FASTING: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday,
those who are 18 but not yet 60 are allowed only one
full meal. Two smaller meals are allowed as needed,
but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT: Those who are 14
years of age or older to abstain from meat on Ash
Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest
in various forms of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Some people suggest that this recovers an ancient tradition
in the church, when in fact the practice belongs to a later
time. The custom of showing the consecrated host to the
people, encased in a vessel called a monstrance, developed
in a period of history when even very pious people
received Communion only rarely. The opportunity to see
the host raised high above the head of the priest at Mass, or
to see the host exposed outside of Mass, was thought by
many to be a form of spiritual Communion. Without
question, our Catholic practice of reserving the consecrated
host both for adoration and Communion of the sick and
dying is a cherished tradition.
Over the next few weeks, well look at how these
traditions developed and how the Church envisions
reservation and adoration today. We do this by the light
of the liturgical reforms that have restored a heightened
appreciation for how receiving the Body and Blood of
Christ is central to our worship. Perpetual Adoration,
Reservation, Benediction, and Reposition are all
part of the Catholic vocabulary. Often the terms are
misused, and a tangled historyas well as widely varying
practices in our parishesadds to the confusion. Many
Catholics today have never participated in Benediction, or
even spent time in adoration on Holy Thursday night.
Theres plenty of interesting history, much of it surprising
and challenging, and we will do our best to inform you
along the way.

STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION
The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes
a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the
desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the
backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts
the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a
garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As
believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our
own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives.
As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation
within each of us to become like Godwe want control,
power, and answers to all of lifes difficult questions. As
communities of faith, we are given this season of
repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on
the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to
one another for strength against temptation.

FASTING BEFORE MASS
Dear Father Gem: I understand that fasting and
abstinence are very common observances during the
season of Lent. My question is about fasting before Mass
not only during Lent but all year round. My family observed
fasting and abstinence one hour before Holy Communion.
Our former pastor, however, had followed the practice of
fasting one hour before Mass. Is there a separate standard
for the priest with regards to fasting and/or abstinence?
What does Canon Law say about fasting in relation to Mass
or Holy Communion?
JP, Parishioner
Dear JP: You mentioned that your family fast one hour before
the actual reception of communion and not before Mass. Well,
your family follows what the Code simply requires. However, if
out of a sense of reverence and devotion a priest or layperson
desires to extend the fast beyond the minimum requirement, no
one should stop him for this indeed is a praiseworthy custom.
While the rules for fasting before Communion have
changed over the centuries, the most recent change was over
50 years ago.
Take note what the current norm says regarding fasting
before communion. The current rules were introduced by Pope
Paul VI on November 21, 1964, and are found in Canon 919 of
the Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1983:
Can. 919 1. A person who is to receive the Most
Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour
before Holy Communion from any food and drink,
except for only water and medicine.2.
A priest who celebrates the Most Holy Eucharist two
or three times on the same day can take something
before the second or third celebration even if there is
less than one hour between them.
3. The elderly, the infirm, and those who care for
them can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they
have eaten something within the preceding hour.
The only distinction, therefore, that the law makes
between priest and layperson is to mitigate the fast for the priest
who has to celebrate multiple Masses.
The rules for fasting before Communion are fairly
straightforward, but there's a surprising amount of confusion
regarding them. One frequent point of confusion concerns when
the clock starts for the Eucharistic fast. The one hour mentioned
in Canon 919 is not one hour before Mass, but, as it says, "one
hour before holy communion." That does not mean, however,
that we should take a stopwatch to church, or try to figure out the
earliest point at which Communion might be distributed at Mass
and time our breakfast to end exactly 60 minutes before that.
Such behavior misses the point of fasting before Communion.
We're meant to use this time to prepare ourselves to receive the
Body and Blood of Christ and to call to mind the great sacrifice
that this sacrament represents.
Notwithstanding, Catholics are dispensed from all of the
rules of fasting before Communion when they are in danger of
death. Since the food must be received by mouth, a sick person
being fed by a tube does not violate the fast. This includes

Catholics who are receiving Communion as part of Last Rites,
with Confession and Anointing of the Sick, and those whose
lives may be in imminent danger, such as soldiers receiving
Communion at Mass before going into battle.
The discipline of fasting before communion has a long
history, as Pope Pius XII states in his 1953 Apostolic
Constitution, "Christus Dominus":
From the very earliest time the custom was observed of
administering the Eucharist to the faithful who were fasting.
Toward the end of the fourth century fasting was prescribed by
many Councils for those who were going to celebrate the
Eucharistic Sacrifice. So it was that the Council of Hippo in the
year 393 issued this decree: 'The Sacrament of the altar shall be
offered only by those who are fasting.' Shortly afterward, in the
year 397, the Third Council of Carthage issued this same
command, using the very same words. At the beginning of the
fifth century this custom can be called quite common and
immemorial. Hence, St. Augustine affirms that the Holy
Eucharist is always received by people who are fasting and
likewise that this custom is observed throughout the entire world.
Doubtless this way of doing things was based upon very
serious reasons, among which there can be mentioned first of all
the one the Apostle of the Gentiles deplores when he is dealing
with the brotherly love-feast of the Christians. Abstinence from
food and drink is in accord with that supreme reverence we owe
to the supreme majesty of Jesus Christ when we are going to
receive Him hidden under the veils of the Eucharist. And
moreover, when we receive His precious Body and Blood before
we take any food, we show clearly that this is the first and loftiest
nourishment by which our soul is fed and its holiness increased.
Hence the same St. Augustine gives this warning: 'It has pleased
the Holy Ghost that, to honor so great a Sacrament, the Lord's
Body should enter the mouth of the Christian before other food.'
Not only does the Eucharistic fast pay due honor to our
Divine Redeemer, it fosters piety also; and hence it can help to
increase in us those most salutary fruits of holiness which Christ,
the Source and Author of all good, wishes us who are enriched
by His Grace to bring forth."
Before the time of Pius XII, the Eucharistic fast was from
midnight onward and included water. This also meant that
Masses were only celebrated in the morning.
In the above-mentioned Constitution, the Pope, while
stressing the importance of the fast, affirmed:
"It should nevertheless be noted that the times in which
we live and their peculiar conditions have brought many
modifications in the habits of society and in the activities of
common life. Out of these there may arise serious difficulties
which could keep men from partaking of the divine mysteries if
the law of the Eucharistic fast is to be observed in the way in
which it had to be observed up to the present time."
Indeed, it's a good thing to choose to extend the
Eucharistic fast if you're able to do so. As Christ Himself said in
John 6:55, "For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink."
For most people, such a fast would not be an overwhelming
burden, and it might draw us closer to Christ in this most holy of
sacraments.
