we would be blamed
for a possible deadlock.
Ankara must comprehend that the
perpetuation of the Cyprus problem
constitutes a problem for Turkey
itself and its ambitions. Our
estimation is that, Cyprus problem is
not among the priorities of the
Turkish government at this moment.
Moreover, the assessments that in
the clash between Erdogan and the
"deep state" the Cyprus problem is
being left to the management of the
armed forces.
A section of the political forces are
increasingly questioning and
opposing the solution of bizonal
bicommunal federation and with
their attacks are focused on the
President of the Republic and AKEL.
Instead of bizonal bicommunal
federation an ideal perfect solution is
projected, that no one has ever
specified how we would achieve this
solution. In the name of this "ideal"

solution in reality a culture of "non-
solution" and the acceptance of
partition is being cultivated. Patriotic
rhetoric, nationalist fervour,
unfeasible positions, and unrestrained
attacks on the President and AKEL
cannot be hide the fact that the
opponents of federation, are
promoting partition with all the
disastrous consequences for our
people as a whole.
The political hysteria regarding
specific proposals of the president at
the negotiations provokes
unnecessary tensions on the domestic
front, undermines the negotiating
position of President Christofias and
consolidates extreme right wing forces
who are exploiting the argument that
is developing in order to win over
consciousnesses. The proposals the
President has submitted are proposals
that overcome the negative heritage
of the Zurich agreements and the
Anan Plan. They are correct, unifying,
logical and democratic proposals that
can be mutually accepted.
In order to maintain any prospects for
a speedy solution of the Cyprus
problem, it is imperative to: remain
devoted to a bizonal bicommunal
federal solution; continue the
procedure of talks from the point they
were interrupted based on the agreed
framework; preserve the talks under
Cypriot ownership, far from
suffocating timetables and
arbitrations; utilise further the hard
work that has been done; continue to
utilise with seriousness, care and from
dogmatisms the international and
European factor; consolidate unity on
the domestic front based on principles
and far from petty party expediencies,
continue the policy of rapprochement,
the cultivation of a culture supporting
the solution and peaceful
cohabitation.

WFDY meetings and activities
Collective discussion - collective action!
In last one year the World
Federation of Democratic Youth has
organized many global, regional
meetings, solidarity campaigns and
has also attended many programs
invited by its member and friendly
organizations.
WFDY GC Meeting in Cuba in May 8
and 9, 2009 had positively
evaluated the WFDY activities for
the last year and designed the
program for a coming year. It
further finalized to organize the
summer event in Cuba. It also
deeply discussed the ways to revive
WFDY's financial difficulties and to
find the host of 17th festival in a
true spirit of festival movement.
In 2009, WFDY has concluded its
regional meetings in every five
regions.
WFDY organized summer activities
in Cuba in July 2009 with
participation of more than 15
organization from different
countries. It was accompanied with
solidarity mission with Cuba. Young
people worked with Cuban friends
in farms and carried out many
study visits.
During the summer event WFDY
received the delegation of ANC
Youth League from South Africa to
make initial efforts for the
readiness of festival hosting. Under
World Federation of Democratic Youth

seminars on the thematic issues
such as privatization and
commercialization of education,
youth right to employment, against

In November, WFDY organized its
Coordinating Council in Paris, in a
meeting with more than 30
organizations hosted by MJCF. This
was an important moment as it was
also the opportunity for the
celebration of WFDY 64th
Anniversary in the very same place
where its Headquarters was in the
first place.
WFDY GC Meeting in Lebanon took
place in less than a one year in
February 6 and 7, 2010 to decide
on the matter of the host of the
17th World Festival of Youth and
Students. This meeting decided on
the proposal of ANC Youth League,
South Africa to host it in December
2010. This meeting also decided
about the tentative dates about
flag handover ceremony and first
IPM, 2nd IPM and third IPM.
More than 44 Organizations had
attended this meeting. This
meeting also decided to give new
affiliation to youth organizations of
different regions.
We have successfully concluded 1st
IPM with attendance of more 34
organizations in Caracas. In the

Korea from 24 June to 1st July

Apart from these we are having
regional gathering and meetings.
Africa and Middle East has already
concluded its regional meetings
whereas Europe, Asia and Latin
America will have soon their
regional meetings in framework of
festival preparations.
Finally, the preparations have
started to form the National
Preparatory Committees in all
countries attending the next WFYS.
There is high expectations after the
143 countries attending the 16th
WFYS, so it is now time to be up to
the challenge and make this an even
bigger WFYS!

Summer 2009 - A great experience in many ways!
As is usual in Cuba, every year, the
Young Communist League of Cuba
received hundreds of young people
from around the world in order that
organize the International Solidarity
Brigade. In July 2009, this brigade
came to Cuba so that the young
people around the world would be
able to know more about Cuban
Revolution, the struggle again
imperialism and specially to learn
about the role that the young
people of Cuba have in order to
preserve and to build a new
system. The World Federation of

Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution - against imperialism!
The Cuban revolution has won too
many far-reaching achievements
that the right-wing forces cannot
let pass without attempting to
counter them with a dirty campaign
to once again present Cuba as a
country that tortures, murders or
leaves to die political prisoners. It
has occurred after the unfortunate
death of a common prisoner,
sentenced for more than 14 crimes,
which had begun a hunger strike
demanding his own kitchen and cell
phone in his cells, and despite the
care that he received in the best
hospitals in Cuba.
The imperialists cannot forgive to

special status, the Western press'
highly appreciated, in fact, no
group of opponents in Latin
