TITLE: AIR BORNE VEHICLE

PROBLEM:

The Wright brothers are credited with the invention of Airplane. But some
historians believe that Leonardo de Vinci is the father of flight design.
c
Using only aluminum cans, design a model of an airborne vehicle that
can fly at least 3 minutes. It should hit the bull·s eye (or near to it) of a
nearby target.
c
OBJECTIVE:

^esign a model of an air borne vehicle that made

with aluminum cans that can fly for at least 3
minutes and heat the target.
c
HYPOTHESIS:

Use of suitable lighter gas to carry the air borne

vehicle for more then 3 minutes and hiat the target
when the atmosphere air is released.

Œtep 1: Building an Airplane
This operation is to make the air plane using the aluminum.
c
aterials:
6 Two aluminum canes 6 Glue 6 Œcissors
6 Gloves 6 etal ruler
ethod:
Cut the upper part of the canes and join the two canes with glue to make the body
of the airplane.

wc Cut the upper part of the cans.

wc Goin the cans.
c
Œtep 2: ºilling the àelium gas.
The àelium gas is lighter than the atmosphere air. Œo it will help the balloon to float
in the air. At the same time it also will carry the airplane.
aterials:
6 Balloon (Gred G-20) 6 100 3 of àelium gas 6 Valve (40 gm)

ethod:
ºill the balloon with approximately 100 l of àelium gas. Tight up the valve at the
mouth of the balloon to control the amount of àelium gas. Connect the balloon with
the airplane using thread.
c wc àold the balloon carefully during filling
the àelium gas.
wc Carefully tight up the valve.
wc Connect the balloon with the airplane.
c
Œtep 3: Connection with Balloon and the Œupport.
Tight the airplane with nylon thread.
Connect the air borne vehicle with the support to hold the air borne vehicles
position in the air.

aterials:
6 „ylon thread 6 Œcissors 6 etal stand

wc Tied with nylon thread.

wc Tied with metal stand.

c
Œtep 4: Preparation of Air Chamber
ºill the balloon with the atmosphere air. aterials:
Insert the balloon into the air chamber. 6 odel of air chamber 6 Balloon
Pump
ethod:
àold the balloon carefully and fill it with atmosphere air.
Œlowly insert the end of the balloon into the air chamber without tight up the mouth
of the balloon.
àold the mouth of the balloon for the next step.

ethod:
àold the mouth of the balloon and observe the position of airborne vehicles.
Gently release the atmosphere gas and observe the movement of the vehicle.

LIST OF VARIABLES
c
anipulated variable:
-cAtmosphere air

Constant variable:
-c The weight of airplane 43 gm
-c Weight of the valves 40 gm
-c Weight of the empty Balloons 20 gm
-c Length of the airplane 250 mm
-c Length of the air chamber 300 mm
-c ^istance between airplane and air chamber 65 mm
-c ^istance between base of an airplane with valves 300 mm
c
?esponding variable
-c The position of airplane after the atmosphere air is released.
SAFETY MEASURES AND PRECAUTIONS
c
ècWe have to implement many safety measures in completing the experiments
to minimize any untoward incidents and also to avoid contamination of the
experiment area. This is important to obtain better model of an air borne
vehicle and improve our results. Œome of the measures include:
ècVery careful in handling apparatus like the scissors and aluminum cans to
avoid injuries to fingers.
ècWore gloves when handling the aluminum cans.
ècWear goggles during the experiment to avoid any substance or materials from
entering the eyes.
ècAlways guided by elders during the experiment.
