Why should you take Business Education Classes?

Many peopleparents, students, and even educatorsoperate under

the erroneous assumption that business education is only for students
who expect to graduate and pursue a career in business. The
information contained within the business education curriculum is not
only valuable for all students in today's world, but also is critical for
the success of our country. All students need to have a general
understanding of how the American economy operates and the role
business plays in the economic well being of this country. Not to
mention, the absolute necessity for students to be able to understand
and utilize technology in their personal and professional lives.

Recent studies show that 70% of secondary students want to start their
own businesses; yet, only about 15% feel that they have the skills and
knowledge to do so. Also, it is a well-publicized fact that today's
graduates will change CAREERS (not jobs, in the sense of moving to a
higher-level position or moving across town to do the same job) at
least seven times in their professional job years. This means students
need to have the knowledge and skills it takes to become a lifelong
learner and to harness the momentum of the business world to their
advantage!

BUSINESS EDUCATION DOES ALL THIS

AND MORE!

What ALL students should know about Business...

Students who elect to study business may do so for a variety of

reasons. They may be interested in business education because they
want to learn about investments, develop computer skills, or
understand how economic principles apply to life. They may study
business because they intend to go to work immediately after
graduation from high school or a community college. Some study
business to learn the basics of entrepreneurship so they can start they
own business. Still others may have decided that pursuing a college
degree in business is their goal so they study business education to
prepare for higher education.
The National Business Education Association and members of the
business education community recommend that at the completion of
secondary school, students should be able to:

Function as economically literate citizens through the

development of personal consumer economic skills, a
knowledge of social and government responsibility, and an
understanding of business operations.

Demonstrate interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills

necessary to function in multicultural business settings.

of business and the impact of one component on another.

both the domestic and international arenas.

whether they be in the labor market or in the consumer goods
market.

to make wise management decisions.

Business and related subjects (such as the FAME group finance, accounting, management
and economics) are among the most popular fields of study at universities worldwide,
particularly at graduate level. You might have some vague ideas about why this is the case
business graduates are in high demand worldwide, business touches on pretty much every
aspect of modern human society, careers with a business degree are diverse and often highly
paid and these assumptions are likely to be largely true

But if youre still not quite convinced, heres a deeper exploration of the question, Why

degrees to choose from, offering different specializations and benefits, and applicable
to people at different stages of development and with very different career goals.

academic and others primarily focused on practical professional development. You can
categorize types of business degrees by level (ie. undergraduate, graduate,

Business degree salary expectations

As already mentioned, earnings potential is at the heart of many business students
motivation. While you shouldnt expect a huge business degree salary as soon as
you graduate, the skills and knowledge gained from a business degree should facilitate
your career progression, making it easier to climb into management-level positions with
higher salaries.
The message really is: the business degree itself does not automatically mean a high
salary though graduating from a highly reputed business school with strong grades is
certainly likely to open up some interesting opportunities and perhaps a large business
degree salary. Youll still need to prove yourself, and be ready to work hard, if you want
to reach your career and salary goals and be prepared for plenty of competition.

In the US 2013-14 PayScale College Salary Report, the average starting business
degree salary was reported at US$43,500, with the average mid-career salary at
US$71,000. The figures vary depending on the specialization: international business
graduates are projected to start on US$43,800 rising to $US83,700 by mid-career; for
finance the figures are $49,200 and $87,100; accounting $45,300 and $74,900; human
resources $38,000 and $63,900; organizational management $41,900 and $60,300;
marketing management $42,100 and $80,200.
For those studying at the masters level, business degree salary expectations are likely
to be higher. According to the latest TopMBA.com Jobs & Salary Trends Report,
salaries for MBA graduates average almost US$109,200 in the US and Canada. In
Western Europe the average earnings for those with an MBA are a little lower overall
but this varies depending on the country, while expectations in Australia are around
US$117,800.
If a top salary is important to you, it may be worth while researching the latest salary
trends and forecasts for different business specializations, as well as looking into the
world regions reporting highest demand for business graduates.
Transferable skills gained from a
business degree
During your business degree youll develop a broad knowledge of business operations
as well as gaining targeted skills in your specific field, such as customers, markets,
finance, operations, strategy, business policy, communications and IT. Youll typically
also be challenged to explore these fields within an international context, though in
some cases it will be advantageous to specialize in their application within a particular
country or world region.

You can also expect to gain many valuable transferable skills, which can be put to use
in both everyday life or if you decide to take a completely different career path. The
skills gained from a business degree are likely to include:

An understanding of how organizations operate

Strong communication skills (oral and written)
Analytical and critical thinking
Problem solving
Decision making
Logical thinking
Presentation and report writing skills
Numeracy and an understanding of how to interpret and use
financial data
Self-motivation, initiative and effective time management

7 Reasons Why You Should Start a Business Career

When choosing a career path, you should carefully consider all aspects of what that
career can offer you over the coarse of a lifetime. Keep in mind as you do so that
what may appeal to you now may not appeal to you as much a decade or more
from now. If you have not yet considered pursuing business studies, here are seven
good reasons for starting a business career that you may not have considered
before.

1. It Is a Practical Choice

Business majors have more job security than other majors because they are
needed in virtually all industries. Whether its Disney, Microsoft, or a large
meat packing plant, all industries need people with business acumen to
function and prosper. This will always keep the demand for business majors
relatively high, even in poor economic times.

2. You Are Not Tied To One Specific Region Of the World

A business career will give you more flexibility in what geographic location(s)
you choose. This is particularly important if you have a spouse who may end
up with only one or a few options for their job location.

3. The Opportunity For Specialization Is High

If you enter into a business studies program , you will have plenty of
opportunity to specialize. For example, you could specialize in management,
marketing, human resources, accounting, or business finance. You could also
choose to specialize in a specific industry such as the fashion industry or in
the humanitarian non-profit sector.

4. It Is Easier To Switch To a Different Job Mid-Career

To keep things interesting, many people find that at some point in their
career, they yearn for a complete change. If you have a business career, this
is much easier to do than with many other professional careers such as
nursing, engineering, and radiology. This is because business skills transfer
more easily between industries than the professional skills you would acquire
in other professions.

5. Business Careers Offer More Opportunities For Advancement

In general, business careers offer more opportunity for career advancement

than other careers. With advancement comes salary increases, professional
respect, an opportunity to challenge yourself, and many other perks as well.

6. You May Have the Opportunity To Retire Relatively Young

It is not uncommon for businesspersons to retire in their fifties or even late

forties. This is because people in business tend to have excellent salaries
that allow for putting away a good nest egg. They also tend to have
excellent benefit packages and other business perks that make saving
money and retiring early much easier.

7. Business Studies Makes It Easier To Start Your Own Business

Many talented people who start their own business fail simply because they
do not know enough about the business side of their industry. For example,
an interior designer may be extraordinarily talented in design but may not
fully understand the most basic principles of accounting, marketing, and
managing employees. This is why it may be a good idea to combine business
studies with another major.

If you are still uncertain about whether or not business studies would suit
you best, consider talking with a career counsellor. Here at BROWNS
Professional he are happy to provide all the information and the support you
might need. Alternately, recently retired individuals can be an excellent
resource on helping you make career decisions. Good luck in whatever you
decide!
