3.2. Roller assembly

The brake testers RAV RT009MX and RAV RT011MXs roller assembly consists
of a folded metal (plate) frame with reinforcements and C sections for
supporting and housing the operation and measurement devices.
The roller drive system consists of a gearmotor (one for each pair of rollers)
constrained to a load cell secured to the frame.
During braking, a tangential force is applied to the rollers which creates a
torque resistant to the action of the gearmotor. In these conditions, the
gearmotor would tend to turn around the roller rotation axis if it were not
secured to the load cell.
In actual fact, the resistant torque generated by braking is unloaded on the cell.
The load cell sends a signal to the console which is used to manage result
calculation and display.
The roller assembly is fitted with a microswitch which indicates the presence of
a vehicle. If the support on which this is mounted is lowered, the microswitch no
longer detects the support, contact is made and an electric signal is sent to the
console; this is the signal for the motors to start.
In the event of the microswitch failing to make the contact, the console will not
receive the signal and consequently the test will be interrupted. For this reason
testing can only be carried out with the roller lowered by the presence of the
vehicle being tested.
The assembly block is also fitted with a proximity switch (known as CAR-ON
sensor) which establishes roller speed and consequently the vehicle wheel speed.
This quantity, which is continuously measured, when compared with the initial
wheel speed, determines the slide condition that causes the test to stop.

Roller stoppage at the end of the test is therefore determined by the set slide
threshold having been reached. This normally coincides with the detection of
maximum braking force.
The test can also be stopped by the operator, using the remote control or
keyboard, in the event of an emergency or special requirements.

3.3. Weighing frame

The axle-weighing frame consists of two cell retention metal crosspieces on
which the roller tester frame rests;
Three shear beam load cells send a signal to the console, which is proportionate
to the force applied by the axle of the two-wheeled vehicle being tested, thus
permitting weight measurement.

3.4. Wheel locking device (clamps)

The wheel-locking device is made up of a system of clamps controlled by
pneumatic pistons. One clamp is used to lock the rear wheel while the front
wheel test is being carried out; the other is used to block the front wheel whilst
the rear wheel test is being performed. The wheel locking device can be
automatic (two pistons for each clamp, see Figure 8) or semiautomatic (one
piston that locks the wheel against a fixed base see Figure 9) or manual (Figure
10).

Figure 8 Figure 9 Figure 10

3.5. Roller stop/start up control device (operator presence detect)

The device detecting operator presence comprises two platforms (one for the
front wheel cycle and the other for the rear wheel cycle) and is fitted with a
microswitch. The platforms are used to detect if an operator is present at the
test stand. The device is activated by stepping on it with the left foot as shown
in Figure 11. The foot cannot be taken off the platform for the entire duration of
the brake cycle because as soon as the pressure is removed the rollers will stop.
In the event that the operator working on the motorvehicle is not able to
activate the platform device (e.g. the rear brake pedal is situated on the
left-hand side), a second operator will have to keep the button pushed
down (see operator presence detection button in Figure s 2 and 3), found
on the front part of the console, for the entire duration of the braking
procedure.

4. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

4.1. Personnel training
The machine must only be used by specially trained and authorised persons. To
ensure the machine is operated in the best possible manner and measurements
are properly made, operators must be correctly trained and be in possession of
all information necessary in order to achieve operating standards that are in line
with the indications provided by the manufacturer. If in any doubt regarding the
use and maintenance of the machine, refer to the instruction manual; in the
event the doubt persists, contact an authorised technical assistance centre or
the RAVAGLIOLI S.p.A. technical department directly.

4.2. Emergency situations

IMPORTANT!: In the event of emergency situations, the special device on the

front panel of the console will have to be operated (see main
switch /emergency device in Figure 2- Figure 3), Therefore, the
console should be installed so the emergency device is easily
accessible.

IMPORTANT!: Unauthorised persons must not be allowed to enter the test

area. Only one operator must work inside the test area. In the
event of the operator, for any reason, not being able to exit from
the rollers, he should ask for assistance from a second operator
who may gain access to the test area only after activating the
emergency device.
.

IMPORTANT!: The machine is equipped with a device detecting operator

presence, comprising two platforms (one for the front wheel
cycle and the other for the rear wheel cycle). The device is
activated by stepping on to the corresponding platform with the
left foot. If this device is not activated the rollers are unable to
start up. The foot cannot be taken off the platform for the
entire duration of the brake cycle because as soon as
pressure is removed the rollers will stop.
The console is also fitted with a button (see operator presence
detection button in Figure 2 - Figure 3), that a second
operator, in the event that the operator working on the
motorvehicle is not able to activate the platform device (e.g. the
rear brake pedal is situated on the left-hand side), will have to
keep pushed down for the entire duration of the braking cycle.
Again, as soon as the button is released, the rollers stop.

In any case, the rollers cannot normally be started up unless

the wheel of the motorvehicle is on the roller assembly. Press
the STOP button on the remote control to stop the rollers; this
is necessary if the vehicles brakes are inefficient and do not
allow automatic roller stoppage.

4.3. Operating precautions

IMPORTANT!: Since the motorvehicle is sometimes reactively pushed off the

rollers, to start testing, as described in para. 4.8 the wheel
locking clamp must first be locked. Pay attention during start
up and braking procedures, bearing in mind the objective
difficulty of maintaining the motorvehicle wheel in a position
that is perpendicular to the roller axles. Check that the wheel is
correctly positioned and locked, then start the rollers up only
after adequate safety conditions have been ensured.

IMPORTANT!: Before performing a test, make sure the brakes are dry and
that tyre pressure is correct.

4.8. Brake test procedure

4.8.1. Brake test procedure preparation

Fit the pedal pressure meter on the brake pedal where necessary and set the
lever pressure meter ready for use.
The braking procedure is divided into two phases, one for each wheel being
tested.
The brake tester can carry out take the following tests
- Single wheel drag;
- Brake ovality or eccentricity;
- Maximum braking force on the wheel;
- Braking efficiency;
- Brake pedal and additional brake lever pressure
Steer the two-wheeled vehicle onto the rollers and engage the roller assembly.
Step onto the platform with the left foot. Lock the wheel locking clamp with the
START key, the system will show the clamp in locking phase. Wait for the
clamp to lock. Removing the foot from the operator presence detection
device will open the clamp and the programme will display the warning
page in Figure 19.

Figure 17

If using the MANUAL LOCKING DEVICE this MUST be fixed onto its runner. By
adjusting the screws, move the surface of the clamp up against the
motorvehicless tyre. This will guarantee the test is carried out correctly. Notify
the programme of this set up by pressing the (green), START key. The manual
locking device icon will stop flashing and remain fixed.

4.8.3. Wheel drag, brake heating

After starting the rollers, wait for the braking pressure readings to appear on the
digital indicators; at this stage, DO NOT BRAKE. The readings that appear on
the top centre indicator, referring to the front wheel (see Figure 22) indicate the
pressure needed to drag the unbraked wheel (rolling resistance only).
Where it becomes necessary to warm the brake up, slowly brake until a pressure
reading is displayed on the indicator at the same time avoiding stoppage.
Release the brake pedal and observe the pressure readings on the digital and
analogical indicators, assessing whether there is an immediate return to
minimum readings corresponding to rolling force.

7. MAINTENANCE
IMPORTANT!: Before carrying out any maintenance work, the machine must
be disconnected from the mains and the mains power supply
be interrupted.
In the event that the cover guards have to be removed from
the brake tester, the work area will have to be fenced off so as
to prevent access to unauthorised persons.

The following procedures must be carried out every 6 months approx.; if

however, the equipment is used very frequently, these are best performed every
2-3 months:
- grease the brake tester roller drive chains.
- check the tension of the brake tester chains and, if necessary, adjust these so
the rollers stay aligned.
- clean the bottom of the brake tester and suspension tester foundation pits
with a vacuum cleaner; all parts must be free to move and the electric motor air
vents and water drainpipes must not be blocked.
The monitor must be cleaned using a dry, soft and anti-static cloth; if this is
very dirty, clean with a damp cloth and then dry.
The standard PC type keyboard must be simply dusted with a brush; when it is
not used, it is a good idea to protect it against dust by means of a cover.
Cleaning and replacement of cartridges and other printer maintenance
procedures are described in the printer manual. Always refer to the manual
before performing any printer maintenance procedures.
IMPORTANT!: All other maintenance procedures, not described above (such as
calibration control) are described in the installation and
calibration manual; these procedures must only be performed
by RAVAGLIOLI S.p.A. specialised and authorised personnel.

8. STORING AND SCRAPPING

Storing - In case of having to store the machine for long periods, all supply lines
must be disconnected and all parts susceptible to excessive dust damage e.g.,
printer, monitor, must be protected.
Grease all parts susceptible to excessive dryness damage.

Scrapping Upon deciding not to use the machine any more, this is best made
inoperative:
- Ensure all potentially hazardous parts are rendered harmless.
- Classify the parts according to disposal type
- Scrap as iron and dispose of through authorised channels.
- If considered special waste, dismantle and separate into same type groups and
dispose of in compliance with the laws in force.
