Load list
Common DC Appliances in dc power homes
(In rural area):

dc LED lamps (2,5,and 7 watts)

dc mobile charging
Dc ceiling fans (9 watts)
Radio (10 watts) etc.
Average total power = 60 watts per home
Size of service lines (from the bus bar to home)
Low voltage power system often operates at rather high
current levels. If the interconnecting cables are too
small, large proportion of the power available will be
wasted in the cables itself. This loss can be reduced by
using a larger cable, but this increase costs. The
acceptable maximum voltage drop for DC loads is 3-5% of
nominal battery voltage drop.
Calculate the voltage drop index
VDI = (A* L)/(%VD * V)

Where VDI = voltage drop index

A = load current
L = the length of the cables
%VD = acceptable voltage drop
V = System voltage

Average wattage per home =60 watts

System voltage = 12v

Average cable length = 60m

Voltage drop = 4%

Load current I = W/V

= 60/12=5A

VDI = (A* L)/ (%VD x V)

= (5A*60m)/ (4*12)
=6.75
Cross-sectional area for aluminum wire = (VDI x 1.7 = mm2) =
1.7*6.75 = 11.75mm2

Available Sizes: 1 1.5 2.5 4 6 10 16 25 35 50 70 95 120 mm2

For aluminum wire, the nearest VDI = 11.75mm2 is 6mm2
