1. Summary
1.1 Summary
This manual is a guiding technical document for storage, installation, operation and
maintenance of the shaft seal oil supply system of 220MW water hydrogen-hydrogen
cooled steam turbine generator made by Beijing Beizhong Steam Turbine Generator Co.,
Ltd.
1.2 Scope
This manual applied to the shaft seal oil supply system of 220MW water
hydrogen-hydrogen cooled steam turbine generator made by Beijing Beizhong Steam
Turbine Generator Co., Ltd.
2. Technical parameters

temperature, pressure and flow all conform to the requirements, thus to realize the seal
of hydrogen under the rated pressure in the generator, and provide the corresponding
control and alarm signal contact, ensuring that the generator will run safely. The seal oil
will be purified, pressurized, adjusted, cooled and filtered in the system.
This system also possesses the functions of recovering and processing the seal oil
at the air side and the hydrogen side.
3.1.2 Operation principles
This system consists of oil supply device for shaft seal, heater, balanced valve and
pressure difference valve, exhaust blower, oil-gas separator (see the figure), where the
oil supply device for shaft seal will collect the oil sealing box, oil cooler, ac and dc oil
pumps and oil filter on a underpan, and provided with the terminal box delivering the
signals, such as, pressure, pressure difference, temperature and fluid level.
As the seal bearing liner is of bi-steam ring structure, this system also provides
with the oil circuits both at the air side and the hydrogen side separately, the air side is
open circulation while the hydrogen side is close circulation.
3.1.2.1 Oil circuit at the air side
1 The two ac oil pumps and one dc spare oil pump of the oil supply device for
shaft seal are connected in parallel on the upstream of the oil cooler at the air side, the
three pumps act as the spare ones, and adopt the separate power source. The oil source
is the oil-gas separator. The differential pressure valve will track and adjust the hydrogen
pressure in the generator automatically after the oil having been pressed, cooled and
filtered, so that the oil pressure at the air side of the seal bearing liner is 0.05MPa higher
than the hydrogen pressure in the generator. The pressure difference between
hydrogen and oil will be ensured by adjusting the by pass with the manually controlled
valve during a failure.
When the outlet pressure of the first ac oil pump decreases down to the setting
pressure, the pressure switch of the oil pump outlet will begin to act, start the second ac
oil pump. Start the dc spare pump if there are the faults both in the two pump at the same
time, ensuring the system running safely.
2 The gas in the oil will be separated out after the return of seal oil at the air
side of the generator and the return of bearing lubricant have been expanded through
oil-gas separator, the gas will be discharged into the air with the action of the exhaust

blower connecting to the oil-gas separator, so as to make the return fluently. The return
oil flows back to the main lubricant system from the oil-gas separator through U siphon,
which will seal up the gas, avoiding the hydrogen escaping into the lubricant system.
3 The differential pressure meter and differential pressure switch are both fixed
on the inlet and outlet of the oil filter, which can monitor the differential pressure of the
cartridge, when the differential pressure rises, the differential pressure switch acts and
gives the out of gauge alarm signal.
3.1.2.2 Oil circuit at hydrogen side
The close ring oil circuit at hydrogen side consists of oil seal box, ac and dc oil
pumps, oil cooler, oil filter, balanced valve and seal ring at hydrogen side of the seal
bearing liner connected in series. The balanced valve will track the oil pressure of the
ring at the air side, adjust the oil outlet pressure at hydrogen side automatically, and keep
the oil pressures of the hydrogen side and air side of the seal bearing liner basically
equal, with the error not more than 0.001MPa.
The return oils at hydrogen sides of the DE and the NDE will first pass through a
section of U tube separately, isolate the hydrogen that may be brought by the seal oil at
the upstream of the U tube, than separate the hydrogen in oil with two volume expanders,
let the oil flows into oil seal box fluently. The seal oil box shall be half filled for ever, the
seal oil again applies pressure in the oil tank, relieving hydrogen mixed in the oil. The
hydrogen contained in the oil will be removed basically by separating and obviating
hydrogen through U tube, volume expander, oil seal box, avoiding hydrogen recycle
produced between the generator end and the air return. The oil quality is clean, and the
recycle of the seal oil can be guaranteed. The lines will be amplified appropriately so as
to reduce the oil speed and improve the unloading condition.

The screw pump driven by dc motor will act as the spare one of the oil pipe at air
side. The dc oil pump at air side shall start automatically if there are the faults in the two
ac oil pumps at the same time, causing the outlet pressure of the pump decreases down
to the setting value.
3.2.3 ac oil pump at hydrogen side
The screw pump driven by ac motor will act as the main pump of the oil pipe at
hydrogen side, with the outlet pressure being 1MPa and the rated flow being
4.2m3/h(70L/min).
3.2.4 dc spare oil pump at hydrogen side
The screw pump driven by dc motor will act as the spare oil pump of the oil pipe,
with the outlet pressure being 1MPa and the rated flow being 4.2m3/h(70L/min).The dc
oil pump at hydrogen side shall start automatically when there is a fault in the ac oil pump
at hydrogen side which causes the outlet pressure of the pump to decrease down to the
setting value.
When there are the faults both in the ac oil pump and the dc spare pump at
hydrogen side, the oil pipe at air side will keep running in single ring, but it will run only
temporarily and belong to the running under abnormal operation condition.
3.2.5 Oil cooler
There are separate two oil coolers (oil-water heat exchanger) both at air side and
hydrogen side, connected in parallel, one for running and the other for spare. The heat
exchange area of each oil cooler either at air side or at hydrogen side is 12.5m2with the
operation pressure being 0.8MPa. There may be lack of volume temporarily in the oil
cooler under the limit working conditions in summer, put two oil coolers into work if
necessary. (The pressure shall not be higher than 1.0MPa for the test carried out in the
power plant).
3.2.6 Oil filter
There are separate two oil filters both at air side and hydrogen side, connected in
parallel, one for running and the other for spare. The oil filter is of the self-clean doctor
blade structure, the filter precision is 80m. Rotate the handle to remove the dirt on the
cartridge when the system is running.
3.2.7 Oil-gas separator
In order to ensure the safe running of the main oil box of the steam turbine
generator and prevent the hydrogen from flowing in, it is necessary to make the mixture

of the return. oil at the air side and that of the lubricant of the generator flow through the
oil-gas separator, letting the gas in the oil escape into the air, and the remainder will be
blocked at the upstream of U tube at the bottom of the oil tank, so that the gas can not
flow into the main oil tank of the steam turbine generator.
3.2.8 Exhaust blower
The volume of the mixture of the return oil at air side and that of the lubricant will
be expanded when flowing through the oil-gas separator, so as the gas in the oil will
escape into the air under the action of exhaust blower, which will run continuously when
the generator in under hydrogen status. There are two exhaust blowers connected in
parallel, one for running and the other for spare.
3.2.9 Oil sealed box
The oil sealed box is the important part of the oil pipe at hydrogen side, the main
function is to keep the oil level normal in the box automatically, thus separating the
hydrogen in the generator from the oil pipe at the downstream of the oil sealed box, the
hydrogen can not escape to the seal oil, damaging the normal operation of oil pump
and seal bearing liner. The pump at hydrogen side takes oil from this box, where there
should be a level meter and two level switches at high level600mmand low level
200mm. It will begin to act when the oil level is too high or too low and give the alarm.
The oil sealed box will be supplied and drained by ball-cock automatically, which
can reduce the change speed of the oil level in the box, avoiding hydrogen escaping into
the circulation system of oil pipe. The liquid level of the oil sealed box will be kept by the
ball-cock, supplying and draining at any time, the oil level is basically at the intermediate
face, keeping dynamic balance. The oil sealed box shall be provided with manual valves
for supplying and draining, which can make the oil sealed box keep the normal oil level if
the ball-cock is out of order.
3.2.10 Balance valve
The balance valve is the main control element of the seal oil system, it is fixed
on the oil pipe at hydrogen side, of which the function is to adjust the seal oil pressure at
hydrogen side through following the seal oil pressure changes at air side and keep the oil
pressure difference of the two sides within 0.001MPa.
3.2.11 Differential pressure valve
The differential pressure valve, the same as the balance valve, is another main
control element in the seal oil system and fixed on the oil pipe at air side. The function is

to follow the. hydrogen pressure in the generator, adjust the oil pressure at the air side
automatically, so that the oil pressure at air side will be 0.05MPa higher than the
hydrogen pressure in the generator from beginning to end.
3.2.13 Terminal box
This system shall be provided with the terminal box of the output signals,
collecting the connecting terminals of the outlet pressures of ac and dc oil pumps at air
side, the outlet pressures of ac and dc oil pumps at hydrogen side, the inlet and outlet
pressure difference of the oil filter, the outlet pressure of oil cooler, fluid level of oil seal
box and the oil temperatures of the outlets at hydrogen and air sides.

3.3.1.2 Switches

the oil filter at hydrogen side;

8) SP03 SP04 differential pressure switch of very low hydrogen and oil
pressure difference.
3.3.1.3 Transducer

3.3.2 Recovery and disposal of oil
3.3.2.1 Site displays
1) T3return oil temperature of NDE at air side;
2) T4return oil temperature of DE at air side;
3) TT3return oil temperature of DE at hydrogen side;with remote transmitting;
4) TT4return oil temperature of NDE at hydrogen side;with remote transmitting;
5) Oil level of oil seal box;
6) Oil level of oil-gas separator.
3.3.2.2 Switches
1) SN10liquid level switch for low oil level of oil sealed box;

4.2 Acceptance
The customer shall inform the manufacturer (or the resident representative in
the manufacture) to open the package and inspect the goods together when it arrives,
and countersign in the related documents
4.3 Hanging
The shaft seal oil supply device and other parts of this product shall not be
extruded and fractioned with the steel wire during hanging, avoiding the product being
damaged, handle care, avoiding vibration and collision.
4.4 Storage
The products shall be kept in doors if they can not be installed at once, the
environment shall be free of corrosion, the related humidity not higher than 80%,
the temperature not lower than 5. If the conditions are not met, it is necessary to
restore the package, place the drying agent inside, in order to meet the
requirements for rain proof, moisture proof, avoiding mechanical damage.
5 Installation
5.1 Summary
The installation quality affects the system running directly, it shall be carried out
according to the related national standards, the design drawings and documents of the
power designing institute and the drawing ad manual of this system strictly. The pipe
fittings and elbow pipes of the inlet pipe shall be made of stainless steel, the oil return
pipe made of 20# seamless steel pipe. The seal washer shall be made of
polytetrafluoroethylene. All the pipe fittings and elbow pipes shall be subject to pickling

before installation, neutralizing treatment, and be applied with 901 anticorrosion paint on
the inner wall after drying and seal up, so as to keep clean and without any foreign
matters inside. There should be 30 0 groove (for the pipe fittings more than 1 inch)
on the butt pipes, taking argon arc welding as the basis.
5.3 Precautions
5.3.1 Protect the instrument, such as, the fluid level signaling apparatus, avoiding
collision.
5.3.2 The seal oil container shall be so installed that the directions and the positions of
the instrument and the valve shall be easy to be operated and observed.
5.3.3 There should be 4% slope down steam on the horizontal section of the oil return
pipe, the perpendicular height of each flange outlet shall not be less than 2000mm,
ensuring the return fluently.
5.3.4 Close the valves directly related to the seal bearing liner when flushing the
outside pipes, avoiding generator short circuit.
5.3.5 It shall be confirmed that there is no foreign matter in the oil-gas separator
before installation.
5.3.6 The blockage of each interface of the container shall not be removed before
connection to ensure the cleaning inside.
5.3.7 It is forbidden the shoes with hard bottoms from stepping on the tubes,
the valves and the instrument.
5.3.8 It is necessary to carry out the oil pressure test for the pipes (excluding
the seal bearing liner) after finishing installation. The test pressure for inlet pipe
shall be 1.0MPa, and 0.8MPa for the oil return pipes at hydrogen side and the
pressure signal pipes; 30min will be needed for leakage inspection and reparation.
It should be first confirmed that there is no oil inside when the patch weld is
needed. Only leakage inspection test shall be carried out for the oil return pipe at
air side. Remove the manometer and related meter with the range lower than the

test value. .
5.3.9 The short pipes directly connected with the inlet and outlet of the seal bearing
liner shall be designed to be dismantled easily, 5001000mm long, and not installed
before flushing the outside pipes, avoiding the generator short circuit during flushing.
6.2 Conditions
The flushing shall be carried out only after satisfying the following requirements:
6.2.1 This system has been installed and the oil pressure test has been finished;
6.2.2 The main oil box of the steam turbine generator has been already installed and
the oil source is available.
6.2.3 The oil pump source AC380VDC220Vof this system is available.
6.2.4 The lubricant system of the generator works.
6.3 Preparation
6.3.1 Close the valves related to the seal bearing liner short-circuit seal bearing liner,
make this system short circuit with temporary detachable pipes and filterscategory 180
Q=330L/min
6.3.2 Remove the filters at hydrogen side and air side, and connect with temporary
pipes.
6.3.3 Remove the ball cock in the oil seal box.

the fluid level, open the by-pass regulating valve of the pump at hydrogen side.
L401and start the pump at hydrogen side.
6.4.5 Close the discharge hole of the oil cooler after it keeps delivering.
6.4.6 Regulate the by-pass valves L401 L501 of the pump, let the outlet
pressure of the pump be 0.9-1.0MPa.
6.4.7 See whether oil drain valve 321 with low hydrogen pressure is closed.
6.5 Flushing
6.5.1 Each spare part, including the pump and by-pass, shall be switched periodically.
6.5.2 Clean the temporary filter periodically, till it becomes clean without cleaning.
Knock the pipes lightly with a wooden hammer from time to time during flushing.
6.5.3 Unload and supply new oil based on the cleanness of the oil.
6.5.4 The signal pipes of oil pressure and gas pressure shall be cleaned separately
(excluding balance valve and differential pressure valve).
6.5.5 Inspect whether there is oil leakage in the pipes, and record it. If there is leakage
on the connecting face of flange, it is necessary to tighten the bolt further and remove
leakage. The patch weld shall be carried out after draining if necessary.

balance valve and the differential valve and the working conditions of the oil pump will
be inspected.
7.2 Oil fillingthe gas within the generator being ordinary pressure
The oil shall be filled according to the following steps:
7.2.1 Fully open the by-pass valves L40-1 and L50-1 of the pump at hydrogen side
and air side.
7.2.2 Close balance valve and inlet valve 25-10 and 25-9close differential pressure
valve and inlet valve 50-2 and 50-4open by-pass valves 25-325-450-1 and 50-6.
7.2.3 Open all the valves of pressure signal pipes of the balance valve and differential
pressure valve.
7.2.4 Start ac oil pump at air side and fill the oil seal box with oil.
7.2.5 Start the pump at hydrogen side when the oil level in the oil seal box reaches the
upper limit, close by-pass valve L40-1 a little based on the fluid level, and open low
hydrogen pressure oil drain valve if necessary, the oil can not be drained out as there is
no pressure in the oil box at all.

attention to. the differential pressure of seal bearing liner and hydrogen pressure when
and where, adjust bypass valve to ensure the correct differential pressure. The oil
pressure at the pump outlet shall be near 1MPa when the atmosphere reaches the rated
value.

supplying .and draining frequently will occur in the oil seal box during debugging the
balance valve and differential pressure valve. Adjust bypass valve L50- of the oil pump
at the air side and supplying and draining valves 258 and 257so that the supplying
and draining will do slowly.
7.4.5 Examination of oil level of oil seal box
It is necessary to examine the oil level change of the oil seal box and the working
conditions of the ball cocks for supplying and draining oil during oil circulation, examine
oil level indication and adjust the level switch.

7.7 End circulation
The seal oil shall be changed if it is not clean after finishing circulation.
8 Running
8.1 Summary
The system will possess the condition for running after finishing debugging the
outlet pressure of the pump. It is necessary to make further adjustment for the
parameters of this system after running (since the generator being filled with hydrogen),
especially after the generator is loaded, this is because the flow at the seal bearing liner
will be larger than that when the main spindle is still after the revolution reaches 3000rpm,
i.e. the aperture of the balance valve and the differential pressure valve is different from
that of the rotor under static status. So the records made in the above section can only
be used as analysis parameter, the true data can only be obtained in the actual running.

2) It is. necessary to inspection the oil level of the oil seal box, and operate the oil
drain valve25-7 manually if there is trouble in oil draining. Open valve 32-1 and close a
little the bypass valve of the pump L40-1 if necessary, keeping the oil return fluently.
8.2.2 Running of oil pump, differential pressure valve, balance valve and filter
The flow of the seal bearing liner shall be the actual rated value under the rated
hydrogen pressure as the main spindle runs at 3000r/min, which will affect the rated
pressure value at the pump outlet. Meanwhile, the blockage of the oil filter will also affect
the pressure at the pump outlet and the oil pressure of the seal bearing liner. So it is
necessary to inspect the working conditions of the three during running and analyze the
corresponding relations between them, so as to accumulate the necessary data used for
judging whether the running is normally.
8.2.2.1 Setting of outlet pressure and changeover values of pump
The changeover process of putting the spare pump into operation shall be
finished by switching control circuit if the outlet pressure of the pump decreases down to
the lower setting owing to fault, the lower setting shall be obtained according to the
following conditions and methods.
8.2.2.1.1 Conditions
1 the rated hydrogen pressure in the generator;
2 the filter being clean;
3 both the balance valve and the differential pressure valve under normal
operation;
4 the oil level control system of oil seal box working normally;
5 the pump working normally.
8.2.2.1.2 Setting of the changeover value
The lower setting of pump changeover value will be 0.6MPathe pump will switch
automatically when it is lower than this value, the user can set the value again according
to the practical experienceGenerally it is 6070% of the outlet pressure of pump.
8.2.2.2 Differential pressure valve
The differential pressures of oil and hydrogen shall be kept by the differential
pressure valve automatically, it is necessary to measure the followings if you want to get
the pressure necessary for adjustment:

Hydrogen pressure of oil return at hydrogen side of seal oil.
The differential pressure valve will adjust the oil pressure at the entrance of seal
oil based on the hydrogen pressure, the differential pressure valve shall be separated

ensured by adjusting bypass valves 50-1 and 50-6 manually. When the differential
pressure of hydrogen and oil is ultrolow , the break and alarm will occur and the 2 in 3
logic will break the generator.
8.2.2.2.1 Putting in and withdrawing
First build up the oil pressure of the seal bearing liner at air side, which is 0.05MPa
higher than the hydrogen pressure in the generator with the bypass valve before putting
in, then switch the bypass slowly, preventing putting in the differential pressure valve
directly, so as to avoid impact, damage and injecting to the generator; Make reverse
operation when withdrawing, replace the differential pressure with the bypass valve.
Close the signal oil valve and the gas line valve, then remove the differential pressure
valve if the reparation is needed.
8.2.3 Oil-gas separator
It is necessary to unload through blowoff valve 15-2 at its bottom periodically
during running,
8.2.4 Oil cooler
When the oil temperature at the outlet is higher than 46, there is the alarm signal,
the spare oil cooler shall be put in use and the withdrawn one be repaired.

8.3.2.2 .
Pump at air side
1) The flow of the oil pump at air side will increase when running under this
condition and the pressure may probably decrease, adjust bypass vale L50-1 at the
outlet of the oil pump based on the pressure at the seal bearing liner, keeping the rated
pressure at the seal bearing liner. If the normal seal oil pressure can not be kept, then
decrease the hydrogen pressure in the generator, maintain 0.05MPa oil-hydrogen
differential pressure and let it run under decreased load and low hydrogen pressure
according to the manual for the host machine.
2) The flow of the pump at air side will increase under this working condition if
using the spare pump at air side and there may be decrease in the pressure, adjust
bypass valve L50-1 based on the pressure at the seal bearing liner and let the rated
pressure be kept at the seal bearing liner. The rest are the same as those mentioned
above.
8.3.2.3 Purity and humidity tests of hydrogen
As the oil at the air side of the seal bearing liner goes into the hydrogen side,
which will pollute the hydrogen in the generator, examine the indications of the analyzer
very often, take samples for analyzing the purity and humidity of the hydrogen in the
generator, take measures for exhausting and supplying hydrogen manually, so as to
ensure the hydrogen quality in the generator.
8.3.2.4 The period for running under abnormal conditions shall not be too long, it is
necessary to restore the pump at hydrogen side to run as fast as possibly, avoiding
supplying and draining hydrogen many times.
