AW/AU Spelling Pattern
Lesson Content Description:
Students practice writing words using AW/AU spelling patterns and then mask/sort them
in text.

Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery: Direct Instruction, partner and independent


work.

NGSS Standard:
1.RF.2d- Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual
sounds (phonemes).
1.RF.3- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
both in isolation and in text
1.L.2d- Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for
frequently occurring irregular words.

ELD Standard: (Bridging) 1. Exchanging information and ideas Contribute to class, group,
and partner discussions by listening attentively, following turn-taking rules, and asking and
answering questions.
Common Core Lesson Objective:
SWBAT write words using AU and AW spelling patterns.

Assessment:
Formative:
Active participation in word segmenting and writing words on white boards.
Summative:
Masking AU and AW words in sentences and sorting them according to their spelling
pattern.

This is day 3 of this spelling pattern. Students learned and practiced AW pattern day
1 and AU pattern day 2. This lesson combines both patterns for continued practice.

Review AW/AU spelling patterns as a class

THROUGH

Teacher states the number of phonemes and class draws corresponding number of
spaces on their boards.
Teacher states word, class repeats, segments (tap sounds), and writes words on
white boards.
Review fast/hold sounds for each word after they are written, repeat phonemes and
word as a class.
Repeat process for each of four words on practice page.

BEYOND

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students Performance


Students will partner read 5 sentences, circle words with AU pattern in 1 color
and AW pattern in another color. Students sort and write words from sentences
at the bottom of practice page.
