Tactic: Soccer- Restarting Play/

Thrown In
Restarting the play and throwing in the soccer ball to another
teammate during a game in order to maintain possession of the soccer
ball after the game has been stopped by a referee or has crossed the
long side lines. In order for a throw in to be rewarded, the ball must go
past the ENTIRE long sideline of the field. The teammate who throws
the ball in must use both hands and the ball must go behind the head
and then thrown forward. Both feet must stay on the ground until the
throw in is made. This tactic is used for the invasion game of soccer.
Even though it is used for soccer specifically, it may also transfer to
other invasion sports such as basketball.

Who: The teammate usually closest to the ball when the opposing
team forces it out will throw in the ball. Anyone relatively close to the
ball may throw in the ball in order to keep the game running smoothly
and get the ball into the offense as quickly and accurately as possible.
Some teams may also have a designated player to perform throw ins.

What: The soccer ball that is being used during gameplay.

When: When the soccer ball is kicked or forced out of bounds along
either touchline (sideline) of the soccer field. This rules applies if the
ball goes out of play while either on the ground or in the air.

Why: To get the ball back into the playing field and resume gameplay.
This allows the opposing team to maintain possession of the ball when
the opposing team causes the gameplay to stop due to the ball being
forced out of appropriate given space on the field.

How: When the game of soccer is being played and one of the teams
hits the ball out of play in any way, the throw in is rewarded to the
opposing team that didnt touch the ball last. A teammate on the
possessing team will obtain the ball at the point where the ball was
forced out. The thrower must stand with a part of each foot either on or
behind the touchline. The thrower may either run up to the touchline
or stand but when the ball is thrown, both of their feet must be on the
ground. To complete a throw, the ball must be pulled back behind the
head with both hands and thrown forward into the field of play. The
throwers main goal is to get the ball to their teammates as accurately
as possible. (This may result in a pass towards the goal or away from
the goal, either way is acceptable.) Once the ball is released it has to
be touched by a player from either team in order for the thrower to
touch it again.

Practice Throwing Students will partner up and practice the correct

9:01-9:04 technique to complete a throw in. Partners will
throw back and forth to each other with a poly
stripe in front of each of them while standing
about 15 feet apart (adjust based on skill level) in
order to try and master the tactic. Start with a
basic standing throw in and work way up to a
Throwing with Students will practice throwing the ball in while
Offense their partner is on the move. Partners may move
on the Move laterally or front to back in order to maintain
9:04-9:07 possession of the soccer ball. The thrower needs to
make the decision to either throw it towards their
feet (when in front of defender) or in the air (when
behind the defender).

Adding a Defender Get into groups of 3 and try to complete a

successful throw in to the offense with a defense
trying to go for the ball as well. Rotate every two
throw ins to allow maximum participation from
each student.

Conclusion Reflect on the lesson and ask for important teaching

9:09-9:10 points that were learned.

Important Teaching Points! 1.) When throwing the ball in, ALWAYS have both feet on
the ground. 2.) Make sure to pull ball behind head with both hands. 3.) Throw ball with even
force exerted from both hands. 4.) The ball HAS to touch another player in order for the
thrower to touch the ball again. 5.) Examine the entire field before throwing.
