D.C. named nalist to

host Gay Games in 2022
Organizers of the Gay Games XI competition on
Wednesday named D.C. one of three nalists to
host the event to be held in July 2022.
The other two cities named as nalists were Hong
Kong and Guadalajara, Mexico. The three were
chosen from a group of eight cities that initially bid
on the games.
We are thrilled and honored to have reached
the nal round of this bid process, said Brent
Minor, chair of the Gay Games Washington DC
2022 bid committee. Now, we will intensify our
eorts to bring the games here in 2022. We know
that Washington will be a fantastic host for LGBTQ

Trans activist sues D.C. police

Longtime transgender activist Lourdes Ashley Hunter on Wednesday sued four D.C.
police ocers and the D.C. government in federal court on grounds that the ocers

In a lawsuit led on her behalf by the ACLU of the National Capital Area, Hunter
charges that the ocers actions violated her rights under the Fourth Amendment to
the U.S. Constitution and amounted to a false arrest under the laws of the District of
Columbia.
Ms. Hunter accordingly seeks compensatory and punitive damages from the ocers
and the District, as well as attorneys fees, costs, and other appropriate relief, the
lawsuit states.
Hunter is co-founder and executive director of the Trans Women of Color Collective,
a national group that advocates for transgender rights.
The lawsuit says the alleged improper action by the four police ocers took place on
Nov. 16 while she was hosting a dinner and reception in her apartment for people from
throughout the country who would be attending a White House brieng on transgender
issues the next day.
According to the lawsuit, neighbors in her apartment building came to her door to
complain that her guests were making too much noise. It says Hunter and some of her
guests and the neighbors engaged in a verbal disagreement regarding whether Ms.
Hunter and her guests were in fact being too loud.
A short time later, the lawsuit says, the four police ocers named in the lawsuit
knocked on her apartment door. When Hunter opened the door they said they were
investigating a possible assault, and asked her questions about a possible altercation
with her neighbors, the lawsuit says. At one point, an ocer asked one of the neighbors
who came to the door if he could identify someone who pushed him, the lawsuit says.
He pointed to Ms. Hunter and stated that she had pushed him, the lawsuit says.
Ms. Hunter asked in disbelief, I pushed you? I pushed you? She then began to explain
that there had been no assault and that there had been no excessive noise coming from
her apartment, the lawsuit states.
One of the ocers then entered her apartment, grabbed her by her arm and neck
and placed her under arrest on a charge of assault, according to the lawsuit. It says the
ocers handcued her and escorted her to the courtyard of her building and held her
there for about 45 minutes before taking her to the Third Police District for booking.
An arrest report prepared by one of the ocers said Hunter had been charged with
simple assault and resisting arrest. She was held at the police station from about 11
p.m. on Nov. 16 to 3 a.m. on Nov. 17, just hours before she was scheduled to attend the

Gay man who threatened U.S. senators pleads guilty
A 28-year-old gay man arrested last June at his home in Alexandria, Va., for allegedly
making threats to shoot at least two U.S. senators in the face in a series of Twitter
messages pleaded guilty in December to making interstate threatening communications.
Judge Gerald Bruce Lee of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia
sentenced Kyler George Schmitz to two years of supervised probation and 90 days of
home detention.
The Dec. 21 sentence came after Schmitz accepted a plea bargain oer by prosecutors
that included pleading guilty to one of ve counts in an indictment that charged him
with making an interstate threatening communication.
Prosecutors had asked the judge to sentence Schmitz to six months in prison and a
three-year term of supervised release on probation.
They pointed to one Twitter message that Schmitz sent to a senator, whose identity
has been withheld, saying, Im going to shoot you in the head for allowing someone to
murder my loved ones. In a message to another senator, Schmitz stated, according to
U.S. Capitol Police, I am literally going to buy a gun [and] shoot you in the face [and]
watch your brains splat #BangBangByeBitch.
The government submits that its proposed sentence is appropriate and reasonable
in light of the seriousness of the defendants conduct, the history and characteristics of
the defendant, and the need for a just punishment, Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander
P. Berrang said in sentencing memorandum to the judge.
In a sentencing memo on Schmitzs behalf, defense attorney Geremy Kamens said
Schmitz sent his threatening messages days after he was traumatized over the mass
shooting in Orlando by a gunman who took the lives of 49 mostly LGBT patrons in the
Pulse nightclub. Added Kamens, All of the evidence makes clear that Mr. Schmitz had
no intention of carrying out his threats.

Gay D.C. police union head survives recall vote

Gay D.C. Police Sgt. Matthew Mahl, who
has served as head of the citys police union
since April 1, 2016, narrowly survived an eort
by dissident union members to remove him
from oce in a recall election last week.
Just 982 of the more than 3,600
ocers, detectives, and sergeants that
the union represents turned out to vote
in the recall election, according to a
report on the vote that Mahl posted on
the unions Facebook page.
Among those that voted, 595, or 60 percent,
voted in favor of removing Mahl from oce
while 387, or 39 percent, voted to allow him
to stay in oce for the remainder of his two-
year term, which ends in April 2018. The vote
fell short of a two-thirds, or 66.3 percent,
majority vote needed to remove a union
leader from oce under the unions rules.

A 23-year-old lesbian, who along with her
twin brother completed a one-year jail term
last year for severely beating a gay man in
an anti-gay attack, was returned to jail on
Tuesday by a D.C. Superior Court judge for
violating the terms of her probation.
Judge Patricia A. Broderick revoked
probation for Christina Lucas during a Feb.
28 show-cause hearing on grounds that
Lucas arrest on Sept. 17, 2016 on charges
of obstruction of justice and resisting
arrest and her subsequent guilty plea on
the resisting arrest charge violated the
terms of her probation.
Court records show that the Sept. 17
arrest stemmed from an incident in which
police said she blocked police from entering
a bedroom in a D.C. apartment where her
brother Christopher Lucas was hiding to
avoid arrest on a charge of making threats
to do bodily harm to another person.
Charging documents say Christopher,
the same brother convicted with Christina
Lucas in the anti-gay assault case, climbed
out a window in the bedroom and escaped
arrest due largely to his sisters obstruction
of police from initially entering the
bedroom. Police subsequently found and

vote last week.

The revocation of Christina Lucas
probation this week marked another in
a series of controversial developments
surrounding her and Christopher Lucas
conviction in May 2015 on the felony
oense of hate-related aggravated assault
while armed. The charge was linked to
allegations by police that the two led
a group of others in a vicious beating
of a 29-year-old gay man on a street in
Northwest Washington.
Police and prosecutors said the gay
victim was leaving a party at a friends
house with his mother and a female cousin
in October 2013 when he was approached
by the Lucas siblings and a group of other
people with them. Christina Lucas called
the victim a faggot motherfucker as she,
her brother and the others with them
began to punch him, knocked him down
and stomped him, according to witnesses
who testied at the trial.
A sentencing memorandum submitted
by prosecutors said Christina Lucas sliced
[the victims] face with a sharp object while
he was on the ground. It says it was only
by pure chance that the victim did not die
after being repeatedly and forcefully struck
in the head and upper body. Among other
injuries, he suered several facial fractures
and a possible permanent brain injury,
prosecutors said in the sentencing memo.

Mahl, a 12-year veteran at the D.C.
Metropolitan Police Department, won
election by a 2-to-1 margin in January 2016
as chairman of the Labor Committee of the
Fraternal Order of Police, the ocial name
of the D.C. police union. Mahl served as
acting supervisor and later as supervisor of
the then Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit of the
department from July 2012 to March 2015.
One source familiar with the police union
said the recall vote was largely triggered by
the belief by many ocers that Mahl did
not negotiate a strong enough agreement
providing back pay for ocers required
to work overtime during special police
deployments started by former D.C. Police
Chief Cathy Lanier called All Hands on Deck.
In a court decision handed down before
Mahl became union head a judge ruled
that Lanier and the department violated the
terms of the existing police labor contract by
refusing to provide overtime pay for ocers
assigned to All Hands on Deck duties. The
source familiar with the union, who spoke on
condition of not being identied, said a judge

anti-gay hate crime.
While praising the jury for its decision,
LGBT activists expressed outrage when
the judge presiding over the case, Yvonne
Williams, rejected prosecutors call for a
sentence of between ve and 15 years
of incarceration and instead handed
down a sentence that activists and police
considered lenient.
Williams sentenced the two siblings
to four years in jail but suspended all but
one year. She also placed each of them
on probation for ve years following their
release from jail.
In addition, over the objection of
prosecutors, Williams agreed to a request
by defense attorneys to sentence the two
under the citys Youth Rehabilitation Act,
which allows all records of their conviction
and sentencing to be sealed from the
public view if they successfully complete
the terms of their probation.
And in a development that startled LGBT
activists, Williams said at a follow-up court
hearing that she chose not to hand down an
enhanced sentence under the provisions
of the citys hate crimes law because she
did not believe Christina Lucas, as an out
lesbian, could commit a hate crime against
another gay person. Williams said she also
determined that Christopher Lucas, who
accepted his sister as gay, would not have

ruled that the department must provide
some amount of back pay to ocers forced
to work overtime under the All Hands on
Deck over the past several years.
According to the source, Mahl did all
he could to ght for as much back pay as
possible, but city ocials, including the
mayor and City Council, would not agree to a
sum anywhere near the amount many rank-
and-le union members wanted.
While the All Hands on Deck was one of
the main reasons for the recall, it was only
one part, Mahl told the Washington Blade in
an email message. I also think the manner
in which we communicate and disseminate
information to the members is also a reason,
he said. Its inherently hard to communicate
with the membership as a whole and my
administration has failed on some level to try
and make that better.
Added Mahl: Even though I prevailed,
I realize there are a lot of my members
that I have to recognize and work toward
mending their relationship and trust of
the union and as we enter into contract
negotiations I and my team will be working
hard to do that as well.

28, Judge Broderick agreed to prosecutors
request to revoke Christina Lucas probation
but chose not to follow prosecutors call for

Instead, Broderick sentenced Lucas to
four years in prison but suspended two
years and credited her with already having
served one year. Thus the new sentence
means Lucas must serve one more year
in prison after which she will be placed
on two years of probation, according to
Brodericks sentence.
Broderick also denied a request by the
lead prosecutor in the case, Assistant
U.S. Attorney Veronica Jennings, to
not resentence Lucas under the Youth
Rehabilitation Act. Broderick, saying
she was hopeful that Lucas would be a
candidate for rehabilitation, continued
Lucas sentence under the Youth Act.
The judge also denied a request by
defense attorney Courtney Vaughn
that Lucas be sentenced only to further
probation and no additional jail time.
Christopher Lucas acquittal on the

Trumps speech mixes bleak outlook with populism

President Trumps wide-ranging speech
Tuesday in the House gallery of the U.S.
Capitol drew on many of the positions
he expressed during the presidential
campaign, such as rebuilding Americas
infrastructure, expelling undocumented
immigrants and rebuilding the military. All
those goals stemmed from a perception
largely deemed incorrect or exaggerated
of the failing state of America.
For too long, weve watched our middle
class shrink as weve exported our jobs
and wealth to foreign countries, Trump
said. Weve nanced and built one global
project after another, but ignored the
fates of our children in the inner cities
of Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit and so
many other places throughout our land.
Weve defended the borders of other
nations, while leaving our own borders
wide open, for anyone to cross and for
drugs to pour in at a now unprecedented
rate. And weve spent trillions of dollars
overseas, while our infrastructure at
home has so badly crumbled.
But thats about to change, Trump
said, because last year the earth shifted
beneath our feet with a rebellion that
led to his election thatwill fundamentally
change America for the better.
The chorus became an earthquake
and the people turned out by the tens
of millions, and they were all united by
one very simple, but crucial demand, that
America must put its own citizens rst
because only then, can we truly make
American great again, Trump said.
Trumps speech consisted of a litany of
his proposals, such as building a wall on
the U.S.-Mexico border, tax reform and
new taris on foreign imports. Amid the
perception Republican eorts to undo
Obamacare have petered out, Trump
renewed his call to repeal and replace
health care reform, but with a plan he
says will expand access to health care
by allowing the purchase of plans across
state lines, instituting tax credits and
expanding health savings accounts. (Many
LGBT advocates have sought to preserve
Obamacare, among other reasons, because
it contains non-discrimination protections
for LGBT people in health care.)
Perhaps in an attempt to temper
opposition to his presidency, Trump drew
heavily on populist rhetoric, saying the nation
would move toward the principle of Buy
American, and Hire American as he urged
Congress to pass legislation that would repair
and expand the nations infrastructure.
My administration wants to work
with members in both parties to make
childcare accessible and aordable,
to help ensure new parents have paid
family leave, to invest in womens health,
and to promote clean air and clear water,
and to rebuild our military and our
infrastructure, Trump said.
Trumps words in favor of expanding
infrastructure and manufacturing in the
United States, such as his commitment
to build future pipelines with American
steel, were among the few lines
during the speech that got Democratic
lawmakers to rise from their seats and

It is not compassionate, but reckless,
to allow uncontrolled entry from places
where proper vetting cannot occur,

honor of admission to the United States
should support this country and love its
people and its values. We cannot allow
a beachhead of terrorism to form inside

become a sanctuary for extremists.

Amid renewed concerns President Trump
would sign a religious order undermining
LGBT rights, White House Press Secretary
Sean Spicer said Monday he expects the
administration would soon have something.
Spicer made the remarks in response to a
question from the Daily Signal, an arm of the
anti-LGBT Heritage Foundation, on whether
the order is still coming and whether
it would extend beyond the Johnson
Amendment, a law Trump has pledged
to repeal barring churches from making
political endorsements.
I think weve discussed executive orders
in the past, and for the most part, were not
going to get into discussing what may or
may not come until were ready to announce
it, Spicer replied. So, Im sure as we move
forward well have something.
It wasnt immediately clear whether the

Perez elected DNC chair
Tom Perez won Saturday a highly competitive race to become the next chair of the
Democratic National Committee, narrowly defeating his competitor Rep. Keith Ellison
(D-Minn.).
After two ballots were cast during the DNC winter meeting in Atlanta, Donna Brazile,
who had been serving as interim chair, announced the former labor secretaryhad won
234votes compared to the 200 obtained by Ellison. A total of 218 votes were needed
to win.
Upon his election, Perez delivered an impassioned speech urging Democrats to come
together to win elections, defy President Trump and ensure hes a one-term president.
Someday, theyre going to study this era in America history and theyre going to study
it alongside the Know-Nothing movement, and theyre going to ask the question of all of

The 447 members of the Democratic National Committee decided on Perez as
chair after they failed to choose a new leader on the rst ballot. Perez came up short
with 213.5 votes and Ellison had 200. After the rst ballot, Wisconsin attorney Peter
Packarsky dropped out of the race and endorsed Ellison, but the DNCselectedPerez

When Perez was declared the winner, New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray
Buckley called for a suspension of the rules to elect unanimously Perez as chair. In

Court rules for Evanchos trans sister
A federal district court ruled Monday in favor of the transgender sister of the singer
who performed at President Trumps inaugural festivities seeking to use the bathroom
at her Pennsylvania school consistent with her gender identity but not on the same
terms as the contention in similar litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In a 48-page decision, U.S. District Judge Mark Hornak issued a preliminary injunction
in favor of Juliet Evancho the sister of Jackie Evancho and Elissa Ridenour, who are
both transgender females, as well as another transgender male plainti identied as
A.S.
The Plaintis appear to the Court to be young people seeking to do what young
people try to do every day-go to school, obtain an education, and interact as equals with
their peers, Hornak writes.
Although Pine-Richland High School in Pennsylvania initially allowed Evancho and her
fellow plaintis to use the restroom consistent with their gender identity, the school
was forced to change its policy in September after the board, under pressure from
anti-LGBT groups, enacted Resolution 2, which requires students to either use facilities
corresponding to their biological sex or unisex facilities.
In October 2016, Lambda Legal led the lawsuit against Pine-Richland High School
over the change in policy on the basis it discriminates against the plaintis under the
14th Amendment and Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments on the basis of sex.
Joining Lambda in ling the lawsuit were Tracie Palmer and David C. Williams with Kline
& Specter P.C.
The court, which suspended enforcement of Resolution 2 as the case continues
through the court, also denied the Pine-Richland School Districts request to dismiss
the case.

Trans student alleges abuse by Botswana police
A student at the University of Botswana is demanding legal action following an
alleged sexual violation and humiliation by police ocers in Gaborone that left her
feeling powerless.
Having been apprehended on the school campus and taken into custody at the Central
Police Station in the nations capital, Kesaobaka Kemotlhales unnerving account of the
treatment she said she received at the station made national news earlier this month.
I realized I forgot my medication. I went to the security ocers by the main gate to
seek permission but instead of helping me they called me derogatory names recounted
the second year special education and science student who identies as transgender.
After she received permission to access her dormitory, charging documents indicate
Kemotlhale was taken into custody under allegations of stealing a blue overall suit
valued at P200 ($20) being the property of the University of Botswana.
The campus had been evacuated by Botswana Police Services at the time due to
violent student actions against security services, which were aggravated by a dispute
over living allowances provided by the Botswana government.
While being processed at the police station, Kemotlhale says the female ocer
preparing the paperwork referred to me as she without even asking. She further
alleges that when she was due to be taken to a holding cell, some male ocers who
couldnt believe her gender identity as attested to by their counterpart took her into
the restroom where they proceeded to forcibly strip and grope her.
I just stood there while they touched and violated me, and there was nothing I can
do. she said. Following this, the ocers conrmed that I was a she and can be taken
to the female cell.
As a result of being restricted from taking her medication while in police custody,
Kemotlhale reportedly fainted and was hospitalized upon her release.
Her lawyer, Kago Mokotedi, on Feb. 13 appeared in court with her and a fellow student
facing the allegations of stealing with her after they had been granted a collective bail
of P1000 ($96.44).
Mokotedi has said the matter of the sexual harassment is a human rights issue and
will be dealt with as such with him seeking to enlist the assistance of local human rights
organizations such as Ditshwanelo. Central Police Station Cmdr. Vincent Pitsietsile too
disclosed that an internal investigation will be conducted by an ocer from a separate
station in order to maintain impartiality and transparency though he could not oer
more details as the case is still ongoing.
Trans persons have no explicit legal protections in Botswana, with the exception of
the Employment Act that prohibits workplace discrimination based on gender identity
and sexual orientation.
Kemotlhales case will, perhaps, garner more national attention as she is an outspoken
advocate for trans visibility through her work as a model, designer and actress. She
is currently featuring on Ntwakgolo, a locally produced TV drama that is broadcast
internationally.
In response to comments on the Facebook post which publicized her story, Kemotlhale
not only stood up to those who continue to ridicule her and other openly trans people in
Botswana, but consoled her supporters in saying, Im not going to throw a pity party. I
have to focus on my future, career and solutions. She is poised to join the ranks of Ricki
Kgositau and Skipper Mogami as an outspoken advocate for trans rights, visibility and
education in Botswana.

State Dept. supports probe of El Salvador trans murders
A State Department spokesperson on Friday said it supports the investigation into
the recent murders of three trans women in El Salvador.
The spokesperson told the Washington Blade the State Department cannot specically
comment on an ongoing investigation. The spokesperson then oered our sincerest
condolences to the friends and family of the transgender women who have recently
been murdered.
Three transgender women have been killed in San Luis Talpa, a municipality in La
Paz Department that is roughly 25 miles southeast of the Salvadoran capital of San
Salvador, since Feb. 18. Shawn Gaylord of Human Rights First on Thursday said in a
statement that the murders are just one example of the extreme violence, homophobia
and transphobia that is prevalent in the country.
The United States should promptly condemn these acts of violence and press the
Salvadoran government to thoroughly investigate these incidents, he added.
Reports indicate other LGBT Salvadorans may have been killed in recent days.
Ana Isabel Nieto, coordinator of El Salvadors Ministry of Healths National HIV/AIDS/
STI Program (CONASIDA), in a broadly worded press release that her oce released on
Thursday expressed concern over the acts of violence against the LGBTI population.
The National Civic Police described the two trans women who were killed in San Luis
Talca on Feb. 18 as men who were wearing womens clothes. Nieto in her statement did
not describe their murders as hate crimes.
We understand that El Salvadors National Civilian Police (PNC) and the Attorney
Generals Oce are fully engaged in this case, and other human rights entities are
closely monitoring the developments, the State Department spokesperson told the
Blade. The United States supports the search for those responsible in all cases of crime
and violence, including those where human rights may have been violated.
El Salvador, which borders Guatemala and Honduras, has one of the worlds highest
murder rates. Rampant homophobia, transphobia, discrimination and poverty are
among the factors that have made lesbian, gay, bisexual and especially trans Salvadorans
particularly vulnerable to violence.
Karla Guevara, director of Colectivo Alejandra, a trans advocacy group, told the Blade
earlier this month during an interview at her San Salvador oce an average of 16 trans
people are killed in El Salvador each year.
Francela Mndez, a prominent trans rights activist who was a Colectivo Alejandra
board member, was killed in May 2015 while she was visiting a friends home in the city

There is always this hate is how these trans women were murdered, Guevara told
the Blade.
Bryam Rodrguez of the San Salvador-based Generacin de Hombres Trans de El
Salvador told the Blade on Friday that his organization is outraged by incidents of
discrimination, violence and principally the reported and unreported hate crimes that
are taking place in the area of San Luis Talpa.
There is no doubt that the actions committed by these criminals are promoted by
transphobia, machismo and the governments lack of interest (in urging) the police to
conduct an exhaustive investigation to nd those responsible and punish them for their
acts, added Rodrguez.

Cancer care lacking for LGB patients: study
BOSTON LGB people tend to report poorer experiences as cancer patients
than straights, Medical Xpress reports.
Conducting a secondary analysis of a 2013 U.K. National Cancer Patient
Experience Survey, Richard Neal of the University of Leeds, a U.K. school, found
that LGB respondents reported poorer care, less involvement in treatment decision
making and the suitability of information resources, Medical Xpress reports.
Bisexual respondents particularly found it dicult to contact their dedicated
nurse specialists and to get understandable answers from them. They reported that
they were dissatised with their interaction with nurses on hospital wards and the
care and help provided by both health and social care services after leaving hospital,

professionals must try to provide a good experience as possible for all patients,
particular attention should be paid to the specic needs of gay, lesbian and
bisexual patients. The ndings of this research also direct health professionals
as to how they may best do this.
A worrying picture of social isolation was also painted through the ndings,
researchers said.
A higher proportion of LGB respondents said that either no family or friends
were involved, or that that they did not want their family or friends involved in
their cancer care experience, compared with heterosexual respondents.
This could be a deliberate strategy to protect family and friends from negative
consequences of continued homophobia and discrimination, the researchers
said. It is possible that choosing to exclude their loved ones is regarded by the
patient as a safer option, Medical Xpress reports.
Texas bill to address trans health shortcomings
AUSTIN, Texas A bill that has been led in Texas is designed to address
problems transgender people have in receiving acceptable health care, My
Statesmen, a central Texas news agency, reports.
House Bill 943, introduced by Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin), a former nurse,
would establish a statewide Transgender Health Care Advisory Committee
comprised of 15 people from LGBT rights groups, representatives from public
universities and physicians with experience working with transgender people,
the Statesman reports.
The committee would be the rst of its kind to advise state ocials on
transgender health care, and recommendations could lead to enacting
continuing education programs for doctors.The committee would submit a
report to Gov. Greg Abbott and other state ocials by Aug. 31, 2018.
There are currently 58 health care-related advisory committees that fall
under the Texas Health and Human Services System. Committees provide
state ocials guidance, and agency sta are present in many meetings to take
recommendations into consideration, according to Health and Human Services
Commission spokeswoman Christine Mann, the Statesman reports.
The idea for HB 943 followed conversations between members of LGBT
advocacy groups and Howards sta, who heard stories of transgender men and
women being turned away for common problems such as abdominal pain
because of a lack of knowledge of the patients full history.
In Texas, 30 percent of transgender people reported having at least one negative
experience related to their gender identity when seeking health care services in
the past year. This includes being verbally or physically harassed, assaulted or
even being refused treatment altogether, according to results from a national
survey released last month from the National Center for Transgender Equality.
The survey, which polled 1,490 transgender Texans and 27,715 people across
the country, found that 22 percent of Texas respondents reported they declined
to seek a physician when they were in need of services out of fear of being
turned away or not receiving quality health care services because of their gender
identity, My Statesman reports.

Twist and shout The forgotten movement pattern in the weight room is
the twist. Even when doing functional exercises without any machines involved,
we tend to move the body front to back and sometimes side to side, but very
rarely do we twist. The body moves in three planes, frontal (side to side), sagittal
(front to back) and transverse (twisting). Though we think of it less, twisting
is actually the most important movement we do because it encompasses the
other two and is critical for creating power through our core. Its essential that

It is now clear that Donald Trump is
totally unprepared and is totally over-
whelmed in the oce of president. He
clearly had no idea what was expected
of the president of the United States and
now has no clue how to handle it. Instead,
he continues to do what he is comfortable
with campaigning. He cant move on.
He obviously believed, as did many
who voted for him, that his business ex-
perience as CEO of a privately owned
company would put him in good stead
to handle the job. Instead it is leading to
an incredible number of missteps and
putting individuals and the nation at risk.
Unless he can grasp the reality of the job
and step up to it; he will lead us into an
unintended global crisis or even war.
In addition to being unprepared, Trump
has proven to be a congenital liar. He lies
about the most mundane things that have
no impact on anything. He is a narcissist
and thin-skinned leading him to insist,
even against veriable facts, that he is al-
ways the best at everything and the most
admired. Lying about long lines outside of
CPAC waiting to get into his speech when
there werent any; about how many peo-
ple were at his inauguration when there
were photos; the size of his Electoral Col-
lege win; and his impact on the decrease
in the national debt in the month he has
been president, which he misinterpreted
from a Fox News report. All things mean-
ing nothing in the broad scope of his presi-
dency and lying about them only makes
him look worse, which leads to more lies
and his calling out the press for challeng-
ing his lies. It is a vicious cycle.
His habit of tweeting each morning also
leads to problems. Some think it may be
a way to get people to talk about some-

thing other than the mistakes his admin-
istration is making. But what he tweets
often makes him look less intelligent and
adds to the skepticism of his ability to
do the job. Silly things like calling Meryl
Streep an overrated actress, or tweeting
about the Democratic National Commit-
tee, are issues the president of the United
States should be too busy to worry about.
In the rst 30 days he has managed to
anger the governments of Britain, Austra-
lia, Mexico, Canada and all our NATO al-
lies to name just a few. Even when work-
ing closely with Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu, he cant stop him-
self from throwing out a random com-
ment during the press conference about
not building new settlements. He clearly
has no idea how diplomacy works. He
has named fewer people to positions that
need Senate conrmation at this point in
his administration than nearly any presi-
dent before him and complains hes wait-
ing longer than any president to have his
Cabinet conrmed; another veriable lie.
I believe he thought the presidency com-
pared to the role of CEO. You hired people
and gave them instructions; they carried
them out and then came back to report the
results. You occasionally negotiated some-
thing at the highest level with another CEO
and could come to an agreement without
consulting others. If the whole deal ended
in disaster you could declare bankruptcy,
which Trump did ve times, and begin again.
In the meantime you had time for dinner out
with friends and weekends in Florida and as
much time on the golf course as you liked. It
was a good life with all the women he want-
ed; something he himself said.
Instead, he is nding so many things he
has asked his people to do have come back
screwed up or undone and landed back on
his desk. Things he doesnt understand.
He had a Cabinet appointee withdraw and
had to re his National Security Adviser.
His communications people arent getting
it right the way he wants so he contradicts
them in tweets and then is shocked at the
resulting confusion. He cant just head out
to dinner whenever he likes and when in
Florida nds himself with meetings and
decisions that follow him there.
If he continues in this vein he may well
get in enough trouble, even with this Re-
publican Congress, that he wont nish out
this term. In any event many of the prom-
ises he made to get elected will go unful-
lled so even those who voted for him will
conclude the Emperor has no clothes.

Let me start by saying I do not stand in
judgement of you or your conservative val-
ues, such as they are. Though I am an un-
abashed liberal I have always thought that
conservatism serves an important purpose
as a moderating, albeit non-obstructive,
voice on the road to progress. As a millen-
nial, I came of age during the 2000 election.
It was close and contentious, not to men-
tion stolen by the Supreme Court, but ulti-
mately civil. I look back fondly on a time in
U.S. politics when civil discourse could be
had across party lines and at the end of the
day we could all go home without any sig-
nicant bruises.
It is within this spirit of bipartisan com-
munication that I speak to you now. You
are ghting a losing battle and splintering
the resistance to Trumps hateful agenda in
the process. Your continued support of the
Republican Party and its current platform,
the most anti-gay in history, is self-defeat-
ing as gay Americans and as a gay Ameri-
can on the other side of the aisle I am not

I am an American Muslim veteran. I was
raised in America, and I joined ROTC (the
Reserve Ocer Training Corps) while in col-
lege. I followed in the footsteps of genera-
tions of men in my family who have served
proudly and with distinction in the military.
Many of my family members served in the
Pakistani military and were immensely
proud of me when I commissioned in the
U.S. Air Force. Loyalty to country and re-
spect for the armed forces is a part of my
familys heritage. Upon joining the military, I
was proud to ght under the ag of a coun-
try that is a defender of religious freedom.
I separated from the military while
Obama was still president, and while I did
not agree with all of his policies, I had deep
respect for him as my commander in chief.
Like many of my friends, I was shocked
when Donald Trump won the election. The
situation became even more surreal when
he issued the Muslim ban. Like so many
others, I was in disbelief and shock.

BTQ community with you than without you.
It occurs to me that you might mention
that Trump has spoken positively about
the rights of LGBTQ individuals in the past
and I know youre clinging to his words like
a piece of debris in the middle of a hurri-
cane but let me remind you that Trump has
been on both sides of many issues over the
course of a few short months. He is unprin-
cipled and driven only by his never-ending
search for power, personal gain and admi-

even if you took Trump at his ckle word,
hes not the one who ultimately decides
whether our rights as gay Americans are
protected. Thats up to the Supreme Court
and his current nominee, Neil Gorsuch, has
voiced disturbing views on the rights of our
community in the past. Views that are very

ed our American values. The rights I fought
for in the military are now being denied to
so many. While I and other American Mus-
limsare (for now, at least) free to come and
go if I didnt have U.S. citizenship, I would
very likely be aected by the ban as well. It
is just this thin wall that stands between me
and the fate of others who were stranded
at airports around the world.

continue to support them?
It is my best guess that during your pe-
riod of self-reection during the election
when you were pondering your continued
loyalty to your party you made the calcula-
tion, hopefully not consciously, that your
identity as a white man/woman or as a per-
son of wealth is more valuable than your
identity as a homosexual.
No other excuse could explain why you
are currently in support of a party that does
not value you as equals and would, and
very well may, strip you of your most basic
the hands of a reactionary man unwilling
to accept expert advice from those around
him frightens me. It disturbs me that
Trump will direct our military, my military
that I am at heart, a part of. Ive served un-
der multiple presidents, and while I havent
felt strong support for all of them, Ive al-
ways had the utmost respect for them all
and have been proud to serve under them.
This assault on our national values
makes me feel slightly guilty for my un-
yielding patriotism. How strange is it to feel
an unwavering allegiance to a country that
has taken such actions against others of my
faith a country where freedom to worship
is supposed to be an unalienable right?
Despite everything, this hasnt and wont
shake my patriotism. That is because I know
the catalyst for these events is the election
of a man unt to run a country, and I will
not let him aect my loyalty to America.
Therefore, the recent Muslim ban pro-
test in front of the White House hit even
closer to home for me than some of the
other protests this year. Seeing the diver-
sity in the crowd made me ercely proud
that people of so many dierent back-
grounds and races cared deeply about
this issue. As both a veteran and a citizen,

protections as Americans at its rst oppor-
tunity. And to be honest, I cant say I blame
you. As a gay black man, Im uniquely low
on the demographic hierarchy this country
has established. When I get jumped in the
street I must stop and actively wonder to
myself which part of my identity is under
attack before I ll out the hate crime form
in my head. Being white and or wealthy
doesnt make you a better or more valuable
person but it is undoubtedly an easier way
to live life in the U.S. than as either gay or
a minority.
You were born to belong to a much older
community than that of the GOP. One that
will be around long after something else
replaces Republicans and Democrats and
because of that it is important that you
take this opportunity to stand on the right
side of history. Reject party over country
politics and stand with your gay, trans and
questioning brothers and sisters and resist
Trump! Everyone has something to lose in
Trumps America. I understand that you
may disagree with that but you cant pos-
sibly disagree that as a gay American, if the
worst-case scenario takes place, few have
more to lose than you.

fellow Americans stand up for our human
rights, just as I and my military colleagues
had fought for theirs.
Despite the sad and disturbing circum-
stances prompting the need for this pro-
test, the crowd had an unexpected posi-
tive energy and vibe. The people will not
lose their conviction, even in the face of a
tyrannical president trying to change a na-
tion that has historically sought truth and

Being at the protest and watching the
crowds fervor and zeal provided a massive
shot of encouragement to me. It made me
believe that no matter what this adminis-
tration may throw our way, the resistance
will not lose hope, and will not back down.
The thrilling decision to halt the Muslim ban
that has come through the courts is indeed
promising for the future of our country. I
believe the checks and balances that sup-
port our democracy, and the freedom to
protest that undergird it, will keep us going
in the face of injustice.

A Pew Research survey last week detailed
this internal dichotomy for Democrats, with
party loyalists essentially split on whether to
pursue a more measured political posture or

remain on the path of an extremist and losing
hyper-liberal stance.
Democrats have been reduced to control-
ling a trifecta of state government bicam-
eral legislatures and governorships in only
six states, three on each coast. The party clung
to one-vote state senate control in a Delaware
special election last weekend, holding on to a
district long dominated by the party.
Perez himself recounted in an interview
Tuesday morning on MSNBCs Morning Joe
program a recent encounter with a longtime
Democrat in Wisconsin. The voter, who had
switched sides to support Trump, told Perez
that he has begun to feel homeless as a par-
ty supporter, saying Democrats didnt seem to
care about him anymore.
The new party chairman seemed oddly and
blithely unaware of the message at the core of
the self-reported exchange. Perez instead be-
gan reeling o by rote the talking points that
are the losing message Democrats just cant
stop repeating.
If Democrats hope to recover and, in the
words of the non-politician who won the
White House, start winning again, party lead-
ers need to start listening to that voter in Wis-
consin who is no longer with them instead of
simply shouting louder.
Its a lesson Democrats have yet to learn.

By now, everyone knows what
happened at the Oscars on Sunday night.
Due to an embarrassing gae by PwC,
the accounting rm formerly known as
Price Waterhouse Cooper, Faye Dunaway
mistakenly announced that La La Land
had been awarded the Academy Award
for Best Picture.
With class, when the slip-up was
discovered La La Land producer
Jordan Horowitz stopped the acceptance
speeches and told the Moonlight team
that they had really been named Best
Picture. Chaos ensued.
What most people missed, however,
was the way the stage transformed during
the confusion. The largely white, mainly
male, presumably straight creative and
production team of La La Land faded
away and was replaced by the amazing
rainbow crew behind Moonlight. The
stage became a model for diversity and
inclusion that should serve as a model for
future Academy Awards ceremonies.
To take it a step further, a movie that
erased the existence of LGBT people in
Los Angeles and positioned a white man
as a savior of jazz and a black man as the
slick performer/producer/promoter who
tries to steer him away from his sacred
mission, was replaced in the spotlight
and the history books by a movie that
celebrated the life of a gay African-
American man who triumphs against the
odds on his journey of coming out and
coming of age.
It was a neat reversal of the Oscars
broadcast of March 2006 when Crash,
another self-congratulatory lm about Los
Angeles that denied the existence of LGBT
people, was awarded the Best Picture
Oscar instead of the groundbreaking
queer lm Brokeback Mountain.
The Best Picture category at the Oscars
has had a fraught relationship with queer
material for more than 50 years. Starting
in the 1940s, lms with coded LGBT
characters and censored LGBT material
were Oscar favorites. Alfred Hitchcocks
Rebecca, with Judith Andersons in 1985. While the sexual politics of both
magisterial performance as the repressed
Mrs. Danvers, won the Best Picture Oscar
in 1941. Anderson won as well.
Two heavily censored Tennessee
Williams adaptations were nominated for
Best Picture: A Streetcar Named Desire
in 1952 and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in
1959. The Cat script was so severely
altered that Williams did not even receive
screenplay credit.
More recently, in The Color Purple,
nominated in 1986, Steven Spielberg
removed all traces of lesbian activity from
the lm. In A Beautiful Mind, the biopic
about mathematician John Nash that won
Best Picture in 2002, the lmmakers did
not mention Nashs bisexuality.
In the late 1960s, Hollywood
started to irt with direct mentions of
homosexuality. The Lion in Winter
(nominated in 1969) mentions an aair
between Richard the Lion-Hearted and
King Philip II of France (played by rising
stars Anthony Hopkins and Timothy
Dalton). Midnight Cowboy (1970)
featured the homoerotic relationship
between Ratso (Dustin Homan) and
hustler Joe Buck (Jon Voight) and included
a number of gay men among Bucks
clientele. In Cabaret, nominated in 1973,
Michael York reveals that his character
has slept with another man.
Queer material assumed a more
central role in two movies in the following
decades. Trans issues were featured in
the controversial Dog Day Afternoon
(nominated in 1976). William Hurt won an
Oscar for playing a gay prisoner in Kiss of
the Spider Woman which was nominated
movies are somewhat suspect today,
they were groundbreaking at the time.
With its depiction of the trans serial killer
Bualo Bill, The Silence of the Lambs,
which won multiple Oscars including Best
Picture in 1992, was seen as a setback for
queer representation in the movies. This
was echoed in American Beauty, Best
Picture winner in 2000, with its depiction
of an abusive closeted gay character.
Things improved over the following
decade. A number of lms with
sympathetic depictions of queer
characters were nominated for Best
Picture. These included: The Crying
Game (1993), Four Weddings and a
Funeral (1995), The Full Monty (1998)
and The Hours (2003). The Academy did
cause some controversy in 1993 when
actor Jaye Davidson was nominated in
the Best Supporting Actor category for
playing a male-to-female trans character.
The relationship between the Best
Picture Oscar and the LGBT community
underwent a seismic shift in 2006. Two
queer lms received multiple awards and
nominations: Capote and Brokeback
Mountain. In a disappointing upset,
Crash was awarded the Best Picture
Oscar instead of Brokeback Mountain.
Things improved again in the
intervening decade when several lms
with prominent and well-rounded
depictions of LGBT characters were
nominated for Best Picture: Little Miss
Sunshine (2006 nomination), Milk
(2008), The Kids Are All Right (2011), The
Dallas Buyers Club (2014), Philomena
(2014) and The Imitation Game (2015).
The 88th annual Academy Awards in
2016 were once again a disappointment
for the LGBT community. Two outstanding
lms with impeccable queer credentials,
Carol and The Danish Girl were not
nominated in the Best Picture category.
Despite four nominations, The Danish
Girl only took home a Supporting Actress
Oscar for Alicia Vikander. Despite six
nominations, Carol left empty-handed.
Queer lm had been well and truly
snubbed by the Oscars.
To the Academys credit, this changed
during the 2017 ceremony when
Moonlight nally broke the Oscars
rainbow ceiling and took home the statue
for Best Picture (along with wins for
supporting actor Mahershala Ali and writers
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney).
While La La Land had some ne
moments (the opening number Another
Day is a cinematic masterpiece), the
Academy deserves signicant praise for
breaking with tradition and recognizing
Moonlight as Best Picture instead.
Its a historic move that shows that
the tone-deaf days of #OscarSoWhite
#OscarSoMale #OscarSoStraight could
nally be on their way out.
May the rainbow crew of Moonlight
be a beacon for Hollywoods future.

Wearing ties daily to work. They serve no
purpose and should be saved for special

but I would like to conduct a Carnegie
Hall concert at some point in my career.

I wish I had realized the importance
of schmoozing in my career and the
importance of not being afraid to toot
your own horn sometimes.

It was politics and the study of law
that initially drew me to Washington
in the late 1980s, but it has been the
performing arts that has kept me here
and nurtured me in Washington for the
past 30 years. Wow! I cant believe it has
been three decades!

The new release schedule is light on
megastars but heavy on new oerings
by some of our most acclaimed musical
artists. The details for most of the higher-
prole new albums expected in 2017
have yet to be announced, but there is
still a strong slate of new music coming
our way over the new few months.
March starts o with the much-
anticipated second album by English
star Ed Sheeran, whose (pronounced
divide) hits Friday, March 3. Also slated
for release are the latest ambitious
concept album by openly gay troubadour
Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic
Fields 50 Song Memoir.
Four of indie-pops most popular bands
have new oerings on the way: the Shins on
March 10 with Heartworms, then Spoon a
week later with Hot Thoughts, and Real
Estate unveils In Mind, the follow-up to
their much-lauded 2014 release Atlas.
Conor Oberst and his Salutations adds
to the indie onslaught, sure to be a big
weekend at area record stores.
Also due on March 17 is the 14th studio
album by veteran alternative synthpop
titans Depeche Mode, Spirit. Capital
Pride veteran Betty Who unleashes The
Valley on March 24. That same week
comes Damage and Joy, the rst new
album by seminal alt-rockers Jesus &
Mary Chain in 18 years.
March 25 brings the second solo album
by Ladytron vocalist Marnie, Strange
Words and Weird Wars. We can expect
more glistening dance-pop as Goldfrapp
oers their rst album in four years,
Silver Eye, on March 31. The same day
the great Aimee Mann returns with her
long-awaited new album, Mental Illness,
the rst release in ve years for the gifted
singer, songwriter and musician.
March is also highlighted by new
albums from British boy band Take That,
the always-funky Jamiroquai, Canadian
dance/pop singer Nelly Furtado, a three-
disc set of American standards by the one
and only Bob Dylan, the latest by rapper
Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, and the
much-anticipated new album by British
up-and-comer Tinie Tempah.
April 7 will be a big day for indie-rock
fans as new albums by Father John
Misty, the New Pornographers and
Cold War Kids all arrive. The same day
brings Future Islands, who will follow-up
their synth pop classic, 2014s Singles,
with The Far Field. Electronica will also
be well-represented as EDM duo the
Chainsmokers, known for their smash
#SELFIE, release their debut album
Memories Do Not Open, and the
self-titled third album by openly gay
Venezuelan DJ and electro-wizard Arca
will also hit retailers.
The rst new solo release by pop singer
Michelle Branch in 14 years, Hopeless
Romantic, also hits on April 7. So does
the self-titled debut album by Nancy and
Beth, a duo featuring Megan Mullally
(Karen from Will & Grace) and Austin-
based musician Stephanie Hunt.
On April 14, the freakishly talented
Norwegian artist Sondre Lerche is back
with his eighth album, Pleasure. The
following week brings legendary crooner
Barry Manilow and This is My Town,
his rst new album since he married his
longtime partner in 2015.
Acclaimed Danish dream-rockers Mew,
featuring the solemnly beautiful vocals of
the incredible Jonas Bjerre, return on
April 28 with Visuals. Also expected in
April are new albums by the dynamic pop
singer Bebe Rexha, veteran hard-rockers
Incubus, and British post-punk revivalists
Maxmo Park.
The biggest event in April, of course, is
the 10th annual Record Store Day held on
Saturday, April 22. St. Vincent has been
named Record Store Day Ambassador.
Given the big anniversary and the meager
and lackluster selection for the Black
Friday Record Store Day last November,
this years roster of new releases and
exclusives is reportedly jammed with
outstanding titles that could include
well, anything really. It shouldnt be long
before the list of Record Store Day titles
starts leaking to the public, so keep your
eyes peeled.
May kicks o with Rock and Roll Hall
of Famers Blondie returning with their
rst album in three years with Pollinator
on May 5. Queer-punk duo PWR BTTM
unleashes their utterly distinct sound and
vibe with their second album, Pageant,
on May 12. Also on the 12th is the latest
oering by the massively successful
country-rock hybrid Zac Brown Band,
Welcome Home. May 19 will be exciting
for fans of electronic dance-pop, as the
legendary duo Erasure, featuring the
always-amazing vocals by gay pop icon
Andy Bell and the electronic mastery
of his longtime musical partner Vince
Clarke, return with their 17th album,
World Be Gone. It sounds like the album
might be unusually political the press
release states the UK duo gives the
world and recent political upheavals a
thoughtful examination.
It may not be Fleetwood Mac, but
Buckingham/McVie will be as close as
you can get without Stevie Nicks. Their
new album, the rst ever from Lindsey
Buckingham and Christine McVie as a
duo (albeit backed by Mick Fleetwood
and John McVie), is scheduled for May,
but a rm release date has not yet been
announced. Also expected in May is
Binary, the latest from the independent
folk-rock icon Ani DiFranco.
Stretching into June, the big release
early in the month is the latest from
country titans Lady Antebellum, Heart
Break, which is set for June 9. There are
a few big-name artists who had been
expected to unveil new albums this spring
but have yet to announce release dates,
so at this point a spring release date
could still be possible but some will not
doubt stretch into the summer: Sheryl
Crow, Lorde, Drake, Charli XCX, Katy
Perry, St. Vincent, Beck, Christina
Aguilera, Gorillaz, Kanye West and
Kelly Clarkson, among others.
And then there are always surprises.
Bruce Springsteen has been sitting on a
nished new studio album for a year and
could drop it at any time. In this era of
surprise and sudden releases instead of
the traditional build-up, who knows what
great new music might unexpectedly
come our way this spring.

The National Building Museum

The spring theater season is heavy on
classics and musicals with a peppering
of exciting new works. But a common
thread throughout many of the upcoming
productions is input from LGBT talent.
Peter and the Starcatcher a
grownup prequel to the Peter Pan story is
playing at Constellation Theatre through
March 12. With all the familiar references
pirates, lost boys, spectacular
mermaids and a crocodile Rick Elices
play with music and movement makes
for an imaginative, fun romp. Staged
by Kathryn Chase Bryer, Constellations
production features a pleasing ensemble
including Dallas Tolentino in the title role.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company
has extended its stellar production of
young British playwright Mike Bartletts
King Charles III through March 18.
What happens when Queen Elizabeth
dies and Charles takes over? Bartlett
has a few ideas. Later this season, the
company presents Tony Award-winning
playwright David Ives The School for Lies
(May 30-June 2) based on Molires The
Misanthrope. This update on the French
comic masterpiece will be staged by STCs
out artistic director Michael Kahn.
At Olney Theatre Center, out actor Chris
Dinolfo is playing in the new comedy A
Fancy French Farce (through March 26),
Meg Miroshniks adaptation of the 18th

During the 1960s, Mrs. Miller found a
following and put out some albums with
covers of pop hits including Downtown,
Monday, Monday, A Hard Days Night, talented Fords vets including Felicia
which are included in the new musical.
Also at Signature, out director Matthew
Gardiner is helming the world premiere
production of Midwestern Gothic
(March 14-April 30), a thriller with a
musical twist by Royce Vavrek and Josh
Schmidt. The cast includes Signature
regulars Bobby Smith, Evan Casey and

At Studio Theatre, Jackson Gay is
directing Anton Chekhovs tragicomic
masterpiece Three Sisters (March
8-April 23). Siblings Irina, Masha, Olga

Arena Stages impressive season
continues with Lorraine Hansberrys
classic A Raisin in the Sun (March
31-May 7). The 1959 drama follows
the aspirations of an African-American
family seeking a better life away from
their cramped apartment on Chicagos
Southside. Some of their dreams are
realized while others are deferred.
After Hansberrys premature death
from cancer at 34, a cache of letters
were found indicating that the African-
American playwright, though married to
a man, identied as gay. The cast features

At the Kennedy Center, pop star Brandy
is slated to play jilted killer Roxie Hart in
Chicago (April 4-16). With a legendary
book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music
by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb,
the 1920s Chicago-set musical puts the
spotlight on jazz, mobsters, murder and
public relations. Brandys rst played Hart
two years for a limited Broadway run.

Duy Adams madcap comedy Or, (April
12-May 7). Inspired by Restoration comedy,
its the wild story of up-and-coming

In April, out actor Jaysen Wright
makes his Arena Stage debut in Smart

a D.C. native, plays Jackson Moore, an
African-American surgical resident at

ambitious? Not for Tom Atwood, who has
done just that with his breathtaking photo
series, Tom Atwood: Kings & Queens

Atwoods monumental project, which has
been named the most comprehensive
LGBT photo series ever conducted in
the U.S., portrays the intimate moments
of prominent gures ranging from Don
Lemon to Alison Bechdel.
If youre a poetry fan, New
American Best Friend by Olivia
Gatwood (Button Poetry, March 28), is
a stunning celebration of contemporary

Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties

but two memoirs written by bisexual
writer Roxane Gay. In Hunger: A
Memoir of (My) Body (Harper, June 13),
the much-buzzed-about author explores
her struggles with food, weight and body
image with restorative vulnerability and
honesty. Through her own journey, Gay
provides invaluable lessons on self-care
and self-love.

and Jean Hastings Ardell (University of
Nebraska Press), is the autobiography

Festivals, series and a Beast remake
The biggest and queerest release of the
2017 spring movie season is Disneys live-
action Beauty and the Beast. Based on
the classic 1991 animated movie, this version
uses CGI to bring the enchanted objects to
captivating life. Dan Stevens (Downtown
Abbey) and Emma Watson (all those Harry
Potter movies) play the title couple; Emma
Thompson sings the title song.
Besides a substantial LGBT fanbase,
the new release has a signicant gay
pedigree. The late Howard Ashman
(Little Shop of Horrors) wrote the lyrics
for the songs in the animated movie. (Alan
Menken composed the score and Tim
Rice wrote the additional lyrics.) The lm
is helmed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls
and Gods and Monsters), whos openly
gay as are actors Luke Evans as Gaston
and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth.
No word yet on a D.C. screening, but
The Freedom to Marry, a documentary
from Eddie Rosenstein that features Evan
Wolfson (long-time marriage activist) and
attorney Mary Bonauto is in theaters
now in New York and slated to open
next weekend in Los Angeles. Details at

Also on the marriage front is Love
v. Kentucky, released in February and
streaming now on Amazon, iTunes and
others. Its billed as an intimate account
of how two Kentucky attorneys with no
background in vivil rights navigate their
passionate opponenets and wrangle
their reluctant allies to the U.S. Supreme

The D.C. Shorts Film Festival &
Screenplay Competition (dcshorts.
com) returns in September, but the

This spring, Reel Armations
(reelarmations.org) oers an exciting
slate of lms through XTRA, its monthly
LGBT Film Series. Friday, March 24 oers
the newly released BWOY and the 20th
anniversary screening of Watermelon
Woman. Directed by Sundance
sensation John G. Young and starring
Anthony Rapp, BWOY tells the story of
a man rebuilding his life after the death
of his son. In Watermelon Woman,
writer/director/star Cheryl Dunye creates
a fascinating ctional documentary about
the (nonexistent) history of African-
American women on lm.
On Friday, April 21, XTRA tells the story
of Ugandan transgender activist Cleopatra
Kambugu in The Pearl of Africa. The
First Girl I Loved (Friday, May 12) is a
remarkable lesbian coming-of-age story
that won the Best of Next! Award at the
2016 Sundance Film Festival. And on Friday,
June 16, the screening room turns into a
ballroom for Kiki, the new documentary
described as a sequel to Paris Is Burning
that captures the youth-led expansion of
New York Citys ballroom scene.
In addition, Reel Armations will host
the Reel Trans Film Festival on Saturday,
May 20 at the Studio Theatre. Miss Major
Grin-Gracy will be on hand to discuss a
documentary about her revolutionary life.
Several other regional lm festivals
will also bloom this spring. While they
havent announced their 2017 schedules
as of press time, they have all been

The Annapolis Film Festival runs March
30-April 2 and the Washington Jewish
Film Festival runs from May 17-28.
Filmfest D.C. runs April 20-30 and will
include Play the Devil, a thrilling coming-
of-age story set in Trinidad. Organizers

Legendary lmmaker and Baltimore
native John Waters, recently presented
with the Timeless Star Dorian Award
by the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment
Critics Association, is staying mum about
the lm he will be hosting for the 2017
Maryland Film Festival which runs
in Baltimore May 3-7. He and a slate of
exciting lms will be on hand to welcome
guests to the revitalized SNF Parkway
Film Center (5 W. North Ave., Baltimore).
AFI Silver (a.com/silver) in downtown
Silver Spring, Md., continues to present
the latest indie lms from around the
world, along with curated explorations
of classic lms from Hollywood and
international cinema. A highlight of their
spring schedule is All About Almodvar
which runs March 4-April 27. The tribute
to the legendary queer Spanish director
includes a wide sampling of his lms
from his early anarchic lms released in
the heady days after the fall of Franco
(Labyrinth of Passion) to his delicious
delirious farces (Im So Excited) to his
more recent melodramas (Volver).
A special evening for dedicated
Almodvar fans will be the double bill
of Matador (1986) and Law of Desire

The spring television season has already
gotten o to an inspirational start with
When We Rise an epic miniseries on
ABC about the gay rights movement in the
United States. Over four nights, starting
last Monday and ending tonight (Friday,
March 3), the show tells the interwoven
stories of several prominent LGBT
activists. Written by Oscar-winning writer
Dustin Lance Black (Milk), the show stars
Guy Pearce, Whoopi Goldberg, Rachel
Griths, Mary Louise Parker and Michael
K. Williams. If you missed any of it, check

Although the new CBS legal drama
Doubt was cancelled after two
episodes, it made media history by having
a transgender actor play a transgender
series regular on a broadcast television
show. Actor and activist Laverne Cox
played attorney Cameron Wirth; the
shows publicity describes Wirth as a
transgender Ivy League graduate who
ghts passionately for her clients since

Logos Finding Prince Charming was
renewed for a second season. It should
return in the fall.
After more than a decade o the air,
Will & Grace has been revived for a
10-episode ninth season that will be on
NBC this fall. No premiere date has been
announced yet.
My Sister is So Gay, a new six-
episode series on Tello Films starring Loni
Anderson, debuted in January. Watch it at

Not as gay as youd think

SPRING CLASSICAL SEASON ONLY DOTTED WITH LGBT EVENTS, PERFORMERS

The classical world overall feels just a
tad obtuse in regard to LGBT issues. Its
not so much that being out is any big
deal, for many contemporary composers,
conductors and instrumentalists are, but
far fewer are out in classical music than in
pop culture.
So what youre left with in a big, gay
town like Washington is a spring classical
music scene in which very little by way
of LGBT content or personnel is known.
Its numbers, if not quite its themes, are
probably just as gay as the D.C. theater
scene (maybe not quite, but Id guess
close), yet unless youre in the pits, its a
tough thing to gauge.
Heres what we know:
Queer organist Cameron Carpenter,
an envelope pusher whos both loved
and loathed but is a true virtuoso at
the console, plays the Music Center at
Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Lane, North
Bethesda, Md.) tonight (Friday, March 3)
at 8 p.m. Though hes performed several
times on the Kennedy Centers new
Casavant organ, this will be the rst time
Washington audiences have a chance to
hear his Marshall & Ogletree International
Touring Organ, a sleek, digital instrument
hes been touring the world with the last
few years that packs an impressive sonic
wallop. Pipe organ purists, a notoriously
fussy bunch, will never fully embrace this
concept, but thats OK Carpenter is
still a master technician especially adept
at balancing musical nourishment and
straight-up entertainment. Tickets are

Champion is Terence Blanchards
jazz opera about the real-life story of
Emile Grith, a closeted gay boxer from
the 60s whose story comes to life with
a soulful score, jazz-style singing and
Afro-Caribbean beats with a libretto by
Michael Cristofer. It got strong reviews
when it debuted in 2013 with the New
York Times saying it strikes a resonant
chord. It runs March 4-18 in the Kennedy
Center Opera House (2700 F St., N.W.).

Gay-helmed contemporary opera
outt UrbanArias oers Lucy, a new
work by John Glover and Kelley Rourke
about the true story of Maurice Temerlin
and the chimpanzee he raised from birth,

Its Monday night. Youre tired, youre
cranky and you really need a glass of
wine to go with that roast chicken that
you picked up from the supermarket deli
counter. So you reach for the nearest $10
bottle with a pretty label.
But dont do it.
Theres no judgement weve all picked
up the cheapest bottle before, or the one
that is identied as having a rating of 90
even though we dont really know what
that means. Or, frankly, because theres
an adorable black labrador pictured on
the label who looks kind of like the best
friend waiting patiently at home.
Still, why not make Monday special? In
fact, if youre going to have a glass of wine
when you get home, and if you typically
spend up to $14 for a single glass of wine
when you go out on the weekend, then
it makes sense to spend anywhere from
$15 to $30 on an entire bottle of wine that
will last a few days until that TGIF happy
hour nally beckons again.

You dont have to be a connoisseur to select good wine. Just doing a little basic online research
and knowing your regions is better than picking a bottle at random.
appellation, the bigger the manufacturing
process, Warner says. If the appellation
is just listed as South Australia, then you
know that, geographically speaking, thats
a pretty huge area the grapes could be
harvested hundreds of miles away from
the winery. If the wine is from Sicily, then
you know those grapes are pretty local.
To assess the size of the appellation,
Google is your friend, as are terms like
estate grown and estate bottled, which
typically signify that the farmer is also the
winemaker. European countries tend to
have stricter guidelines in general than
the United States to ensure that local
grapes are being used in wines, although
Oregon, for instance, requires that 100
percent of the grapes used in its wines
are actually grown within the state.
Its not necessarily that the wine will
be higher quality, Warner says,, but its
a more distinctive experience. This is
where youll taste those notes of the pine
trees dotting the local landscape or the
mineral tones of rocky soil, avors that
have infused themselves into the grapes
during the growing process.
In terms of determining which wine to
pick up with your groceries, Warner says
the old adage, If it grows together, it goes
together actually does work. Start with

what youre eating, he says.
If youre making Italian food for dinner,
try a Chianti, while a medium-bodied red
blend is perfect for that supermarket
roast chicken. Spicy Thai take-out? Try a
wine thats lower in alcohol and higher in
sugar, such as an o-dry Riesling.
Focus on the weight of the wine versus
the weight of the food, Warner says.
Fresh vegetables, like in a salad, have
high acid, so they benet from cool-
climate white wines found in northern
Europe, coastal California, Oregon and
Washington state, and Chile.
Some other wine advice to consider:
Ros is exceptionally food-friendly and
works with a wide variety of cuisines.
The color, however, does not denote
sweetness, as most ros wines are dry
these days, according to Warner. A rich
garnet color does not necessarily mean
that the wine will be sweeter than a pale
pink variety.
Champagne is not just for toasting the
new year or sipping before dinner. In fact,
a bright sparkling wine pairs particularly
well with the richness of steak; try a Cava
Reserva from Spain or a French Crmant.
Many consumers are wary of less-
familiar German and Austrian wines, but
Warner recommends trying something

like Grner Veltliner, a highly acidic
and mineral varietal that complements
dark green vegetables, sh and lightly
prepared poultry.
Frances Bordeaux region oers
aordable everyday wines, according to
Warner, but check the alcohol content,
which generally runs from 14-16 percent,
and choose a lower percentage for a
warm, but slightly less intense, avor.
For real value, look to Portugal, which
boasts excellent dry red wines that are
lesser known, making them a good value
for the money. Keep an eye out for wines
from the region around the Douro River,
which is also known for producing sweet
port wines typically enjoyed after dinner.
Above all, dont be afraid to experiment,
and, if you have a partner with very
dierent taste in wine, be prepared to
try something that might not always
be your rst choice. When couples like
completely dierent wines, says Warner,
we dont even try to nd a compromise.
Our advice is to take turns and have an
open mind.

CHICAGO I attended the Chicago Auto
Show media preview on Feb. 9-10 and got
to hear from automobile manufacturers
and sample vehicles ranging from family
haulers to supercars. The nations largest
auto show was in the nations largest
convention center, McCormick Place,
which boasts ve indoor test tracks. The
show ran from Feb. 11-20.
A cool hybrid, a fast and sexy SUV and
an updated favorite were the highlights
of the show.
2017 Chrysler Pacica Hybrid Minivan
Price: $41,995
Mpg: 84 MPGe
0 to 60 mph: Not available
Looking for a mini van for the kids,
dogs, bikes and garden center trips? The
Pacica Hybrid is the worlds only 84-mpg
equivalent mini van; and has a 30-mile
electric-only range, great for running
errands in the neighborhood. This
seven-passenger mini van automatically
switches over to the gas engine when the
battery draws down to a predetermined
level. The combined gas/electric range is
a whopping 530 miles. No range anxiety
here. Technically, Pacica is a plug in
hybrid. The battery pack requires less
than two hours to charge using the
available 240-volt charger. Regenerative
braking extends battery life. The middle
seats do not stow n go because of
the battery pack but the seats are easily

side doors and a built in vacuum system.
Depending on your state, the Pacica Hybrid
may qualify for a tax credit up to $7,500. Is

2017 Maserati Levante

I drove a Maserati Levante in a massive,
empty indoor space at McCormick Place.
I could not put the vehicle through its
paces because I was inside; but I had a
perma grin the entire time I was behind
the wheel. The interior is beautiful to see,
touch and smell. The engine delivers a
deep-throated snarl and wants to be
unleashed to run on the open road.
Levante was created from engines, the
Q4 all-wheel drive system and suspension
components from the Ghibli sedan.
The more powerful Levante S ($83,800)
increases output from the 3.0 liter twin-
turbo engine to 424 horsepower which
is good for 0-60 times of 5.0 seconds. A
ZF eight-speed automatic transmission is
standard on both models.
Maserati is a latecomer to the premium,
high-performance SUV market. Porsche
delivered the rst Cayenne SUVs in 2002.
A nicely optioned Levante S costs nearly
$100,000, which puts it in Cayenne territory,
along with Tesla Model X, BMW X5, Land
Rover Range Rover Sport and Mercedes
Benz GLE. Levante, The Maserati of SUVs,
oers sexy styling and exclusivity that the
more familiar brands do not.

rened 2018 Legacy at the Chicago
Auto Show. A number of styling and
engineering enhancements combine to
improve the driving experience of this
popular mid-sized sedan that goes on
sale this summer.
Two models and four trim levels
are oered. The 2.5i model has a
175-horsepower engine and is available in
Base, Premium, Sport and Limited trims.
The 3.6R model has a more powerful
256-horsepower engine and is only
available in the luxurious Limited trim.

Feud: Bette and Joan premieres
Sunday, March 5 and runs eight
consecutive weeks on FX at 10 p.m.
As Olivia de Havilland (Catherine Zeta
Jones) and Joan Blondell (Kathy Bates)
reveal in delightful cameos that serve as
barely concealed exposition, its a tough
time for aging actresses in Hollywood
in 1961. Marilyn Monroe is in her
ascendancy; studio moguls are scared
of television and desperate for younger
audiences, actresses are considered
over the hill at an age when their male
counterparts are just starting to look
distinguished.
After a series of failed television pilots,

NEW SERIES FEUD DELIGHTS, BUT ONLY TO A POINT

Academy Award-winning actress Joan
Crawford decides to take matters into
her own hands. She sends journeyman
director Robert Aldrich a copy of the just-
released novel Whatever Happened To
Baby Jane?, a horror story about two
reclusive sisters who were both actresses.
Despite years of tension between them,
Crawford asks Bette Davis, also fallen on
hard times in Hollywood, to be her co-
star.
The rest is Hollywood history: verbal
and physical ghts on the set, a battle
over the Academy Award and a grudge
match that lasted until Crawfords death
in 1977. Murphy and his stable of writers
and directors mine this comic material for
all its worth; Murphys Hollywood geekery
is on delicious full display.
The team also captures the dark side of
Tinseltown: the ageism and sexism that
cuts down these two stellar actresses
who are still in their prime and the
ruthless way studio head Jack L. Warner
(Stanley Tucci), feckless director Robert

columnist Hedda Hopper (Judy Davis)
manipulate the pair for their own gain.
They also capture the self-destructive and
self-dramatizing tendencies of the two
fading stars who are desperate to stay in
the public eye and pay the bills.
There is unfortunately a basic problem
with the material. After a while, it starts
wearing thin. Murphy and his team also
seem to miss a lot of opportunities. They
capitalize on the presence of Baby Jane
co-star Victor Buono (Dominic Burgess),
a gay man who idolizes Davis, who bails
him out after he is caught in a police raid
at a gay cruising ground.
But, gossip columnist Louella Parsons
is reduced to a voice on the telephone,
even though her bitter rivalry with Hopper
would seem to oer a handy mirror to the
Crawford-Davis feud. Christina Crawford,
who is trying to launch her own acting
career, also remains unseen.
Nevertheless, the actors have a
wonderful time with the script at hand.

Both Lange and Sarandon are great fun
as Crawford and Davis, chewing scenery
to their hearts content and trying not to
wallow too much during their lingering
dewy-eyed close-ups. And love or hate
Mommie Dearest, its nice to have
another Crawford screen interpretation
of Crawford besides Faye Dunaways.
Tucci and Davis roar through the script
and energize their scenes. Molina is great
as the long-suering director caught
between his producers, his stars and his
own philandering. With her dry delivery
and pitch-perfect physical comedy,
Jackie Homan nearly steals the show as
Mamacita, Crawfords German maid.
Despite this star power, the real nd
of the series is Burgess, whose layered
performance as the quirky and proudly
gay Buono gives the series a grounding
it often lacks. The growing friendship
between Davis and Buono is a highlight
and hopefully Buonos Oscar nomination
for Baby Jane will be mirrored by
Burgess Emmy win for Feud.

Its Thursday night and your phone
pings to tell you that you have a new mes-
sage from your favorite real estate search
engine. Excitedly, you open the link to
find a new condominium has come on
the market and, incredibly, its in a neigh-
borhood you love and a price range your
mortgage lender has said you can afford.
You scroll through the photos, then
contact your real estate agent to see
when you can get in to see it in person.
Your agent looks it up and then promptly
bursts your bubble by telling you that its
not a condominium at all but something
called a cooperative apartment, known
colloquially as a co-op.
Hmmm, you think. It looks like a duck
and it quacks like a duck but its really not
a duck? And what the heck is a coopera-
tive apartment?
Ownership Structure: The main dif-
ference between a condo and a co-op is
the form of ownership. When you buy a
condo, you are purchasing the unit itself
and a share of the common areas that
correspond to the size of your unit di-
vided by the size of the building. You be-
come a unit owner.
When you buy a co-op, you are buying
shares of stock in a corporation that owns

Know the differences between a condo and a
co-op before you start looking.
the building. Your shares correspond to
the size of your apartment (yes, its called
an apartment) divided by the size of the
building. The residents make up the cor-
poration and you become a shareholder.
Financing: Not every lender can fi-
nance a co-op. Traditionally, each co-op
has a few recognition agreements with
mortgage companies certified to lend on
the building. Years ago, it was a small,
select group, but in the past 10 years we
have seen more traditional lenders such
as Bank of America and BB&T authorized
to lend on co-ops.
Be sure to have your agent check with
the co-op board of directors to ensure
you are pre-approved by a lender they
will accept.
Monthly Fees: Monthly fees will gen-
erally be higher in a co-op than a condo.
Heres why: Because the building func-
tions as a single entity, property taxes are
assessed on the whole building and its
land, then each shareholder pays his pro-
rated share as part of the monthly fee.
Utilities may also be common to the
building, so your share of those costs is
usually included in the monthly fee as well.
Some of the same costs you pay for in
a condo fee, such as common area main-
tenance, lawn care and management will
also be included in your co-op fee, but a
large part of the fee could be due to an
underlying mortgage.
An underlying mortgage, if there is one,
uses the entire building as collateral and
you assume your share of the balance for
the remainder of the loan. Such a mort-
gage may reduce the amount of down
payment needed for your purchase.
Document Review: In D.C., whether
you buy a condo or a co-op you can read
the house rules, review the financial sta-
bility of the association and opt out of
your contract if you find anything discon-
certing. Be sure to go over the rules for
pets (some co-ops are cats only), renting
(co-op rules tend to be more stringent)

op buildings are older and the plumbing
will not support individual units, so ex-
pect a community laundry area.
Board Approval: The co-op board of
directors will require a personal inter-
view. The board approval meeting may be
as simple as answering any questions you
may have, but a further review of your fi-
nancial information may also be required.
While federal and D.C. fair housing regu-
lations prohibit discrimination based on
18 protected classes, the inability to pay
ones bills is not among them.
Settlement: You must use a settle-
ment firm that handles co-ops, of which
there are few.
Even though you are buying shares of
stock instead of a home, the District now
treats co-ops like other housing for pur-
poses of transfer and recordation tax, so
your closing costs should be roughly the
same as those of a condo.
So, dont fret if you find that what you
thought was a great condo is really a co-
op. They do have advantages, such as his-
toric or otherwise significant architecture,
traditional yet spacious floor plans and all-
inclusive monthly payments that may ac-
tually be less than similarly priced condos.
Perhaps its time for you to start living
cooperatively.
