Students will be presented with worksheets of different states. Using postcards sent from
various states around the U.S, They will be able to identify the location of the state on the
maps and explain the physical characteristics on them by coloring in the state on the labeled
map and then labeling them on their own in the other Maps in the packet.
Tools:
I will be using different types of maps that the students can look at as a reference and use to
identify various states based on the notecards they are given. They will also be supplied with
crayons or art materials to color in the state on the map.

Learning Cycle: The children learned about maps in 3rd grade and now it is being reviewed
in the beginning of 4th grade. The main focus was on identifying points on a compass rose, the
continents, and oceans as well as locating the communities they are a part of.
Materials:
Part 2: Instruction (Must be scripted. Write what you plan on SAYING to the children.)
Motivation: Hello boys and girls, today, we will be discussing the topic of states. Before
we get into the lesson, I would first like to ask what you know about the states. Very Good
answers everyone, I would now like to show you a short video about the 50 States, pay close
attention because I will be asking some questions later that will relate to this video and, it
might help you during our activity. So that was just a fun little video about all the sates in the
Untied States. So that was just a quick review about the names and locations of the different
states. Can anyone tell me what state we currently are in? Pennsylvania, very good.
Demonstrating/Modeling:
Guided Practice: Each of you has a small packet in front of you, Please find the one
labeled United States Map. I have assigned each of you a state and a post card to go along with
the state chosen. Before I do that, Lets go over a few together so you have an idea of what I
would like for you to do. What I would like for you to do is to locate the state using your map.
Once you see it color it in, you will show me so I can check to make sure you are correct, then
when I have checked it off, turn the page over to the next pages titled Major Rivers and Lakes
and try the same state on your own without looking, color in our state and also circle the closest
rivers and lakes that run through your state. If there is time left, we will continue onto the
next page and find Mountain and Deserts located near your state if any. again, color in your

state and circle the mountains or deserts your state is in. Finally, We will locate the time zone
your state is in if we have time. We will all share our state and some information about it. You
will have the chance to stand up where your sitting and answer the three questions I have
written on the b oard. I will write down a few of the states on the board and later in March, we
will make a booklet with fun facts for each state.
Lets take a look at our state of Pennsylvania as an example. Lets color in the state of
Pennsylvania. Very good, put your packet in the air so I can see your sheet once your finished
coloring in the state. Excellent. Now who knows the abbreviation which is much like the
shortened form of a word. Lets flip over to the Major Rivers and Lakes page, can someone come
up and show me where Pennsylvania is without the titled labeled on the map? Awesome, now
what river seems to enter Pennsylvania? Ohio River good job!!! again, color in the state and put
your packets I the air when your done so I can see. Now please flip over to the Mountain Ranges
and Deserts page, I would like someone to come up to the board and coloring the state of PA,
Label it with the abbreviation. Correct, very good. Now what can someone tell me about the
state of PA? What is this shaded area covering the state? A mountain right, and does someone
want to take a shot at pronouncing the name of the mountain? Appalachian, good.
Independent Practice: Lets take a look at our state of Pennsylvania as an example. Lets
color in the state of Pennsylvania. Very good, put your packet in the air so I can see your sheet
once your finished coloring in the state. Excellent. Now who knows the abbreviation which is
much like the shortened form of a word. Lets flip over to the Major Rivers and Lakes page, can
someone come up and show me where Pennsylvania is without the titled labeled on the map?

Thats all I would like for you to do for now. I will place a postcard on your desk. What I would
like for you to do is do exactly what we just did and I would like for you to help each other in
your groups. Maybe one does one map each while others write down three facts about the state
based on the postcards and share with the others to fill in the missing areas.
Closure: So we had some time to work in groups, does anyone want to share their state
and tell me a little about what they found out about their chosen state based on the three
questions on the board?
Part 3: Reflection
Choose 3 children, one struggling, one basic/average, one advanced. Include their work
and for each one explain how/why you rated him/her the way you did from observing him/her in
the lesson. Include how you will use data driven information for each of the three children in
your future lessons (not how you would reteach this lesson).
