    PHYS 435/642

    Assignment #3

    Chapter 7
    1) Problems 7.2, 7.9g, and 7.21 of the main text.
    2) An electrical LC circuit is in thermal equilibrium with its surroundings at temperature T.
    Find the high-T mean-square current through the inductor by treating the motion of the
    charge in the circuit as that of a harmonic oscillator.

    Chapter 9
    1) Find the exact value of at which the maximum in Fig. 9.13.1 occurs.
    You need to solve graphically, i.e. numerically, a simple transcedental equation.

    2) Problems 9.2, 9.5 (a)-(d), and 9.16g of the main text.

    Optional. Problems 7.19 (without explicit evaluation of any integral), 9.6, 9.17, 9.26

    N. B. Problem numbers followed by g are compulsory for graduate students, optional for
    undergraduate students.

    Deadline: February 16, 2017
