WHATISDISTRICTCOOLING?
ADistrictCoolingSystem(DCS)distributesthermalenergyintheformofchilledwaterorothermedia
fromacentralsourcetomultiplebuildingsthroughanetworkofundergroundpipesforuseinspace
andprocesscooling.
DCSeliminatestheneedforseparatesystemsinindividualbuildingsasthecoolingorheatrejectionis
usuallyprovidedfromacentralcoolingplant.
ADCSconsistsofthreeprimarycomponents:thecentralplant,thedistributionnetworkandthe
consumersystem.
Thecentralplantmayincludethecoolingequipment,powergenerationandthermalstorage.
ThedistributionorpipingnetworkisoftenthemostexpensiveportionoftheDCSandwarrants
carefuldesigntooptimizeitsuse.
Theconsumersystemwouldusuallycompriseofairhandlingunitsandchilledwaterpipinginthe
building.
