Human Body Project Proposal

Description of Model: We will make a model that shows how some of the joints move. Such as
the leg, knee, etc. We will also show how the bone supports the muscles, how the bone makes
blood cell production,and calcium storage.
Drawing: in notebooks
Function your model will perform: the knee bending, leg able to move, how the bob protects
the organs ,and how it stores calcium
Materials needed: wooden board, jello, needle, clear pipes,PVC pipe
Construction plan: We will have the PVC pipes be the bone and have the clear tubing inside
the bone. We will pull the calcium in and out of the bone. This shows how hormones take out
the calcium that is stored inside the bones. The clear tube will have the strings wrapped around
it. To show protection we will have jello as the brain. Two jello one inside a container and one
not we will drop them and show how it protects. A syringe will go inside the brain and release
the hormones.

Calcium release from bone is regulated by parathyroid hormone.

Vitamin D is converted to calcidiol (also called calcifediol) in the l iver, which is then converted to
calcitriol in the kidneys, the biologically active form of v itamin D.

Calcitriol regulates the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the b
healthy skeletal system.

Bone resorption by osteoclasts releases calcium into the bloodstream, which helps regulate
calcium homeostasis

Our bodies absorb calcium from the food we eat through the lining of the bowel. The calcium is
stored in the bones. The body controls the amount of calcium in the bloodstream very carefully.
When blood levels of calcium fall too low, the bones release calcium into the blood. The amount
of calcium absorbed from food in the bowel also increases. And the kidneys get rid of less
calcium through the urine. If blood levels of calcium get too high, the opposite happens.

There are 3 hormones in the body that play an important role in this complicated control system.
These are

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) made by the parathyroid glands

Vitamin D
Calcitonin
These hormones help to keep the correct balance of calcium in the blood.

If this balance is upset, the amount of calcium in our blood can get too high (hyperglycaemia)
and cause serious problems.

If blood calcium gets too high or too low, the muscles and nerves will not function.
In times of need, for example, during pregnancy, calcium can be removed from the
bones. This process is carefully regulated by hormones and is discussed more
completely in the section about hormones.
