Maggie Kane Earth Science: Lesson Planning Template

2/2/17
Topic: Earthquake: scale Lesson # 11 in a series
Grade/ Grade Band: 9/10
drawings of 20 lessons
Brief Lesson Description: How to draw a scale drawing: elevation and plan views;
establishing a scale

Homework Given: Finish draft of scale drawing by tomorrow

Homework Collected: description of damage done on structures in Haiti from research

' Performance Expectation(s): Using Mathematics and computational thinking and

analysis
' Apply ratios, rates, percentages, and unit conversions in the context of complicated
measurement problems involving quantities with derived or compound units (such as
mg/mL, kg/m3, acre-feet, etc.).

Specific Learning Outcomes / Long Term Learning Targets:

I can design and draw a realistic model scaled up or down mathematically
I can use graph paper, ruler, engineering scale and protractor to make my drawing accurate

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge:
Geology of Haiti and Caribbean plate
History of Haiti and socioeconomic factors affecting the country
Earthquake energy, scales of measurement, types of building damage

LESSON PLAN 5-E Model
ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate
Questions:

(8-10 mns) Do Now: Think of an item in your life that you could draw. Do a quick sketch of
that item.
Is your drawing larger or smaller than the item? By how much? How could you find out
EXACTLY how much bigger or smaller it is? Discuss and share with your table group.

EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying

Questions:

(6-8 mins) Like sides, like angles activity: view various triangles and choose if they are to
scale or not (5 on walls A-E students write yes or no in SNB, then we will share out)

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

(10-12 mins) PowerPoint direct instruction on how to scale up and down. This covers direct
ratio in metric vs. in English units, scaling up and down, plan view, elevation view,
measurement and some practice problems.

Vocabulary: shown on slide 1 students write these words down

Scale
Ratio
Graphic representation
Plan view
Elevation
Section

Vocabulary review:
Did all the terms get clarified, discussed during the presentation and discussion? If not, do it
now.

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

(15 mins) Look at several architectural and engineering drawings, and several maps (place
on 5 tables, and have students rotate every 3-ish minutes) to find and discuss the scale.
Write notices and wonders in SNB

Use large tape measures to find the true dimension of one of the buildings (the last one the
group is looking at) to see the actual size. (3 tape measures so two groups will share)

(10 mins) Now get your graph paper out and establish the scale you want to use. Check
with 3 people, then check with me. How tall will your house be? Is that realistic? You will
continue this for homework bring in a solid draft tomorrow.

EVALUATE: I will go around during the 10 minutes of graph paper work and check on each
student that they have a scale.

Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion): If they do not have a scale

established, we will start there tomorrow, with 2-3 students showing their scale on the doc
camera. Students will then work on refining their drawings and adding dimensions, or they
will meet on the carpet with me for more work on scale drawings some more.

Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report): The scale drawing will be DUE at the
end of the NEXT class. It needs to show an accurate scale, straight lines showing care and
craftsmanship.

Elaborate Further / Reflect: Enrichment: if sts are ready, they may already be adding
in their engineering strategy.

Materials Needed:
Graph paper
Rulers and protractors
Engineer scales
Maps and drawings
Long tape measures (from wood shop)
EQ Machine: New blade, 2 new screws and 4 wing nuts, zip-ties, red lightbulb
