ARTIFACT NAME: Modified Math Assignment

Rationale Statement:

The following document is an example of a modified mathematics assignment

that I prepared for one of my students. This document demonstrates my knowledge of

modifying assignments and curriculum to meet the needs of an individual student. My

student has been diagnosed with a specific learning disability in math and often requires

extra time to complete assignments. His assignment was originally a timed quiz

consisting of twenty questions, in order to make it appropriate for my student I decided to

turn the quiz into a partnered activity. Each pairing divided the work evenly and had the

period to discuss how they would complete the problems. I removed the time constraints

and allowed the students to work collaboratively rather than face the stresses that can

result from test taking.

My modification of this assignment demonstrates my ability to modify the

assignment while keeping the basic curriculum the same. Our role as special education

teachers it to provide students with an education that is appropriate to their ability level.

By modifying this assignment the student is receiving an education that is appropriate to

what he is able to do without limiting his ability to reach further.
