Chigi Vazosu

The Chigi vase is a Protocorinthian olpe, or pitcher, that is the name vase of the Chigi Painter.[1] It was found in an Etruscan
tomb at Monte Aguzzo, near Veio, on Prince Mario Chigis estate in 1881.[2] The vase has been variously assigned to the
middle and late protocorinthian periods and given a date of ca. 650-640 BC;[3] it is now in the National Etruscan Museum,
Villa Giulia, Rome (inv. No.22679). Some three-quarters of the vase is preserved. It was found amidst a large number of
potsherds of mixed provenance, including one bucchero vessel inscribed with five lines in two early Etruscan alphabets
announcing the ownership of Atianai, perhaps also the original owner of the Chigi vase.[4]
Museum: Rome, Villa Giulia
Size: 26.2cm.
Function: convivial. Jug (round mouth and bulbous body) for pouring.
Olpe
Technique: black-figure with an unusual use of polychromy
Style: miniature figures in friezes (Late Protocorinthian)
Decoration: dark-ground bands have florals and animals. Light-ground
have: warriors, with round hoplite shields, kept in step by pipes-player;
lion hunt and (under handle) Judgement of Paris with Paris and the
three goddesses named; hare hunt with dogs (lower frieze).
'Orientalising' flora and fauna.
Date: mid 7th c.
Analysis: unusual techniques of decoration, fine potting and painting,
and multi-theme figure decoration suggest a special piece. Hoplite
warfare was introduced at about the time this vase was made. Lion
hunts that were known to have taken place in the East are copied. The
hare hunt would have been common in Greece. Masculine themes
suggest the vase was for men. It was exported in antiquity to northern
Italy.
