Biography Group Research

Common Core Standard:


CC.1.2.4.A Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key
details; summarize the text.
CC.1.2.4.C Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a text, including what
happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
CC.1.4.4.D Group related information in paragraphs and sections, linking ideas within
categories of information using words and phrases; provide a concluding statement or
section; include formatting when useful to aiding comprehension.

Objective:
Students will research, record and present information about a famous African American
individual.
Materials:
o Biography Articles
o Associated biography pages
Timeline
Brainstorm Bubble
All about.
Motivation:
We will begin by watching a video about what Black History Month is, and why it is
celebrated by people.
Instruction:
I will assign a specific person to each of the four groups of students
Students will be given a copy of an article and packet to record information from the
article
We will review how to research/highlight information based on the four teacher-directed
lessons on
o Frederick Douglass
o Jesse Owens
o Billie Holiday
o Sarah E. Goode
Independent Practice:
o Students will read the article as a group
o Students will each take turns reading a paragraph
o Students will stop to highlight information they feel will help them answer the questions
related to the article such as
o Birth
o Death
o Age
o Ethnicity
o Accomplishments
o What makes them important?
Students will complete each page including
o Timeline
o Bubble Brainstorm
o All about.
Students will present the information to the rest of the class
Students not researching the other groups biographies will fill in the information as the
students present.
Each student will have a role in presenting including
o One student will give a summary of their person
o One student will present the timeline
o One student will present the brainstorm bubble
o One student will present the Just the Facts portion of the about me.
o One student (If five in a group) will present the interesting/important facts
o One student will present the Contributions or Achievements
o If there are only four in a group, the fourth person will present the complete All
About.page.
The teacher will also be filling out the pages presented in order to use for assessment later
in the lesson.
Closure:
We will watch a video related to the person presented during the class time.
Assessment:
Students will be asked questions by the presenting group about the person they chose.
They will have the opportunity to ask five questions related to their person.
Modifications:
One student will be wearing an FM system
I will be wearing a lapel microphone
Repeating directions for student who have troubling processing information
Chunking tasks into smaller parts.
Check for understanding of directions.
Preferential Seating
Frequent feedback and praise
Extra time to complete classwork for a few group of students
