CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Today, we live in an electronic age where knowledge id produced and communicated

at expanding rates. Computers technology has been accepted and utilized by almost every
field of interest, may it be in sciences, medicine, business, education or engineering.

Libraries have been an essential part of a school, community and other

establishments. Although the internet has become extensively popular as a source of
information, library has never stopped to be significant to man.

AMA Computer College of Legazpi Campus is one of the institution performing different
activities. The AMA Computer College Library (Legazpi), which still uses the manual
processing especially in searching research studies. Many inaccuracies may be encountered
while doing these manual methods. Faster transaction is impossible because of the time it
consumed in performing the task. These are the reasons why the proponents proposed a
computer-based system in searching the research studies of AMA Computer College, which
entitled AMA Computer College of Legazpi Campus Researchers Hub.

Background of the Study

Computers have become integrated into the process of learning in schools. It has
become an important part of academic life. It is a great tool in speeding up work. It plays a big
role towards the success of our country and our people. Computers are highly precise and
very productive.

Computerization is the current trends in the world. AMA Computer College has
pioneered the move towards computerization. Since its birth as The Amable M. Aguiluz
Institute of Computer Studies (AMAICS) in October 1980, it has led the way in providing
quality computer education in the country.

In year 1998, AMA Computer College main branch put up a branch in Legazpi City. On
June 1968, AMACC Legazpi started its classes. It started with student population of 500
students, with two (2) computer laboratories, seven (7) classrooms and a small library.

AMACC Legazpi Library started with few numbers of research studies and other
reference materials. The students, librarian and guest users encounter problems in finding the
research studies. A prominent amount of time is consumed searching for the right research
studies. Because of these problems of manual system the proponents proposed a system in
titled AMA Computer College Legazpi Campus Researchers Hub to extinguish the problems
that are discussed.
 AMA Computer College of Legazpi Campus Researchers Hub is one of the features
that will help the library of this institution, an online database materials held by a library.

In this system, the students can transact easier through online and they can know the
researchs availability. The librarian can use it to check the existing researches and studies
within the institution. This system was developed to provide enough capacity in keeping data
records and to enhance library appearance. All the manual difficulties in managing the
files/research have been done by implementing this system. In this system, the students can
search for the study theyre looking for in an easier way by checking it online.

Statement of the Problem

The current system of checking the availability, of books eats up a lot of time for the
students, guest users and the librarian.

Specifically, they found that:

1. Inefficient and unorganized storage of information.

2. Outside the school or when the library is closed, students cant find out if the research
study is available.
3. Finding certain title is not easy for the students and guest users, since it is done
manually.
4. The librarian finds it very difficult to track the research study. Monitoring each of file
cannot be done properly.

Objective of the Study

The general objective of the study is to organize and develop an AMA Computer
College of Legazpi Campus Researchers Hub. In every schools, being time-efficient is
needed especially during defences, researching, etc. Hereunder are the specific objectives
deduced from the study:

1. The records will be properly stored and will easily be retrieved; and only the librarian
can access the database of it. The records will be properly stored and will easily be
retrieved. Records will be more organized.
2. Anyone from outside of the school premises can browse through the list of research.
3. To accurately monitor the research and to provide a convenient way for students and
other users to inquire about the availability of research even when theyre outside the
campus, or when the library is closed.
4. In addition, this proposed system aim to create an easy to use, faster and user-friendly
interface. To save time and effort.

Significance of the Study

. The significance of the Researchers study is that itll benefit both the librarian and
clients who are seeking on the specific research studies. Implementing the study helps the
campus perform the tasks effectively.
The School. The main grantee on this study is the AMA Computer College of Legazpi
Campus itself because this would support them in providing efficient service to its clients.

The Librarian. This study would benefit the librarian because the librarian will have an
easier and faster access to AMA Computer College research studies. The librarian will
have stress free experience on monitoring the researchs availability.

The Students. The study will give more benefit to the students who are seeking out for
different Research studies because the study will yield them a valuable and faster service.

The Public. The study will give them a better understanding that computer technology has
a huge impact in any various fields.

Field of I.T. This study introduces the improvement of technology to the librarian,
students, and guest users that is still adjusting manual method.

Scope and Limitations

The proposed study is meant for AMA Computer College of Legazpi Campus
specifically in the Library Section. In which the proposed system covers research studies
such as Capstone Project, Feasibilities Studies and Design Projects.

The System is a website where students, guests can search for the Research Projects
theyre seeking in AMA Legazpi. The Librarian is included in the scope wherein the
Librarian is the only one authorized in manipulating the database of the said system.

The limit of the system is where only the student of AMA Legazpi can register and view
the Abstract of the studies on the website. Guest cant register because the system is
exclusive for AMA Computer College Legazpi students. Guest can view the title, year
published and author of the research studies that they are seeking. However, guest may
view the whole study if they will personally come to the campus. Another limit of the
system is that both students and guest is not allowed to borrow any research studies.

Definition of Terms
 Chapter II

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or conclusions,

methodologies and others. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing
information that are relevant and similar to the present study. It also guides the researchers in
making comparisons between their findings of other corresponding studies.

Related Literature

The related literature is any published and unpublished writings that has pertinence to
the study and will support the study for further investigation.

Finding and managing specific research studies are being said one of the tiring task to
do due to lack of organizing and sorting of files but as time progresses, a well-organized and
sorted files is necessary.

Digital Library

Chinas Digital Library program started off with research projects, embedded within the
National High Technology Research and Development Program, launched in 1986, managed
by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Some of these were strategic research on the
development of Chinese Digital Libraries, Research on Characteristics-based Multimedia
Information Retrieval System, Knowledge Network Digital Library System Project, and
Chinese Digital Library Application System on China advanced Info.Optic NET(CAINONET)
(Liu, 2004).

Library Development in Singapore had been well mapped out and the driving force
behind it was the National Library Board, formed in 1995. In retrospect, Singapores digital
library development was spearhead by the Library 2000 Committee, comprising of librarians
as well as the Singapore National Computer Board, to establish Singapore as an international
information hub. The plan included a detailed rework 500 libraries and information centers
that would enable access to information from anywhere, at any time, within the next 20 years.

Related Studies

The proposed system entitled AMA Computer College Library (Legazpi) Enhanced
Card Catalogue System by Karen C. Cimanes and Khristine B. Terrogo decided to
computerize the card catalogue of AMA Legazpis Library because of the problems
encountered in the existing manual method. The proponent wanted to provide a systematic,
efficient and reliable processing of records. So, the user of the system will accomplish tasks
with minimal or no difficulties at all. The main objective is to develop a system that will
automate the traditional card catalogue which consists of the title, subject, and author card of
AMA Legazpis Library. The proponents have proven that computerization of card catalogue
would make out great improvements that are more efficient and less time consuming than the
traditional system.

Automated Library System of Ligao City Public Library a study conducted by Julius
Albert P. Nuez and Phoebe R. Nariz, the proponents would use the computer technology in
making solutions for the problems encountered by current system. Because of the manual
procedures used, problems are encountered. The researchers decided to conduct the study
at the Ligao City Public Library in order to help the institution in accomplishing their tasks
better. The proposed system aims to develop a system that would computerize the
registration of the clients and store the records of each member in database in order to
enable quick searching and updating the records.

Balde, Ordiz, Ortiz and Lumibao of AMA Computer College of Legazpi proposed a
system entitled,Albay Provincial Library Information System. Generally, the proposed
system aims to satisfy the demands of the librarys existing members and future members.
The finding shows that the proposed system will enable the librarian and its staff to make
speedy process of information; avoid inconsistency and redundancy in recording data for the
books in circulation, accurate and secure recording of members files, generates accurate
inventory report, easy to monitor acquisition lists and up to date determination of status of the
books. The system for Albay Provincial Library will be the ultimate solution to the problems
that they are encountering in doing their day to day job.

The Computerization of Library Transaction System: Book Loan and Search Module
is the proposed system by Rhaiman P. Perdigon, Julbie A. Macasaeb and Norbert P. Copones
of Aquinas University of Legazpi. The proposed system was presented by the researchers to
be able to upgrade the manual system of library transactions now being used, maximize the
effort thus saving valuable time. Their main objective is to elaborate a system that is more
advantageous in terms of time accuracy in the library transaction, to deliver better
improvements in making the library transactions, to enhance the manual system that will be
more productive and to improve the monitoring of outgoing and incoming of the books inside
the library.
