Was Brutus a Patriot or a Betrayer?

REVISED ESSAY
Word count: 1200

Julius Caesar by William ShakeSpeare is one of his best tragic stories where the
Emperor is brutally murdered after there are a series of lies and misunderstandings
between the conspiracies. Brutus, who is a powerful public figure proves to be one of the
most complex character, whose role turns him into a tragic hero. However, it can be
questioned if Brutus was a patriot whose loyalty lied in Rome or a betrayer, whose
selfishness subjugated his mind. Brutus was indeed searching for the best of Rome, and
the killing of Julius Caesar to him at time was stopping Rome to be dictated by a
demagogue, who he believed would cause the fall of Rome. In addition, he viewed his
long friend J.C as too ambitious for his own good. Nevertheless, J.C was his close
friend, and as he participated with people whose aims were not in directly due to the best
of Rome, he was forced into doing what he had first perceived as protecting Rome. But
along this, he transforms into a disgusting betrayer against the man who granting him
power.

After there the assassination, Brutus and Antony give a speech. Through their
speech, it is revealed that Brutus is a betrayer and Antony is a patriot. Brutuss speech,
superficially might seem to respect the values of Rome, nevertheless, they are only to
preserve his status and respect for society. His illogic mind still pervades his mind, and he
feels delighted by the assassination. Antony, however empathizes with the truth, and the
peoples heart by giving a candid, and emotional speech. He tells the people that if they
desire to avenge Caesars assassination, then be prepared [to shed] your tears now.

In addition, Brutus tends to claim he is not responsible for the murder. This points
out his guilty mind, and that he is liar, as he was amongst the conspirators. Brutus
committed a felony by contributing in the assassination of his own emperor.
However, it can be argued that Brutus only desires to the well for Rome, and
perceived the killing of Caesar as a necessary evil. He believed that Caesar's plans would
bring the fall of Rome, and the only way to stop it was by killing him; totally getting rid
of him. Also, it is worth mentioning Brutus somewhere in the root of his soul was a
Roman patriot as he participated in the battle of Philippi, where he fought till his defeat.

At the denouement of the play, Brutus admits that he slew the best lover of the
Romans, Caesar. Nevertheless, what made Brutus think he was protecting Rome by
murdering Caesar? Brutus is a character who is greatly loyal to Rome and he does
anything to preserve Romes strength. When Brutus learns the assassination plans of
Caesar, he plays a significant role by being the individual who stabs him in the back,
disregarding his friendship. However, it is important to remember that Brutus was not
aware of Cassiuss master plan of using Brutus for the dirty assassination of Caesar.
Brutus indeed does play a major role in the assassination of Caesar, yet he is unaware the
lies Cassius is telling him. For example, he tells him he has uncovered letters that show
the Romans are unhappy with Caesar.

When Caesar realizes Brutus has committed his murder, he says and you too
Brutus? Then fall Caesar. Brutus claims, if then that friend demanded why Brutus rose
against Caesar, (his answer would be); not that I loved Caesar less, but I loved Rome
more. Caesar believed in Brutus till his death and seemingly forced himself to believe
that he was the wrongdoer.

Alongside with that, Brutus may not intent to betray Caesar, his actions provided
him to be unwise and untrustworthy. There was no solid evidence that Caesar was
committing crimes and that he wanted to take over Roman as dictator. Infact, even if that
were the case, the Roman crowds would have celebrated the death of Caesar.

It must be by his death; and for my part, I know no personal cause to spurn at
him. But for the general. He would be crown'd, how that might change his nature, there's
the question. Brutus wanted power, and some argue he could have been actually jealous
of Caesar and demanded someone else in power. As mentioned before, there was no real
reason that justified his death, and even the Roman people recognized this when Anthony
took control.

In the world of the play, Caesar did start slight conflicts in Rome such as starting
war with another tribe, however, his crimes, if any, did not justify the the brutal, public
murder of J.C. Subsequently, Brutus was forced to become an anguished, regretful
individual, and no longer held the same patriotic values. He lied several times and did not
admit he killed Caesar. If Brutus was gullible enough to assassinate his own friend, this
means he would cause greater harm in the future without thinking about its consequences,
or even a proper purpose.

Brutus, despite his prominent role in Rome proved to be a thoughtless character

because he did not have the capacity of understanding the outcomes of the murder in
public. He strongly opposes the action of murdering Anthony along with the
assassination of Caesar because he does not want unnecessary blood. Nevertheless,
Antony was incredibly loyal to Caesar, and it was bound he would avenge Caesar's cold
blood. In the world of the play, characters are slaved to selfish ambitions that control the
characters choices. Later, he is regarded asthe noblest of Romans.

In conclusion, Brutuss concrete idealism provided to be both, his virtue and his
thoughtless wild flaws. Brutuss commitment and supreme loyalty with the principles of
his mind character that allied for the best of Rome forced him to make miscalculations;
transforming him from a trusted character to a violent killer. However, this miscalculation
was limited as he does not want Antony murdered. In another instance, he allows Antony
to speak when Cassius advices him not to allow him. Thus, Brutus not only endangers
relations with Cassius, but loses the Roman publics support. In all Acts of Julius Caesar,
Brutus behaves and acts in a manner that restricts the self severing part of his actions

Reflection

Its very unfortunate that I happened to unintentionally plagiarize in this assessment.

Everything I wrote is straight out of my mind, and yes, I was looking at sparknotes awhile back,
and happened to write similarly. I can reassure you this would happen again. I think there is was
a massive improvement after I had a fair long discussion with my elder brother about Julius
Caesar; luckily he had read it before for drama. That is what helped me talk about idealism and
other aspects in Brutuss character. The conclusion, I thought I should re-write because the
previous conclusion paragraph was more like another body paragraph and introduced new
information. I think this is a very better final draft with improved grammar, punctuation and
revisions are effective.

Thank you for marking this :)
