Materials: True Colors Inventory, True Colors description page and career lists.
Procedure:
Begin by asking students if they have ever taken a personality inventory before in a magazine or
school.
Allow for sharing experiences.
Ask them why we take these personality quizzes (moving them towards the idea of self
discovery).
Explain that they are going to take one today called True Colors. They will learn more about
themselves, which will help them improve relationships with others. This activity will also help
them plan for their future, finding college majors and careers that fit their personalities.
There are 4 True Colors- Gold, Blue, Orange, and Green. We all have colors within us but may let
different ones shine at different points in life.
Pass out inventory and complete step by step reading out loud as a group and touching on new
vocabulary. In each step (working horizontally) students must find the group of words that BEST
describes them and put a 4 on the line. They should then find the one that LEAST describes
them and put a 1. For the remaining two groups they put a 3 for one and 2 for the other.
Continue until all the horizontal steps are complete.
In the final step the students move the numbers that are next to the corresponding letters over the
vertical column and then add them up.
Ask them to circle the color with the most points.
After all have finished take a class tally of how many points relate to each of the four colors (ask
them to think about what you (their counselor) may be as you move through the descriptions).
As a group read through the color descriptions. As you review each color ask if they feel the
descriptions match their personalities.
Then review the True Colors list and ask them to circle three careers in their dominant color area
that interests them.
Process Data: All 6-8th grade students will participate in a 50-minute lesson on finding
their True Colors. Process the learned information from students about what their colors
reflect about them, their values, interests, and possible career aspirations.
Perception Data: Students will recognize, accept, respect and appreciate individual
differences, and develop a better sense of self. Students will begin to develop a personal
vision of their career path and goals based on personal strengths and interests. Students
also learn the importance of communication and people skills in the work force.
Outcome Data:
100% of students will know 3 or more careers.
100% of students will pick at least one career option that they are interested in.
100% of students will pick at least 2 career options that they are interested in.
Follow Up: I would like to follow up with the students in a month and have another
lesson going more in-depth around different careers or jobs students are interested in.
In relation to the needs assessment, I looked closely at questions 12-15 and 17. Questions
12-15 revolve around the college-going culture in STA and lack of transparency for
students in understanding what it takes to get to college. Question #17 focuses
specifically on student exposure to various careers in paths. Through the lesson plan and
inventory we try focusing on student skills and values and how that relates to specific
fields they might be interested in depending on their specific values or skillset.
