My name is Alan Law and I am an Asian American. My ethnic background is Iu Mien. I am a
member of the Golden Valley High Schools 2017 graduating class with a cumulative GPA of 3.8. After graduation, I plan to enroll at Merced College to complete my prerequisites then transfer to University of the Pacific majoring in Chemistry and pursuing my dreams of becoming a Pharmacist. To achieve my goal of becoming a Pharmacist I am in need of financial assistance. I was raised in a family with a low economic status, where I witnessed the hardships that my grandparents went through as immigrants with no educational background. The struggles and sacrifices they had to endure getting a job that did not require a high school diploma or college degree was agonizing. In addition to their lack of education, they also had to deal with the language barriers that occurred when trying to communicate with others. For work, my grandparents had to turn to field work which exhausted them physically and psychologically. In addition to my grandparents hardships, I also witnessed the struggles my parents went through to raise a family with just their high school diplomas. Although my parents received their high school diplomas, without a college degree it was difficult for them to obtain the best employment possible to support a family of five. With some help from family members, my mother was eventually able to attend college and obtain a degree in Liberal Studies and soon after a degree in Nursing. It wasnt until after my mother obtained higher education degrees that allowed her to obtain a higher paid employment. After witnessing both the different hardships my grandparents and parents endured, it has been my motivation to get the best and highest education possible. Throughout high school, Ive worked hard to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.8 while participating in extracurricular activities. I was involved in sports year round such as Football, Track and Field and Cross Country. I joined the Empowerment club supporting gender equality and self-empowerment. I also volunteered as a Peer Mentor where I assisted fellow classmates that needed support in integrated math 2. Outside of school, I volunteered at the local elementary school assisting teachers in the classroom throughout the year. Although I was active in extracurricular activities, school always came first, as shown in my grades and GPA. After high school, I plan to enroll at University of the Pacific where I expect to gain an array of skill sets to help me be successful. These skills I expect to gain includes: networking, communication, leadership and time management. Through networking, I would like to broaden my connections socially and professionally while improving my communication skills with a diverse population. I would like to develop various types of leadership skills so that I could successfully adapt to any situation and help those I interact with to become successful. I believe that by developing leadership skills, it would create trust among peers and would encourage a positive and professional positive setting. By gaining time management skills, this would help me balance my academics, social and personal life. I expect college to not only challenge my intellect, but to also help me achieve my goal of becoming a Pharmacist and building my future. What I hope to attain after college is to reach my goal of becoming a Pharmacist within 3 years after my undergraduate studies rather than the average 4 years. I hope to increase my knowledge in science and learn the different reactions that medication has on a human physically and mentally. My goal is to become an employer in a Pharmaceutical work environment. Specifically, my long term goal is to become a Pharmacist so that I could help others by distributing medications to help stop illnesses and decrease pain. After obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Pre-Health Sciences, I hope to continue my education and work towards a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree. This will then allow me to meet the requirements to take the state boards in Pharmacy and certify me as a licensed Pharmacist.
