Prerequisites
The course is part of the professional studies in Networks, and is scheduled for the third
year students in Information Technology. The course is also offered to our students in
Open University of Applied Sciences.
To be able to successfully follow up the unit, the students must know the basics of
LANs, TCP/IP protocols and network systems, i.e. he or she must master the central
topics of following courses:
Network Project (first year)
Local Area Networks
Internetworks.
Course Contents
Hands-on labs.
Learning Outcomes
Class hours include lectures of the central topics, practical demonstrations and
exercises. Laboratory working includes guided exercises of NMS system setup, analysis
and usage.
The course also includes an optional project of a special topic, selected by the student.
The project includes information search, practical working and reporting. The student
must follow the given project deadline. With the project, the course extend is 4 ECTS. If
the student decides not to do the optional project (or he/she misses the deadline), the
course is worth 3 ECTS.
Assessment Methods
Theoretical and practical learning results are tested with a written examination, and with
laboratory and project working and project report. For passing the course, a sufficient
total weighted score for laboratory works, project and the exam is needed.
Weighting factors for the evaluation elements are the following, with the project (4
ECTS):
final exam 50 %
laboratory works 25 %
project 25 %.
Without the project the weighting factors are the following (3 ECTS):
final exam 67 %
laboratory works 33 %

Laboratory working will be done on scheduled weeks, in one or two groups (max. 20
students each).
The deadline for delivering the project document is at the end of Period 4, 2017
(28.5.2017). After that, the project report is not accepted.
The final exam will be arranged during the exam week (w11), on Monday 13.3.2015 at
17.00. The exam room will be announced later.
